Telstra Mobile Deal - Family/Friends $39 Monthly Cap Plan, Nokia E71, IPhone 3GS + others, Min Spend $10/mth

351
TFFOFFER

$39 month gets you $400 of calls, a handset (Nokia E71 $5mth,Iphone 3GS $20,HTC Touch HD $15, see here (worth $~389) and there is a minimum $10/month. So ideally the minimum cost of this contract with an E71 is $360 if you don't make many calls. If you don't choose a handset there is no contract (month to month).

So minimum as I understand would be:
(5 x 24) + (10 x 24)= $360 for the Nokia E71
(20 x 24) + (10 x 24) = $720 for Iphone 3GS

This offer is available to friends and families of Telstra employees BUT… in the terms and conditions it states:

There is no requirement for these customers to link the service to a staff member’s account and there is no requirement for staff member validation during the connection process. Once connected, customers need to include the referring staff ID on the voucher and send it to Telstra.

Users on Whirlpool have suggested you could make the delta number/employee number up, make friends with someone in a Telstra shop, or call up customer service and ask them for their Delta number.

Cap includes sms (national only), data and most calls (not international and premium numbers). Possibly a good way to get an Iphone cheaper:

Yes – this is a damn good deal because effectively you can get an iphone 3GS 16GB for $720. $840 total MRO, less $360 MRO credit ($15 x 24 months), plus $10 per month minimum spend = $720. Brilliant deal.

Read the thread on Whirlpool.

  • any delta number beginning with a 2 or 3, 6 digits will probably work, ie d200000

  • There is a $5 phone repayment with the e71

    • Doesn't the plan come with $15 per month towards MRO, which would pretty much cover the price of the E71 over 24 months?

  • What happens if the employee you use leaves Telstra. Doesn't the MRO become payable, thus dramatically increasing the cost?

Users on Whirlpool have suggested you could make the delta number/employee number up, or call up customer service and ask them for their Delta number.

    That would be fraud.

Great deal if you can do it legit. May as well just walk into a shop and steal a few phones if not.

    • I'm uncomfortable with it too. But considering the purportedly exclusive "family and friends" deals we've become accustomed to, and the ease of claiming educational or affiliate discounts (e.g. with Dell or Lenovo) which often apparently have tacit approval given the lack of basic verification, it seems the lines are getting a bit blurred.

  • I was going to post this, but then i realised that i'd probably get neg votes because you need to get a telstra employee number

  • any other mobiles available with this offer?

  • how do you find out which phones you can get and at what price?
how do u find out what the phone's MRO is? had a look at the iphone and it seem to have a higher MRO then $840.?

  • Hey neil, could you explain how to got $720 for the iphone?

      • I've had 2 coffee's and still can't see this link. Could you please paste the direct link Pete? Also what are the call rates for this cap?

        • and go here for T&C's which show costs in pdf (near top of page)

          https://telstra.custhelp.com/app/friends_and_family_offer

quick points is 30c per 30 secs (60c per minute) with 27c flagfall - sorta in ball park of other capped plans.

But data is extra if you look at sign on options for data further down linked page. (if you dont take the option the casual rates are high $2mb)

        • Thanks Turd and Pete.

Turd, I know you've heard it before but that avatar confused the hell out of me for a minute there lol.

    • Effectively you get $360 off the total MRO price, with the remainder of the MRO spread across the 24 months.

So in the example of the iphone being $840
      It would be $840 - $360 = $480
      $480 / 24 = $20 per month on top of your plan
      Total cost is $39 + $20 = $59 per month

      FYI :

The Nokia 6720, E51, E52 & E71 all have a MRO of $480 meaning it is an additional $5 per month over 24 months.

        *If you spend >$39 and more than$400 of calls,smss etc. otherwise I'm lead to believe it's $10 + $20 = $30 month.

        • Agreed.

  • +1

I think making up the staff number would be fraught with danger - also Telstra is quite likely to contact the staff member (more so if they find the number doesn't exist - or is expired) to confirm "friends" and the they have you with phone and plan, and just up your rates to the "normal" plan. And this is CLEARLY covered in the T&C's

So fudge it and you'll have to pay Full price is that what you want??

Deal is good if you have some Telstra "friend" who is willing to let you use their number, so it will then be quite legitimate, otherwise I'd stay clear as you are signing a contract, they know where to find you

BTW if this is on whirlpool and here the likelyhood of checks being made are great as they will probably get a flood of apps

  • Can I use the $400 credit for international calls?

    • read the T&C's as shown in link above, its easy to do. BTW NO they are not in the cap.

  • The E71 is not free mate its $5 a month

    • Apologies, you are correct.

      So minimum as I understand would be (5 x 24) + (10 x 24)= $360 for the E71
      (20 x 24) + (10 x 24) = $720 for Iphone 3GS

      Does that sound right?

  • i don't quite get how this works - i've never seen a $39 CAP with min. $10 spend :s i thought u always paid whatever your cap was (like with 3)

so if i was going to pay $20/month, how much credit do i get? $200 instead of $400?

