Damn wasn't expecting a 480gb to get this low for a while with the AUD so shit

    • +3

Sorry, negged you by mistake. Can mods please correct?

There's a reason why this drive is so cheap though compared to other SSDs

          Thanks! Learnt something new!

    • its about $30-35 cheaper then the cheapest staticice price

Trion 100 is one of the worst performing SSDs on the market.

    From Anandtech back in July:

the Trion is the slowest modern TLC drive we've tested and in some cases it is so by a quite hefty margin.

    and for laptop users

The poor performance also translates to power inefficiency. Because the drive spends more time processing each IO, it will end up idling less than a faster drive would and as we saw in the trace-based tests that results in higher total power consumed than any other drive we have tested.

This is the general opinion in every review. It's still an SSD but it's the very low end of modern SSDs.

    Dat price tho.

    • +1

Might be good for a second ssd applications or games I guess.

    • +12

If you are replacing a HDD it is still greased lightning in comparison, boot may take a second more than a higher end SSD :)

    • i think the price is ok

    • +4

      from the same review

OCZ can only compete in price, but unfortunately the pricing isn't aggressive enough for the Trion to be competitive at all.

but that was when the OCZ was more expensive than a Samsung 850 EVO 500GB

      now a EVO is $235 vs OCZ $149 = 63% * 500/480 = 65%

pretty sure thats competing on price.

      • +1

The samsung is 41% faster and will has better reliability, not to mention your comparing a sale to a stock price when the sammy is seemingly on sale 300 days a year.

    • +1

Only the two offered here, for some reason the 960GB drive is excellent.

    • -6

Don't worry about performance the drive is butt ugly!!!

Have a look at the user comparison between Samsung 850 EVO and OCZ Trion
OCZ Trion isn't that great and also not that much cheaper, so not sure if it's worth the savings.

      • The Samsung 850 EVO 500GB is ~$85 more (~155% of the Trion 480GB) at the cheaper retailers.

While I, personally, would go for the EVO because the performance difference is important to me I can absolutely understand getting this for ~$85 less.

Beware that there's a known compatibility issue with this drive and older MacBooks/MacBook Pros with nvidia GPUs and sata 2, no plans to fix either

    http://oczforum.com/forum/discussion/956/ssd-won-t-boot-inte…

    • is the issue with that specific set of hardware or running AHCI on a SATA 2 port?

      • From what I've read you may need to run in IDE mode rather than AHCI on a PC with similar hardware

        • +1

thats a pretty major omission considering the price range is aimed at people with older hardware. Although reading into the comments I see our friends at Toshiba come up… Tempting deal but I REALLY dont want to deal with toshiba should things go south.

        • +1

@BargainKen: absolutely, I was going to buy one to put in my wife's MacBook. Glad I researched first.

    • +1

Only scum bags take peoples money for a product that they don't plan on releasing a fix for. I will never buy ocz or Toshiba because of this!

      • +3

Don't buy a Sony Mobile device then, you are not going to like them.

        • That sucks I really want to buy a z series phone since the z1 came out but I keep holding out the z5 premium is really tempting!

        • +1

@Ronnie23: Great phones mate i have had the Z and Z1 and now Z2! I love my Z2 taken it under water many times and have abused it far beyond what mobile phones can take and its still going! i have cracked the back by dropping it 1.5m onto concrete but that can be fixed easy! I will wait till prices on Z5 hit around $500 mark and buy one!

  • +2

I understand that the PS4 can't utilize/doesn't benefit fully from an SSD, but I need quick load times with Dark Souls 3 coming up. This is tempting…

    • Praise the Sun!

  • How does this compare to standard laptop hard drives

    • +5

It would shit on any mechanical drives found in laptops.

      • Thankyou would it be worth the $149 for the 480gb ocz trion 100 or wait for another 500 gb samsung 850 evo to hit under $200 again

        • Up to you I suppose, I don't think we'll see a samsung or intel drive around this price for a while.. (happy to be proved wrong TA ;)

        • Also how would this compare to crucial m550

        • @ABUKEE:

          Probably poorly

        • -1

          @ABUKEE:

You can be sure that the m550 will shit all over this. And being crucial, a lot more reliable.

