    • Of course. You can also print filament with it!

      • so you can print yourself an even better/more expensive 3d printer?

  • Wow, this is fantastic, I remember buying my first 3D printer, it cost $5,000 at the time. Like my first CD 2x Writer $900 or my first 15" LCD $1,000 or my first 21" CRT $1,100

    • what do print with it?

Why the need to buy so earlier at a high price?

  • It's exciting but the tech is still too immature for me. When more durable plastics become available at commodity prices I will bite

  • +1

So can you print kids figurines?
I can save a fortune printing Peppa Pig & Shopkins crap

    • +2

No you wouldn't as they'd cost more than the cheap Chinese knockoff versions you could buy on aliexpress for 20c a pop and still look worse lol

  • -4

Can this be used to print out an ALDI store?..

    • -4

In which they sell 3D printers that can…

      • -4

        .. Print more ALDI stores!

        • -2

          BOOM!!

  • +2

Can I use this to print Excel files?

  • -6

    Bloody-hell… such an expensive gimmick-hobby.

Clearly, still too much disposable income in Australia.

  • That is a huge markup on PLA. The good thing is that PLA is biodegradable.

  • -3

can I make a gun with this?

    • Yes…. Replica with a bit of sanding/airbrush. Real guns will more like blow up in your hands.

  • Damn you murphy… all this talk of Aldi Prusas has made the PSU on my one give up the ghost. Vale ATX psu, you had a long life (14 years)

  • This 3D printer is useful if anyone using it to print fashion eyewear. Two pairs of Rayban cost more than this printer.

  • Interesting - especially now since Aldi has opened some stores in SA

  • From my research it seems a Prusa i3 would give slightly better prints than this one ? Just from comments on 3d printing forums. Perhaps due to the additional tinkering that can be done with a DIY kit, vs a almost ready to go Wanhao, which depends on the person that built it at the factory.

Kossel Mini looks interesting, apparently Deltas should give better prints but are harder to calibrate.. Has auto-levelling.

Obviously stores will have limited stock, but for anyone wondering, my store appears to have only 2 (unless more have arrived now, but they've been in for over a week.)

    • which store is that?

    • Whoops, those 2 became 8. Should be plenty of stock for the initial demand.

  • 'Starts on Saturday' what???

    • +1

Today.. had a looked 30mins ago… 5 stocks. I didnt buy because its too heavy to carry on my bike..:(

      • Went to Kellyville, had 4 left (someone took one already), bought 1 more so 3 left there. Each pallet holds 5. But I guess Castle Hill just didn't stock it yet.

        • Went back and got one…last one left in the city. 18kg with filement soo heavy.

        • @melb-ourne:
Nice score. If that was the same store that you visited earlier, 4 gone in that hour!
Won't have much stock looking later in the week anywhere.
However, there were quite a large stockpile of the 3D pens.

      • Print a cycle rack

There were 5 at Fortitude Valley and 5 St Newmarket QLD. All 5 at the valley are gone.

Only 1 in stock at West End (QLD) and it was snapped up by the guy waiting in front of me for the doors to open. I asked a staff member who turned out to be the store manager and he said that was all they had left however the checkout dude said he saw three come in so he and the store manager had a 'discussion'. Manager went out the back to check but came out a minute later confirming they had two more but they were for transfer to another store. All good though as I wasn't 100% sure I really wanted one so that just sealed the deal ;) The checkout dude then told me that apparently the Stones Corner store had lots so if you're in the Brisbane inner-city area best to check there first.

  • +1

I got one at Reservoir (Vic), there were two left when I was there at opening.

It was pretty easy to set up, the only issue was that the bed had to be rotated to remove a loop/tangle in the rear facing cable track, although I only saw it after I'd attached the four screws so I had to undo them all to fix it.

The file for the thumbscrews to replace the wingnuts on the bed that all the reviews say is a must, was included on the SD card that came with it and I'm printing these now.

So far so good, I just hope that if the novelty wears off, it does so within the 60 day return period!

  • Got the last one in South Melbourne, 30 minutes after opening. Saw 2 people leaving the store with one before me though.

  • Can anyone post their first impressions about the printer? (apart from astro81 :P)

    • Its Heavy 15kg…lol

I dont think i will open it until someone do a full review…just case i need to return it.

Just got mine. I have build 3 3D printers, one from 100% scratch. so I know printers well. Lets get started on m first impressions.