    • $10 is the minimum spend, even if you spend even if you use less then that.
After that you will be charged for usage between $10 - $39.
Once you go over $39 you have up to $400 credit.

If you only use $20 worth, that is all you pay for.

    • It's like the old 3 caps, which they got rid off where there is a minimum spend.

      My plan on 3 $29 cap, $20 minimum spend, $150 cap. If I use $0, I pay $20. If I use $10, I pay $20. If I use $21, I pay $21. If I use $37, I pay $29. If I spend, $151, I pay $30.

So this would work the same way. If you spent $20, you would pay $20. If you spend less than $10, you pay $10. If you spend $67, you pay $39. etc.

      • so you're saying once u start using the plan, u start building a debt (as per their rates) and pay exactly whatever you use before your debt reaches $39. but once you've used $39 worth of credit, then u suddenly get an extra ($400-$39) $361 worth of credit for free?!

if i'm right, then this sux for those that can only afford to be on $20-$30 caps eh?

  • All phones are locked to Telstra?

    If so this kinda sucks

    • I don't think they are - most 24 month contracted phones are unlocked.

  • It's telstra!! It's a rip off. I've sell many phones and telstra's always have the worse deals. No offence here but maybe it's just me against telstra.

    • +1

No offence taken, it's just you against telstra.

Telstra prices might be high, but when you want reliability and coverage, they are the best. As they say, you get what you pay for.

I move around between CBD's and the country a lot, Telstra is my number one choice of provider.

      • i'd have to agree with tycoon123 though… i personally dont like telstra all that much either… prices are really high for what you get and yeah you definetly will get better reception with telstra at the moment but optus and others arent all that far behind now…

that said this is one of the better if not the best telstra deals around at the moment… as long as you can get your hands on a family/friends delta number that is…

  • Guys I received this offer through a friend at Telstra. In his email it states
"To be provided this offer please have them quote my employee number is xxxxxxx (please treat this with care eg don’t leave documents lying around with it on). If my employee number is not quoted they will not have the plan applied."
Making it up will be no good as they have to confirm and it will be audited, their delta number doesn't start with a "d" either as mentioned above.

  • What about Data? Why is no body asking about included Data?

    • It includes national calls, data, SMS, and MMS.

BTW I should mention that I work for Telstra.

      • +2

$2 per mb is robbery BTW

  • Just to confirm - the cap includes data but without an extra payment for a browsing pack, you pay $2/MB?!

So without anything else (calls, SMS, etc), that's a max of 200 MB data in a month to stay under the $39 cap. Not that great if you use the data a lot for apps, emails, etc.

Probably standard for Telstra anyway but something to keep in mind.

Negative vote because I do not feel the OP should even be referring to the WP suggestion that you could make up the employee number. Also the OP uses the word "states" when no where in the terms here http://www.telstra.com.au/latest_offers/familyandfriendsoffe…
    or here in the terms.pdf
    http://www.telstra.com.au/latest_offers/familyandfriendsoffe…
do I find the following statement:

There is no requirement for these customers to link the service to a staff member’s account and there is no requirement for staff member validation during the connection process. Once connected, customers need to include the referring staff ID on the voucher and send it to Telstra.

This therefore appears to be a quote from someone else or a post in WP maybe, not a quote from the T&Cs as it is made out to be.

I have more to say but that should be enough of a reason for me to vote negative right. (I haven't had my lunch break here at work yet)

Mods - If the suggestion that you could possibly make up an employee number is removed from the OP, then feel free to revoke my negative vote.

    Cheers,jbk.

    • +2

Although the above statement is not detailed in the terms and conditions, is is correct, as the process is to get connected then send in the voucher to verify eligibility.

If anyone here actually takes up the offer, contact me afterwards and I'll be happy to give you the voucher & necessary employee ID.

      • Hi h4lcyon, how do we contact you for the voucher/employee ID? Thanks.

      • I don't work for Telstra, but from what I have heard from someone who does work there, Telstra staff are only allowed to pass this on to 10 people (family/friends).

        • jbk - your negative vote is a valid vote - and it is noted that it can be revoked under certain conditions by a mod. Well put and a mature attitude which is commendable.

          • @[Deactivated]: Agreed. I enjoyed the neg ;)

            • @neil: I guess in marketing speak any publicity is good (in this case for Telstra). It's just that I don't feel Ozbargain should be seeming to encourage this sort of situation which makes it out to be alright, that there is nothing wrong with making up a "delta" or employee ID number, which may possibly have negative consequences depending on how far the application gets and whether Telstra is happy to accept dodgy numbers or 100's of applications to the same employee ID number.

              • @Ultraman: Agree but as I pointed out above a dodgy number will likely backfire, so while people are free to make comments taking up these is a risky option. And we have both done our bit to point this out. So thats all we can do. The OP doesnt openly encourage this option. Says others have said this. Fine line. Probably not needed. But will leave the OP to delete. As Telstra does have its internal mechanisms and power through to contract to negate any action its not prepared to accept. Like being told you can speed thru a camera site but your license plate is still visible - might work, but if it doesn't!!

