Have Aldi always added a tax for contact less payments??

So, I went into aldi for a couple of things and decided to use paypass. I checked the receipt as I was walking out of the store to see I had been charged an extra 7c for my contactless payment. Is this normal?? I've never heard of any store doing this!

Yes, they have always levied a merchant charge for credit payment, which PayPass/Wave is.

But if you are getting the 5% Ing rebate you are still ahead.

Credit above means going through the credit payment system, not whether your card is a CC or DC.

  • I had no idea about that! If I had known that (as there was no signage), I would have put my pin in. It all comes from the 'savings' account anyway. I know it's only 7c,but a sign next to the eftpos machine would go far for tight asses like me :-(

    • They do have signs about this. But now you know.

      • Sometimes you gota learn the hard way. Hehe

7c is cheap to know that you are protected by credit payment policy when you do contactless.

Pin or not, it is still a card transaction, all eftpos/credit (or debit) card will incur the 0.5% fee.

Get yourself an ING card, it will give you 5% rebate of the transaction amount in 2 working days. If you've already used an ING card (which I.. have a small inclination to doubt), the ME bank savings account also has a debit card that gives you 5% rebate, but it turns up in your account after 30 days.

Yep, already had the ing card. Used that. Was awesome. Not sure I wana keep signing up with more banks though. I was trying to convince my partner to get the ing card so I could refer and get my 5% cashback, but he's not as tight as me

        • What is "protected by credit payment policy" ?

        • +1

Read your T&C, things like liability, etc.

        • Well how is that different from Uncontactless ?
ie entering PIN into machine - either selecting savings cheque or credit card.

        • PIN operation would be a direct debit if a DC. Also no $100 limit on transaction.

Aldi levy the 0.5% on all card transactions. What I wrote was 7c is cheap to know that it's a credit transaction, not to get the extra protection for that purchase.

        • How is someone "protected" by "Credit Payment Policy" by using contactless ?

or if you prefer How is someone "unproctected" by not using contactless.

Have you a link to the T & C you are referring to ?

        • When you pay by contactless it's a credit transaction. When you pay by PIN on a DC it's a debit transaction. I leave you to do your own homework on your card provider's T&C. FWIW Ing suggest selecting credit payment when possible.

Don't be lazy, do your own homework. You've come a full circle in your questions.

        • When you pay by PIN on a DC it's a debit transaction

When you swipe or insert your card, you can choose either savings or credit.

        • That's true, I should have qualified it as "can be".

Nope, with swiping the card and selecting savings account, not credit, there is no fee.

Ok, noted. That seems to be the case from

When there is no Ing rebate, I prefer to pay cash rather than EFTPOS, because it's disincentive to spend. Aldi is also one of the few places where they don't blink to give you change for $50 for a small purchase.

        • Just to clarify, the FAQ says credit card payments attract a 0.5% surcharge. What they actually mean is all purchases done using the credit account will attract 0.5% surcharge. So, please be aware that even if you use a debit card, you would still pay the 0.5% surcharge if you select the credit account, irrespective of PIN entry. This is also applicable to contactless transactions as currently, all contactless transactions default to the credit account, no matter what card is used.

The only way to avoid paying the surcharge is to swipe/insert a Debit Card and select Cheque/Savings account.

I have noticed very often that this is not always clarified at the checkout registers.

    • Went to aldi today,, no signage of surcharge for card payments.

      • -1

There is - right next to/at the register.

  • Merged from Aldi charging .5% to use paywave at check out

Went to Aldi to buy a few things. At the checkout, I was going to use paywave as I've always done and the chashier informed that there would be a 1% charge for using paywave with a credit card and urged me insert my credit card into the eftpos device and tap in my pin. I informed her that my card is not a credit card, but an eftpos/debit card. She said it didn't matter. I was curious and paywaved any way and .5% surcharge was added. Total inc GST $23.97. There was a line item for credit surcharge of .11 cents and a final total called "Card Sales" for $24.08.

This might be a sign of things to come from all retail outlets now that we are used to the convenience and retailers used to diminishing queues because of speedy transactions.

Paywave by default process the transaction as a "credit", which means it goes through VISA/Mastercard instead of EFTPOS. Your debit card allows you to make payments over the credit card network with balance on your account.

Aldi has always charged a fee on credit transactions.

Does anybody know what this guy is talking about ?
