Been there for a long time. There should be multiple signs at the register and/or near the EFTPOS machine. Paying via credit, which is what Paypass is, incurs a surcharge.

    EDIT: Discussed 2 years ago

  • It's been around for a while I think. If it concerns you, just use savings.

  • The 0.5" surcharge is displayed at the counter — turn your head up and you will see a hanging sign.

    • Half-inch surcharge?!?! Ouch

        Just the tip…

It's always been like that. Check your previous receipts.

Aldi got warned to make the notice more visible some time ago, two years sounds right. If you're getting a 2% or 5% rebate you're still ahead.

  • I think what is confusing is even though your card is a debit cardm when paying by paypass the transaction is treating as a "Credit" transaction and hence incurs the surcharge. You must insert your card into the reader and select "savings".

    • and if you are wanting the 2% rebate with Paypass that goes out the window.

      • Rocky, What's this rebate you're referring to?

ING have a deal giving 2% on any paypass transaction (must be under $100 - not 100 or over)

    • I've always been confused about this.
So I can insert my debit card and select savings to avoid the surcharge?
I was just at Aldi and their sign wasn't very clear on that.
I always withdraw and pay by cash whenever I go.

My aldi says 0.5% surcharge when paying with eftpos.

  • It has been like that for years.

Generally, I have no problems paying 0.5% for credit card transactions at ALDI because they sell groceries at very affordable prices and I understand that their margins are quite low.

Some fancy expensive restaurants charge 2% for credit card transactions, that is really crazy!

  • The tellers always Tell me about the surcharge as soon as they see I'm paying by card

  • Yes, you're still using credit when you use Paypass, thus, you permit any charge that is associated with pressing the Credit button. However, I can certainly understand that if you aren't pressing any buttons, you might not realise that you're still going to be charged the surchage.

To be honest, I don't think the signs are appropriate. They're often on the ceiling after the checkouts, when they need to be really clear prior to reaching the machine. I think there should also be an obvious sign or sticker on the EFTPOS machine, or right behind it, so you know about it.

Yes, once you know, you know. But if you don't, you might not even notice it until it's too late and you've already left the checkout. Every store has it a little different.
