  • Looks nice, shame I already have well enough of these kind of cards ;)

  • +2

too bad already got 64gb from shopping express australia day deal

this price will keep dropping anyways

  • please do 32gb next time, preferably with a slightly faster version :)

    • +9

What's with the "ugly" comments on microSD…??
I'm truly baffled. When/How/Why would you see it… And Who Cares?!??

        • +3

Why would you buy over 10 if you're not happy with them?

        • +5

          You bought 10+

          The rest is noise.

        • @Utopian:
The 32gb cards were listed here for around $8-$10 each and that was a while ago and was the cheapest ever so I bought at least 10. I gave a lot away to family and friends.
Obviously this was a great deal and I ordered them before I tested them.
Like I said the card is good if the price is right and you don't need good speeds otherwise it's true that it's for those who have lower needs.

To fill this card up with lots of movies and games would take up to 3x slower than some other cards
          Really depends on usage

        • +3

@thelastnoob: There you go. It is good for its purpose (fast enough for full HD video recording, and has faster random 4k write speed than a number of higher model cards e.g. the newer EVO+ card). For its value it is a very versatile card. To call it ugly and slow is unfair.

        • +1

          @edfoo:
Actually that was my opinion and I never negged the deal. I thinks its useful if someone esp the poster points out the actual real world specs for people to consider since memory cards performance is primarily based on speed.
Plus the amount of slower card deals that get posted is disappointing.

    • +2

You really live up to your name :P

  • +3

    Referrer? or Representative?

    Confusing

    • FYI guidelines are here: Guide for Third-Party Site Operators

Moderators will come around and mark the post as 'referrer' as necessary, this isn't always done automatically.

Referrer for mentioning a third party website you are associated with in the deal description (subject to referral posting limits).
Associated/store rep if you are associated with the store for the deal itself (does not apply in this case as it's PC Byte).

      • +1

        Thanks. I was also interested.

  • I need a new card for my digital camera (Olympus omd em10), is something like this fine or would I notice a difference compared to a faster card? I'm really not sure if it even matters.

    • For photos, you will not see much of different. Sometime for high quality videos you need better card than this one. I don't know the specs of your camera and I am too lazy to Google that.

  • why buy 128gb when there's 200gb on the market. we all know you'll want more storage sooner than later.
if you end up buying both cards, you won't save money. it's better to buy the higher capacity and not have to upgrade.

    • +6

If you are doing it for a digital camera it's better to shoot a few days photos on one card then swap to another cause then if something happens to your camera/card during the trip at least you don't lose all of your photos you have taken. Especially with these larger cards if the filesystem decides to corrupt itself and ask to be formatted you can avoid using the card and still take photos on your other one then recover the photos with software when you get home.

      • solution is to backup daily

also get a cloud storage backup

        • Yeah but if you are backing up every day the point of grabbing a 200gb card becomes a bit mute. Unless you are doing something odd like long recordings of 4k.

        • +2

@kasp: Backing up isn't the same as moving the files off your card. You can still have all your data on the card, you're just making a copy of it elsewhere.

It goes without saying that if you don't backup, you will one day lose your data. The card can fail, or your phone can get stolen or left behind somewhere.

With free automated solutions readily available, it's quite silly not to have a backup. At the very least, enabling Google's free unlimited cloud backup will let you have some form of backup.

You can also use an app like FolderSync to automatically copy your phone/tablet's microSD card to your home NAS or computer while you sleep.

      • @Agret
Excellent, cheap, simple advice I follow myself - Learnt the hard way.
It could be damage, failure, theft, loss… anything.
Cloud/backup options aren't always an option - particularly for those of us who travel very lite & remote. (still good advice, of course)

        • For people who travel light and use their phone as their primary camera and don't have access to wifi, I think it's a good idea to bring along a USB OTG thumb drive and back up to that.

    • +8

why buy 128gb when there's 200gb on the market.

Because this is $65. Cost-per-GB is cheaper than a 200GB card.

it's better to buy the higher capacity and not have to upgrade.

If 128GB is enough storage for the next 2-3 years, you can buy a fresh new 200GB card in January 2019 for maybe $45.
That way you'll have 328GB of storage for $110 instead of 200GB for $150. Seeing that flash memory wears out with use, it's a good idea to replace your cards anyway.