    • Definitely faster. Not sure how much but noticeable. I would take the bigger one as the performance seems to be better than the 240GB Drive.

      • Which one is faster ?

        • The SSD.

        • The 480gb drive

    • I have an older slower SSD in my laptop and it still boots from Bios screen to stable in about 4 seconds, so a big jump in performance plus no HDD noise.

  • Don't understand the complains. 4x 240GB drive in Raid 0 and you have a very fast drive with 1TB SSD storage for just $340.-

    • I'm getting rid of 4x256gb drives in raid0 for a single 1tb samsung ssd..

      • +1

Which drives and how much are you after?

    • +1

I can't see a single complaint in the comments. What?

  • Some questions :)
Is this price the cheapest ever on record so far for SSD 480GB size?
Would this be a good buy for first time SSD user?
Any advantage (other than Raids) of using multiple SSDs?

Also I read that SSDs temps are generally higher than HDDs what is the general consensus of safe max operating temp for SSDs to avoid early failures?
Should I just wait for cheaper/get M.2 SSDs? (Assuming there is noticeable real world speed difference, reliability and temps)?

    • +3

Of the top of my head answers:

-No idea if it is the cheapest ever, but it is VERY cheap for the a 480GB SSD. As has been mentioned though, compared to other SSDs it is slow…

-…however, it would still be a good choice for a first time SSD user. A slow SSD is still a LOT faster than a HDD

-Advantage gained by RAID would depend on RAID level. Without going into too much detail, most people talking about RAIDing SSDs are talking about RAID0, which is purely done for speed/performance. Negative is that if one of the drives in the RAID dies, you lose everything. Personally I don't think it is worth the hassle / extra cost- one SSD is fast enough. EDIT, I misread, you asked for advantages gained other than RAID…I guess the answer is there isn't any other than having access to more SSD storage. Personally I like the combo of SSD for boot drive (install operating system and programs) and a larger HDD for 'storage'. Depends on what you want to spend and what you want to do with your computer though.

-No idea where you read that about SSDs and temps. If anything SSDs on average would have lower temps I would have thought. Safe operating temps is not something I'd be worrying about unless you are thinking of some kind of really extreme environment (Mars Rover, Perth etc).

-You can always wait, and things will usually get cheaper. M.2 SSDs are good in that they can potentially be faster, and they take up less 'space' (physically smaller, one less sata/power cable needed etc).

Hope that helps, double check everything I've written though as this is just off the top of my head ;-)

        perth lol

  • +5

Good luck if you have a warranty claim. after the second failure no way i will get another OCZ

    • +1

This OCZ is owned and made by Toshiba with Toshiba parts. Besides the brand name has nothing to do with the old shit products of years ago

  • +2

If only the 1TB/960GB version was double the price at $298. I'd buy it as my Games drive. Not sure to buy 2x480GB since that'll be another SATA port.

  • Is this sata 1 compatible, I want to put it in old macbook pro?

    • All sata specs are backwards compatible.

Considering this drive has issues with even the latest Macs, I wouldn't take the risk.

    • Why, you'd hit the bandwith limit making it pointless

  • damn I got a sandisk ultra II for $161 aud shipped and this deal is even better…. but to be honest at this price point for a 480gb ssd from aussie seller tehre is nothing to complain about +1

    • No the SanDisk is better. Ocz has a terrible history of reliability while SanDisk has the best.

  • that 480gb price is ridiculous, also pleasantly surprised by no paypal/cc surcharge fees.

  • -7

This is a no brainier - do not buy! This is notoriously shit product (as others mentioned) which is reflected by the price. Do two mins of research before purchasing please!

If you're going for an SSD you want speed - this is one of the worst performing SSDs.

If you want to instead use it for storage (with the bonus of faster transfer) this drive is notoriously unreliable and you risk losing your data. Better to have piece of mind.

Weigh up what you save buy buying this drive vs. the cost\time\anger when you realise it must be replaced or RMA'd.

    @PLE Computers
Which version of the firmware do these drives have PLE? Because it would be shameful if your ripping of you customers by knowing selling the more defective older firmware.

Now anticipating down votes on my comment

    • +16

Unfortunately specifics such as firmware versions we do not know until we get the stock.