Getting it out of the box was like wrestling an octopus. 3 different parts attached by cables…

It comes with a build surface sticker and a second one attached. Big plus there.
Firmware is FIRMWARE_NAME:Repetier_0.91. It's a nice firmware. Another plus.
Lead screws for Z axis. Big plus.
Bearings feel firm with no play.
4 point bed leveling. That's a minus. 3 point is so much easier to get right, but if it had auto tramming/leveling, who cares..
No auto leveling/tramming. Big big Minus there. I'll be installing a LJ12A3-4-Z/BX once I test it works with this bed sticker. You just wont know now good auto leveling is until you us it..
USB cable end was too short to plug into USB socket and work. antoher minus there. I ran a knife around the end and took about 2mm off. Baud rate is 115200 BTW…
Good size LCD screen.. Plus :)
Cabling for bed does not run cleanly and got caught on first time homming. It need to be improves, at least just a plate above the bed motor to stop the wire getting caught down there. Minus there..
Extruder looks nice but it is plastic parks. Looks like a plastic Mark 9. If it causes problems it's out. Will wait to judge this one.
I really really like this steel frame.

If you are thinking about one I say get it. Great price. Looks to be built right, and 60 days return.

    • Thanks for the review!

    • Thx..

Very happy with the printer. The instructions and videos were fantastic, people from the global Wanhao i3 community are already recommending them. So far the default prints have worked well except the horn of the unicorn example, which i feel could be corrected in the gcode although I'm not a pro at this. Here 's a picture.

There where a lot ( 10 ?) at Carrum Downs when I went a few hours ago. There in the side room. You have to ask for them.

      Thanks for sharing :)

Got a 3D printer yesterday from Carrum Downs.
It's a cool new toy but took bit of time to set it up.

  • I only bought the filament. I wasn't expecting much but I've gotta say it's up there with the verbatim filament I was using before this. It looks nice and glossy, there's no stringing and the perimeters are looking great. Only problem is now I doubt they will keep stock for when I want some more. Otherwise it would be my new go to filament.

  • is this legal?? fallout 3 life size Repica Pistol…http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1047210

I want to print one but dont cops arresting me??

    • Its a non functioning pistol…. you should be fine.

      • Thx alot…

        • "Non functioning" isn't the only thing.

Assuming you're in Victoria as per your profile, have a read of VIC Police's Quick Guide to Imitation, Toy & Other firearm paraphernalia (1.2 MB PDF) (emphasis mine):

As a general rule, toy firearms are considered items that resemble firearms, but cannot reasonably be mistaken as working firearms by the general public, and do not have the functionality of working firearms. As such, toy firearms can be lawfully possessed by anyone within the State of Victoria.

Note on page 4, the "defining characteristics of toy firearms" includes:

3 They have a resemblance to a firearm, however their appearance cannot reasonably be mistaken for a working firearm by a reasonable person. Some characteristics that influence this determination may include:
          * The shape and size is of a kind not associated with a working firearm; and
          * The overall colouring is not normally associated with a working firearm; and
          * The materials used in their manufacture create the immediate impression that the device cannot be functional.

Page 4's toy examples includes a similar style toy gun to what you want to print.

As far as being arrested, your behaviour and actions would be a factor in that - you don't want to be stupid in public or menace someone with it.

        • @Thrift:

Which is also why the replica firearms they sell at Comicon etc have bright orange end pieces at the end of the barrel.

        • @Thrift:
I had the plans/site, for the file to make a firearm. I gave it to a Police Officer at Gun Licensing a few years back. He had no idea this could be done. LOL

  • Levelling this thing is a pain. Is there any way to add auto leveling to this thing?

    • +3

I printed out the M3 Thumbscrews and bought some M3 nuts for it. It makes a whole lot difference in leveling. The stupid wing nut was crap.

      • the m3 thumbscrew is crap, it does not have any threads.

that wing nut is a pain to screw

        • the m3 thumbscrew is crap, it does not have any threads.

You're meant to insert nuts into them.

        • They are designed to hold an M3 nut: http://i.imgur.com/pu0RU1g.jpg

They are a lot better than the wingnut.

        • +1

@Thrift: Someone designed a wingnut thumbscrew but unfortunately the download link doesn't work. Looks easy enough to design yourself though.

        • @Thrift:

Why my one printed is circle inside the m3, not the shape of that inner nut?

Also I just need to buy that inner nut, and can use the original screw with the wingnut?

Yet, this levelling is a pain.

Also it is too slow to print anything too complex
and the quality is not very good..

I got some designs from thingverse, and try to print something but is not as good print quality as the designs that came with the aldi printer..

any idea how to fix this?

        • @tyler.durden:

Why my one printed is circle inside the m3, not the shape of that inner nut?

Did you print out the file that came on the SD card? Or one you downloaded from elsewhere?

and the quality is not very good.

A lot of people find the quality to be excellent for what the printer is. You need to make sure you're printing with correct settings, appropriate speed, appropriate temps, level bed. There's a decent Whirlpool thread and a Facebook group full of tips and troubleshooting.

For the things you're downloading from Thingiverse, are you downloading gcode files, or slicing objects yourself in Cura? If you're downloading gcode, it contains pre-baked settings in the file, which might not be correct for the Cocoon Create printer.

        • @Thrift:

          thanks.

          did u create it yourself?

          how did u do it?
          and get the right dimensions?