  • +2

thanks again TA, perhaps a 64gb full size sd deal around the corner? wink

    • +5

      Stay tuned :)

    • +3

      comes with adapter

      why bother with full size?

this is much more useful since it can be microsd or SD

      • Full size has faster speeds available

        • there's also faster microsd but they cost more..

        • +1

all in all though full size tends to be faster, i have an old class 4 sandisk that has considerably better performance than my samsung evo micro, in all aspects except for sequential read.

in my experience, adapters are quite fragile.

i think it's also a matter of preference.

edit: i actually did some googling, i'm so bored, and it turns out the physical size really doesn't matter, there's simply no way to do an accurate comparison because the cards are fundamentally different… no surprise really. the old sandisk is just awesome.

  • +2

Samsung EVO never again! I just had a 6 month old 32GB card fail on me. Been trying for days to recover photos from it and from the deleted partitions of other drives. Around 500-1000 lost photos from 2013-14 that can't be replaced. This from a product with a 10 year warranty…

    • Indeed, I use(d) a 32GB evo in my dSLR in second slot purely just for backups.. less than 6 months old it is dead. Wouldn't of even hit 32GB of data on it.

      • No issues with mine to date. Anyway I reckon these memory price will come down in price. Would buy one if I don't have those purchased towards end of 2015 memory frenzy.

    • +1

      Its called "making a backup".

      • +1

That was the backup! I copied all my older photos to SD card to organise on my tablet because it's much easier to just swipe a finger than use Windows, then reformatted Windows. They were going to go from the SD card to OneDrive but it failed for no apparent reason..

        • +3

Should always have two existing copies of anything important..

then upload that to onedrive before deleting one of those copies.

          That was your mistake…

        • @tyler.durden: Not really, it's the cards mistake for being faulty. If a product fails, that's not the persons fault who is using it. What kind of logic is that?

        • +2

          @Orpheus:

It's not his fault that the card failed, but it is his mistake.

It's his mistake for relying on the SD card as his only source of photos instead of keeping 2 copies until he can get it onto the cloud.

          ===

Doesn't matter if card is faulty or not.

          Shit happens.

Murphy's Law - Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong

You should always have backup plan in case of shit happening especially if it involves precious things that are hard to recover things like photos.

I've seen a number of Sandisk cards fail between me and my friends (several 16, 32, and 64GB cards), in our phones and my car dashcam.
All of us switched to Samsung and haven't seen a single failure since.

And if you only keep one copy of your photos, you're asking for it to be lost.

      • If the cards are sitting in a dash cam, I presume it will go through much higher usage. Interesting to hear though.

        • Yes, I replaced the dashcam's Sandisk card with a Samsung card. It lasted longer than the Sandisk, and is still going now.

        • +1

I have used an older model class 10 Samsung card in my Mini 0801 dash cam for over 2 years, and then added a Samsung EVO card in another unbranded dash cam for my rear window for under 1 year, in my daily drive. Both cards are still running strong.

    • Unfortunately nothing is full proof even it has 10 years warranty tag. It could be any factor that will cause it to fail.

    • +1

Same here. I purchased a Samsung EVO micro SD card from ShoppingSquare in late 2015 when the eBay "click15" offer was active. I've already emailed SS who have given me an RMA to send it back. Given that it was purchased via eBay with PayPal, I'll be looking to send it using the Refunded Returns scheme.

    • Download the test disk package and try to use the photorec exe. Even if you have a 64 bit windows get the 32 bit version as the 64 bit version is missing a lot of functionality.

      http://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk_Download

If this doesn't get your files back then try R-Studio which costs money but it by far the best data recovery software available.

      http://www.r-studio.com/Data_Recovery_Download.shtml

These are by far the best way you can recover data at home.

    TA or Rep

Any chance to get some deals on this PRO+ for my 4K camcorder?

    http://pcbyte.com.au/index.php/samsung-64gb-pro-plus-micro-s…

  • +1

Thanks TA, always love your work, however its always the same cards being offered I see. Any chance to get some awesome arse deals on 128GB+ U3 cards? :D
or anything suitable for 4K recording?

  • +1

When you already have cards from previous deals sitting in the drawer, it is time to stop buying no matter how good the deal is.

  • Thanks TA, great deal on a great card (CR makes it so much better!).

  • Has anyone tried using these for HD video recording - need a Micro SD card for the new gopro hero+ lcd i bought, entry level so not as powerful as the hero4 silver etc but it still needs 1080p capable cards? As far as I heard you need a class 10 card and i think over the 40 mb/s recommendation for write speed etc?