OCZ are backing these with an advance replacement warranty (if you have a faulty drive they'll dispatch you a new one prior to OCZ receiving your defective one), presumably to try and get some confidence back in the market with their product.

If your decision on buying depends on a firmware version, flick us an email ([email protected]) and we'll endeavour to help you out when we get them!

We're not in the business of ripping off customers, we dug up a deal and present it to the community here at OZ Bargain for everyone to evaluate. PLE is here to support our customers, have been doing so for 25 years :)

      • +2

I really like that OCZ and PLE computers will provide good after sales support for this OCZ SSD deal. Thank you for your response.

I personally hate sellers that give customers run around in case of warranty claim. Keep up the good work PLE Computers.

        • +7

Settle mate, nobody has a gun to your head forcing you to buy one. Did PLE kill your first born?

I wouldn't touch one of these myself but I even +1 this post because it is a bargain.

      • I went through support and warranty claim section of OCZ website, I could not find any information where it indicates that Australian customers are eligible for advance replacement which is applicable in case of certain countries only. I maybe wrong in my understanding, could PLE computers confirm if advance SSD replacement is valid in Australia. Thank you.

    • +2

I purchased a ULTRA II Sandisk ssd 480gb not long ago.. (not from ple) but the point im making it that it only lasted 2 months and then died. Anything and everything can have issues from time to time,

However saying that PLE is ripping of its customers is stupid, its great to inform people to do some research before buying but these comments are really not needed.

  • +1

I had a 120gb one of these in a Lenovo x201 i5, and a Samsung 120gb (just the base model) in an 6 year old i5 Lenovo, bottom priced 15 inch plastic thing, and I definitely noticed a difference in speeds. I reckon it was the OCZ SSD holding me back in my x201, surely the bus speeds would be the same if not faster in the x201. Best to spend a little extra and get the Samsung imho.

  • +1

Maybe not the best for a primary drive but would this be good for an extra "files" drive that isn't accessed quite as much?

    • I agree with you on this.

    • +3

Honestly a HDD would be better value for that.

This is a good deal but if you're not regularly loading an OS or large content (programs, games, video editting stuff etc.) then it's not going to be a big advantage for you.

      • I agree, for under $100 get yourself a Seagate Barra 2TB - 7200 rpm drive as a storage drive.

For a HDD, it's blazingly fast.

Though for a 480GB SSD even if the reviews aint the best, its a great price.

    • It depends on your setup, you can easily get a hard disk as your files drive for 6 times the capacity at the same price. You should keep your main and most important files on your primary so the speed you gain from having these ssd as files drives might not be really worth it.

These OCZ drives are more suitable for those who want an increase in speed (ie booting up, etc) over mechanical hdd but don't want to spend too much. For example, I think an older notebook can make good use of an 240g ssd upgrade of $85 if it has only a mechanical hdd.

  • +1

Might not be the best or fastest, but it's perfect for an external drive.

  • ok

    speed?!?!
    overall rating among benchmarking sites?

  • I've got 4 of the 480gb models running in Raid 0 for steam games and the performance is pretty good, when I ran them individually they weren't the best but if you use them in raid 0 it massively increases the speed.

  • +1

had an OCZ SSD on my mbp 4 years ago. Died within 6months, lost 2 weeks data(didn't backup for 2 weeks), took them 2 months to get back, then tell me it is end of life. Bought a 840 EVO straight away, never have issue till now.

  • Good SSD to put in a PS4?

    Supports Sata2?

    • Ps4 doesn't take advantage of an ssd's speed. You're better off getting 1tb hdd with higher rpm or 2tb hdd for future proof of space.

      • Its True it doesnt, but I was wondering by how much so I did a bit of a google:

        https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InermmePbd4

SSD's clearly load the fastest, so A cheaper, albiet slower SSD would almost be perfect, considering the price is getting much better.

Just wondering if I should hold out for a higher amount of GB's now.

They actual use the OCZ Trion 100 to compare speeds in this video

      • Yep! thanks for link.

Looks like a Perfect SSD for it!

Still wondering if it will drop a little further though.

  • What do guys reckon about using this for an older desktop as a boot drive (SATA 2 only)?