  • +1

I walked into Telstra Shop RouseHill, and they had pre filled vouchers with there staff members ID. I'd be more than happy too upload one but it seems the shops are actively selling this too the public even JB HiFI had a copy which i imagine someone from Telstra Shop gave them

    • Wow! Can't believe they're willing to hand out staff member ID's that easily - surely they could be used for other things as well?!?!?

  • Great deal did anyone notice that it is for new customers only. Not for existing or recontracting customers.
has anyone out there been successful in getting this great deal?

    • That's strange because this is one of the questions for the online order:

Is this purchase a new mobile service or an upgrade to an existing Telstra or non Telstra mobile number?*

      o New Service
o Upgrade an existing Telstra mobile service
o Transfer an existing non Telstra mobile number

  • I cant find where I read that it wasnt for exisiting customers. It was in a T&C document I will keep searching.

  • Its on the link down the bottom lol

Yes I have succesfully done this at Rouse Hill they are selling it to the public so issues they have photocopied pre fileld forms that you mail off

    • +1

Cool, Ben, don't suppose you could upload a copy?

      • +1 for this idea.

The guys in the Telstra shop obviously don't mind giving these forms out - and it might mean I don't have to give out my details :)

    • Thanks Ben for showing me where it said Not for new customers. This is in conflict with the order form on web.
Does anyone have any ideas of how we can solve this question?

      • I have "worked" this out.

The original is for Telstra Staff or friends of Telstra - eg those working fora reseller,

They have extended the offer to friends of employees

This imposes different conditions and these overide the original conditions. This is where the new customers only condition applies.

        From the brochure

"2 If the Staff Mobile Cap Plan & Friends of Telstra Cap Plan Terms and
Conditions are inconsistent with these Terms and Conditions, then these
Terms and Conditions apply to the extent of the inconsistency."

And this condition is stated in this brochure

"5 This offer is only available for new mobile customers. Recontracting and
existing customers are not eligible for the offer."

So Friends of Telstra and staff can upgrade, as per the original conditions.
Friends of staff and friends of Friends of Telstra can only be new customers

Where do you want me to send my "legal" advice bill??

  • so how about the touch HD2? how much would that be?
    http://www.telstra.com.au/shop/Consumer/NGTSOMobilePhonesVie…

  • Can anyone explain to a maths noob how much i would have to pay per month to get the (Apple) Iphone and the (Telstra) $39 of Cap?

[After all discounts been have applied]

    Cheers.

    • Read my first post, the example I have given is for an iphone 3gs 16gb.

  • Yeah 59/month for an iphone is alright.

But still about double expensive for 'normal' phone for comparisons of credit include.

I love Iphone though so probably buy!

  • Plenty of these types of deals around, like no monthly plan and no flag call( Just pay for call). If your lucky to have family members who work for, or there company has deals with 1 of the big players.

  • I am thinking seriously about taking up this offer, can anyone tell me with the Iphone is their going to be much difference with the 16gs to the new one that is going to be released in June…?

  • Has anyone ordered one of the phones using the online system? I currently have my mobile phone number with Telstra and dont want to go through the hassle of porting the number out to another telco. the T&Cs say it is for new customers only but via the online system gives the option of new or exisiting customer.

    • I would just fill it out and see what happens, considering the worst outcome is that your order will be rejected, I think there is little risk.

      • Don't think so see my advice a few posts above

        • Yes, you are correct.

I believe they have copied the web-form that is normally used for taking up the staff offer, and have forgotten to remove the upgrade option which does not apply to the friends and family offer.

  • I am an existing customer and I thought I might apply for this and just see what happens, at the end of the day they will get more money out of me, so I dont believe they want to knock back money…

  • Finally signed up - it was a relatively painless process except the staff at the Chatswood T Life store wasn't too interested to talk to me initially. I am amazed that they don't do any sort of credit checks these days and the speed of porting the number across from 3.

Sigh only if I knew the iPhone 32Gb cost slightly more than the 16Gb!

  • How much more?? mini2

    • $30 up front and $5 extra per month on top of the 16Gb. $150 more for the duration of the contract.

  • Just signed up for two accounts and get two HD2 for $10/month for 24 months each. Great bargain and the network signal is the best. I am glad to get out of Vodafone.

    • hey, you are paying $10 per month for each HD2 phone, right?

  • got problem to sign this offer online. nothing happens when I press submit button. could anyone help me out?

  • Went to check at the T-life shop and you can get that deal there. However, the iphone is only unlocked for a $150 fee. All other phones are unlocked free of charge. OFfer expires tomorrow.

  • Thanks to the OP for this deal, I managed to take advantage of this offer pick up my IPhone 3gs 32gb on thursday due to telstra system playing up…

  • This deal is back on till the 29th of June, if there is anyone else wanting to take up the offer.