    Would this card suffice?

    • +1

You definitely won't have problems recording full HD on a GoPro with this card.

      • Any reason?

        • +1

This is a screenshot of the Crystal Disk Mark benchmark of my Samsung EVO 32GB micro SD card: https://c1.staticflickr.com/1/755/22440454081_c792bb75c3_o.p…

As you can see it has 33.73MB/s sequential write speed, which is more relevant to large video files than the much slower random 4k file write speed. I have the higher model GoPro Hero 4 Silver, it can record 1080p Protune mode in 45Mb/s, which is equivalent to 5.625MB/s. So even giving the GoPro some head room, The EVO can handle my GoPro recording without trouble.

        • @edfoo:

I bought the evo+ just to be on the safe side for my action cam:)

        • @sinishta: EVO+ is better for video recording due to its faster sequential write speed.

        • @edfoo: Isn't that like saying a highway with a 200km/h speed limit is better for a 1984 Honda that can only do 100km/h max?

If the sole purpose for the card is to record full HD video on a GoPro, the extra money you pay for a faster card would be completely wasted.

        • @eug: Yes you are right too, but I don't know what type of action cam sinishta is using. May be he is planning to record 4K video with his Sony action cam which requires 100Mbps, which theoretically an EVO should be able to handle but I am not sure. So EVO+ is a safer bet. Anyway sinishta has already bought it, so might as well use it. The faster sequential read speed of his EVO+ also helps him in transferring those large video files from the card to his/her computer too.

        • @edfoo:

My understanding is that all 128GB cards have slower writes than the 32/64GB versions.
Best to look up the Amazon reviews to find the speed for the 128 but its not great…

        • @Danthemanz:

@edfoo - is the EVO+ the same as the "pro" ones? I was looking at the 'recommended' card list for gopro cameras and there are the odd samsungs in there, one of them excluded is the 128 gb samsung card as not compatible with the hero+ LCD /hero+ line (mines hero +LCD).

So appears bar the top of line hero 4's, the rest can't take 128 GB sd card capacities, let alone read/write speed.

I'm surprised the ground level evo card with class 10 capabilities has such a high writing speed relative to what a gopro needs? Maybe i'm getting confused with 'writing speed' references to 'write sequential speed', as I thought you needed lcose to 40 or more mb/s write speed for a go pro?

THen again I am a little confused by you saying the gopro can write in 45 Mb/s which is equivalent to 5.625 MB/S? I thought write speeed of XX Mb/S WAS the actual write speed? Probbaly getting confused on terminology?

        • @SaberX:

EVO+ is far from the Pro.
Evo+ has some faster read speeds, but the write isnt much better from what ive seen.
I cant help you really with GoPro but i can generically.
Please make sure not to confuse MegaBytes/S (MB/s) with Megabit/s (Mb/s).

Any write speed you see for an SD card is the write speed for video, its small files thats different.
I would also recommend ignoring all manufacturer claims and read the benchmarks from the Amazon reviews, its not hard to work out who knows what they are talking about.

          Best of luck.

    • Check the Gopro compatibility for 128gb cards for different models, I believe some have artificial limits on capacity.

      • Just posted a resposne int he commonts line above yours, appears the gopro compatability web page doesn't list 128 GBs as being compatible with say the hero + LCD model which I have… :(

  • Would people recommend one of these for an MS Surface 3 ?

  • finally found one at the right price, held off for months getting one of these, would have gotten more if not for the limit of 1. Ozbargain does it again.

  • Which usb 3.0 thumb adapter would you guys recommend for this microsd?
    Thanks.

  • hot damn great price but really after a 64gb one

    • +1

You just missed Shopping Express's Strayan Day sale of $27 - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/231790

      • ARGH! Serves me right for going out =\

        • You can go out but you need to check OB time to time again.

        • @edfoo:

they had it cheaper at $26.

          It will get cheaper anyways.

By year end, 128gb hopefully will hit $30 price

  • Is it possible to use this with an adapter to expand storage on a macbook? I was about to buy the 64gb usb at HN and saw this post.

    • +1

Pretty sure you'll need one of these as well. It's a shorter adaptor so it doesn't stick out much.

  • Any opinions on which is better, this or the PNY ones on Amazon?
    http://www.amazon.com/PNY-128GB-MicroSDXC-Memory-P-SDUX128U1…

  • Rep: cant see where to apply the discount code…
