ASUS T100HA 10.1" Transformer Book $342 Harvey Norman

450

They've upgraded these since the T100TA, they now boast up to 12 hours battery life, the new Type C USB 3.0 Connector, and a faster Cherry Trail Quad Core Intel Atom Z8500 CPU up to 2.24GHz and the associated increase in performance to the integrated graphics.

Unfortunately it is still somewhat crippled by only 2GB RAM (soldered), and a very meh screen but its fine for general use.

These used to be a bargain at $450 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/130839.
For $342 for the upgraded model seem like a pretty stellar deal.
Today only so get it while you can.

Remember to take advantage of Harvey Normans $25 newsletter signup offer and see if officeworks stocks the same model to get a price match.

  • SSD swapable?

No the hard drive storage is soldered onboard eMMC flash memory as far as i am aware, slower than an SSD, sort of like a soldered on SD Card but a little faster. Not user changeable as far as i know. best bet for increasing storage is add a 128GB or 200GB fast MicroSD card thanks to the MicroSD Slot

        Nope then.

I thought you were going to say "thanks to TA" for a second

    1280x800 LOL..

      • +4

        Woah there, calm down horsey.

      • +1

Well, this has a MUCH higher pixel density than a 15.6" 1366x768 display, I'm sure at $342 you wouldn't be complaining if a laptop had one of those.

        • +3

          It's higher PPI than a 1080p 15.6inch screen, 141.2 compared to 149.5.

        • +2

@dyl: Holy moly I didn't even think of that. They definitely wouldn't be complaining if it had one of those.

    • Upgrade from my MSI Wind u100, 1024x600 LOL.

      At least it's >720p, and at 10" that's a lot more detail.

There is a slightly different version of this laptop on Amazon with 4GB RAM and SSD for ~$436 delivered. I bought one a couple of months ago and it seems pretty reasonable.

    • Are you sure that model has an SSD? The official spec sheet says eMMC, though admittedly the text in the description refers to SSD. See http://store.asus.com/us/item/201508AM070000885/A38616

      • People are always making that mistake though

      • Amazon told me it had an SSD and I believed them. Is there any way to check without opening it up?

        • +1

eMMC is a type of SSD (Solid State Drive). You can be almost certain that it does contain eMMC, as thats what they all have. Technically they didn't lie to you, you just had a different perception/understanding of what you were getting.

        • They Obi-Wan'ed your arse.

    All Aboard the Night Train!!!

    It's Cherry Trail btw.

    • ah whoops good spot

Screen in the T100 was really bad, I sold mine 1 week after buying it. Is this one much better or still rubbish?

  • +1

Don't want to ask a stupid question but is this touch screen?

    • +1

yes it is :) I've heard stupider questions on here its ok. But yes the keyboard is removable allowing you to use it in tablet mode with touch screen.

      • No such thing as a stupid question

  • slot in 128Gb microsd and good to go for extra space (music, movie, etc) :)

    • +2

Careful though, I was planning on doing the same with the X205TA I bought last year, unfortunately the SD card slot only runs at something like 12Mbps, SUUUUUPPPER slow. It is sadly much quicker to use a USB2 SD adapter… I assume this netbook will be the same.

      • well then…. so much for me buying a X205TA this week, im so glad i read this!!

  • The reviews killed my interest

    • You will find it hard to find a 2-in-1 windows machine at this price
There is one similar HP machine if you like that in HN bargain posted recently

      • Anything around the $300 mark is always going to have significant trade-offs. Same is the case for the Lenovo 100s i bought… but the price, $209.. that made it brilliant.

  • anyone ever tried one of the many chinese 2 in 1s compared to this? Tend to have 4GB RAM and 1080p screens for around the same price.

    • +3

      And full of spyware.

I wouldn't touch a Chinese tablet/computer if I had sensitive data on it.

    • 4gb ddr2 833mhz RAM and 100nits 1080p crappy panel good luck with that

  • 1280 x 800 screen.

Unfortunately there aren't many options for 10 inch windows tablet with a good ipad like screen.

  • How do I get the $25 voucher from the Newsletter?

    • FML, expired whilst waiting for the $25 voucher. -_-

      • +2

        Probably a good thing.

I had the previous version and returned it because with 2gb ram it's unusable.

        Not worth $350.

These things should be priced at around $200 to be a bargain.

        • Sold my acer iconia a501 tablet - had only 1 gb ram. haha 2gb would be heaven. Not sure though with current day android OS and the like how 2gb would run though.

  • Hi Freefall101.

Silly me bought one of those Chinese Spy machines with crappy 1080p screen on a 11.6" touchscreen display. Yes, I was a bit sus to start off with.

    http://www.gearbest.com/tablet-pcs/pp_261673.html

Had it for a month. Extremely happy. Bought it to replace an aging 10" netbook and my aging eyes. I couldn't mistake it for an i3, but it is pretty bloody quick surfing the net with multiple tabs and browsers opened while playing a HEVC 8Gb file. This was running in Win10-64bit. That was my bit of testing.

Have not installed Handbrake to test video conversion. May be later for a laugh, but don't want to set the thing on fire .. yet.

For a bit of fun for the kids, I reboot to Android for them to play games.

The only thing is, it can only drive an external Hdisk at USB2 speed via the USB3 plug. Sticks go quick at USB3 speed. The battery should last the long flights at about 8 hours playing time.

    For your info

  • Does this come with the keyboard as pictured above?

Silly question but this usb c thing that is the latest gen usb connection - for all of us with the standard usb plugs still (usb 2/3) do you just buy a converter plug? Going to be a pain while everything transitions whereby previously all usb cords have worked for a number of years over many devices :(

I miss the days of the 9"-10" netbooks for $200-350 back when it was all the rage. Sure you can get a convertible tablet now adays but somehow the price seems to be well north of 400-500+ i find for a decent ram/specs one as opposed to the old netbook days…

    • Yes comes with the keyboard. Not sure about the usb c situation, I would hope in comes with an adaptor but i see no mention of it.

      • ahh ok, no worries thanks anyway. Adapter probably costs a fair bit i assume :(

        • $3 from hong kong, $6 for local, $15 for hub. From Ebay

  • Ah the keyboard IS EXTRA .. careful if you are looking at US$ too. I bought a good tablet cover/stand (hard to find) and use an existing wireless keyboard and mouse. Works a treat. Love that right click.

Mine is just a USB 3 connection - not a problem. Just don't use the ultra fit thumb drive to fit in, it overheats on idle and the system will eject it. Currently using Cruzer Fit (usb2) much slower but no problem as extra storage. Work with all the many thumb drive that I have, just not the Ultra Fit.

Not a $200 Netbook with 2Gb, that can only run win10 with a ten second delay on every click — OMG. This thing is worth the extra money, it is actually quick. And 1080p touchscreen and not 600p on the netbook.

    • you must be looking at something else. We are looking at the one linked in the OP from Harvey Norman that DOES come with the attached Keyboard

  • Also for the record i am NOT associated with Harvey Norman, dunno how to change it now.