          ===

yes, I used the m3 file on the sd card.

but the hole is a circle, not hexagon etc..like the image you posted.

          ==

I also use cura to convert it to gcode..
I followed the settings in the manual.
Not sure if it is 100% correct.

Can u post a screenshot of your settings?

          ===

The printer is cool, but I don't see it is much use to print stuff on thingverse, cos it is so slow.

Some items can take as long as 10 hours.
while other simple items are about 3 hours.

I think the 3D printing is much better when we can buy this

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpH1zhUQY0c

Right now it is just too slow.

Also PLA plastic is more weaker/flexible so not as good as ABS.
and this printer I don't think can do ABS very well because it is an open airflow design.

Has anyone tried ABS on this yet?
Also any modifications can be done, to make it an enclosed 3D printer for ABS.

          ===

Are u gonna keep your printer or return it by 60 days?

        • +1

@tyler.durden: You design your own objects using 3D modelling software. I use Blender (free and open source), however it's not the easiest to use if you're not familiar with 3D modelling, in which case Sketchup (free) is really easy to use.

The dimensions are set in the 3D modelling software, though you can scale the entire object in Cura if needed. For the wingnut thumbwheel, I took a few measurements and modelled with Blender set to metric units then exported in OBJ format. Imported the OBJ into Cura, checked the dimensions were correct and saved the gcode, then printed it.

Here's a good explanation of setting up Cura for this printer. (The Cocoon Create is basically a Wanhao Duplicator i3).

3D printing is slow, but that's where the technology currently is. Timewise it's worth it being able to design and print custom things.

I wanted a tripod mount for my OzBargain HTC RE camera that exposed the USB socket for external power and allowed another magic-arm segment to piggy-back. A bit of modeling, a bit of printing, and now I have my camera mount.

Someone on Whirlpool posted their DIY enclosure: https://goo.gl/photos/qAi5q4tqrBjXZ2Jy5

I'm more than happy with the Cocoon Create printer - I'll definitely be keeping it.

        • @Thrift:

Actually the technology of 3D printing is more advance than this

          It is now this

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UpH1zhUQY0c

          https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihR9SX7dgRo

But the price for those printers are too expensive.

          ==

Yes, the idea of being able to print your own stuff sounded cool at first
but after using it for a while..
and realizing that just to print something simple from thingverse
would take 3 hrs and more complex item 10+ hrs..

Also this bed is way too small, to print anything too big or cool
e.g. Fallout gun, real gun etc.

          The novelty wears off quickly.

          ====
Do u think this can print ABS or that well?
Or do u need to mod it to make it enclosed case?

          ===

can u post some gcode and images of items u printed?

        • @tyler.durden: > Actually the technology of 3D printing is more advance than this

Not that you can buy yet. Those videos are a year old (their patents are two years old) and they are still developing their product.

I should have said 'affordable consumer technology', you can get much faster printers than this Cocoon if you're prepared to spend the money.

Do u think this can print ABS or that well?

With the correct settings it prints ABS fine, but if you're not impressed with the PLA results, ABS isn't going to make a difference.

can u post some gcode and images of items u printed?

Apart from the thumbscrews and the twisted six-sided vase that came on the SD card, I've only printed my own purpose-built objects like replacement components for appliances and gadgets. As such, they'll have little practical or aesthetic value to anyone else.

If you're just interested in some examples, you'll find them in the groups I linked, and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bd5EvrnQC5Q&t=300

        • @Thrift:

Yes, what I mean is when we can buy that laser etch printer in the TED talk
and see how fast it was able to print that complex object during that TED talk

When we can buy that, is when I think 3D printer would be much more practical and useful

But right now it too damn slow.

10+ hrs is way too long.

I also concern about the longevity of this machine, if it needs to work for 10+ hrs regularly
          and also the electricity cost.

          ===
So u find the PLA strong enough for replacement parts?

Can u post some of your printed parts?
And how u get the measurement to be exact?

Did u just use a tape measure?

          ====

I also hope one day we can get a 3D scanner, then would can scan real world items to be printed.
          if we need replacement parts.

        • @tyler.durden:

But right now it too damn slow.

Surely you did a bit of research before spending $499?

I also hope one day we can get a 3D scanner, then would can scan real world items to be printed.
          if we need replacement parts.

You can, there's a number of them out there, some using dedicated hardware, some with modified Kinect cameras.
Here's a new one that's looking for Kickstarter funding.

        • @Thrift:
can u please add numbers and markings to the thumbwheel

          like this

On a side note, I wonder how many people printed something naughty when they first received it. I never forget the images my friend printed with his Epson Inkjet printer in 1997. ;-)

  • For anyone still looking for stock, while doing a shop at the Monbulk store I thought i would randomly ask if they had any left, I was very pleased when the staff member said yes. Was in a sealed box so not a return. It was out the back, they may still have more, sorry didn't ask.

There's 2 in stock @ aldi Corio as of 9th March, still same price
