Which Android Mobile for Parents?

Parents got back from an overseas trip and realised they left there mobile phone behind somewhere. So need to look at getting them a new one to replace it. Phone was an old Telstra Samsung flip phone so nothing special.

Thinking of getting them upgrading them to an Android smart phone of some sort rather than an iPhones which are just too expensive for there use.

Considering there are dozens of different brands and models to choose from. Many i've never heard of before. Just wondering what mobile phone would you recommend I get for them?

  • Something with long battery life, not too big, cheap and pretty drop resistant.

Ms Lumias are great if Windows - easiest to use.

If you still wanna go Android, had luck with the prepaid androids

  • There was this recently https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/231548 I got this http://www.harveynorman.com.au/telstra-alcatel-pixi-3-4-5-pr… from it for $29.

The deal is over now but FYI the $ was well spent. The phone does everything I need, just calls and txting for me. You would need a case and stylus for it. Unlocking cost a couple $.

I think this is the same model for $39 https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/optus-alca… but can't be sure.

    • the pixi is a simple phone and even at its standard price of $69 is a good deal. costs about $3 to unlock via ebay.

are your parents good with tech? i'd never consider giving either of my parents a smartphone, they'd hate it

  • One of the Chinadroids that have enormous 4000mAh or larger batteries..

    • Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 for the win. 3200mah. Only about $200Aus with express shipping, prob less. Got mine from Vickmall - ask them to flash it with the English rom and you will have the best dollar value phone going around.

      • I was thinking more of the lower price bracket phones like
        Homtom HT6 (6000mAH)

or if you want performance and can accept the higher price bracket
        Ulefone Power (6050mAH)
        Oukitel K100000 (10,0000mAH)

Something that will last days on one charge, like their old phones, but still has smartphone capability.
Cameras will still be crappy (but likely as good if not better than their previous phones)
        CPU will be snappy enough
        RAM will be sufficient
GPU is pretty much irrelevant cause they're not going to game.
Network performance will be fine on 3G

      • For a bit more the Redmi Note 3 has metal body (3 colour choices), fingerprint scanner and 3GB of RAM. Got mine for around $285 delivered and am very happy with it. No doubt that Redmi note 2 is terrific value if you don't want/need those extras. It also has removeable battery and can take an SD card, which the Redmi note 3 does not.

  • Still looking. All these brands I never heard of. Can stretch the budget to around $250. Preferably for something that can be purchased locally.

They looked at the Samsung j1 recently but from what I read its slow with limited memory and storage so not good value for money for that phone.

    • My suggestions were China phones…

Best Local Android phones locally are
Moto G or Moto E - Good Guys, DSE, Hardly Normal
ZTE Blade S6 - Officeworks is probably the best bang for buck

And the budget Carrier phones like the Alcatel Pixi suggested above are cool.

You should seriously consider a Windows Phone
