Nanna's Frozen Strawberries $5/1kg @ Woolworths (51.9% Off)

192

Hi All,

I've stocked up on these for my smoothies. Cheapest I've seen them.

I'll save you all the hassle of the 'poo berries' and 'AIDS' comments with the following deal caveats;

  • Patties recalled their frozen fruit from the "Nanna's" product line in early 2015 due to a possible hepatitis A contamination. While the cases of Hep A were epidemiologically linked to the Nanna's "Mixed Berries" product (grown in Chile and China and packed in China), further testing of all product lines did not reveal any contaminated samples.
  • These strawberries are imported from Chile.
  • If you are in a position to afford it, supporting Australian farmers is preferable.

If you are comfortable with the above, this deal is for you!

Love, Tafe

Need to stock it up! Thanks OP!

Aww don't take our fun away :-(
But the fact that they have such crappy QC that they allowed it to happen = avoid for me.

Local strawberries are in season & dirt cheap. It should be a cost isue, more likely a convenience & rotting issue.

The contaminated "poo berries" were from Chile as well as China. I am sure Nanna is Hep A free now but I am still a little hesitant.

    • Updated :)

      Still a little hepitant?

      • +2

Yes, I am still avoiding dirty nannas

I usually get coles brand many varieties including cranberries 500 grams $4 or 3 for $10….

    • This is what I get if there are no other specials about. This is cheaper!

      500g/$4 = $8/kg
      1500g/$10 = $6.66/kg

      This deal = $5/kg.

Coles berries are imported too fwiw.

  • It's an ok price but the normal price is a bit steep for frozen imports.

All confidence dented in the brand. Wouldn't eat them if they were free.

      Patties CEO has no care.

Patties Foods is distancing itself from last year's tainted berry scandal
Three people, the official told Mr Chaur, had been diagnosed with hepatitis A after they ate frozen berries manufactured under Patties' Nanna's brand.
Mr Chaur described as being "guilty until proven innocent". "From a financial markets perspective we have been kind of tarred with a particular incident"

      • What bothers me the most is all the story at the time was that it was very hard to test for Hep A etc so therefore surely it isn't surprising that the tests they did came back negative. They go on about all this testing they do now, yet surely these will also come back negative given it is hard to detect what they are looking for?

        • Unfortunately this is the world we live in now, and it's no longer just dirty hippies that have a problem with it. Greed is completely out of control and those involved are blind to it. No wonder there is a groundswell of support for people like Bernie Sanders.

    • +1

Up front with the caveats and you still neg me. That's cold.

      • +3

Not really negging you though, just the deal to be fair. Whether or not it justifies a neg is another question

Ozbargaining has become so ingrained in my psyche that it feels personal.

    God people are babies.

I continued to eat them throughout 2015. Couldn't care less, doubt anything will ever happen to anyone, especially after the 'scare' when it hit the news.

The butterfly effect of one Chinese man forgetting to wash his hands!

      • +3

I doubt it was from "one Chinese man forgetting to wash his hands"
It's common practice to pump raw sewage into waterways, then use the same water to irrigate crops in rural China (I was told in seevral rural towns not to enter the river because of the sewage). Some also use human & animal waste to fertise their crops (it's cheap & effective fertiliser). I bet one of these is the more likely cause.

But I suppose you can't trust first world countries either as USA (hello Costco), Europe & NZ have all had HepA incidents with frozen berries).

One mistake people make is assuming you don't have to wash frozen fruit & veg.

      Good for you…

you took the risk, you perceived it to be minimal, that is your choice.

The rest of us, would rather take the risk of catching Hep by the poo berries

ill pass on the hep B from nanna

  • I got some from the previous deal https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/230566. It is a good price but the taste and texture is not something I would purchase again,.

    • but the taste and texture is not something I would purchase again,.

      what about the smell ?

      • It tastes like fake strawberry syrup you get for ice cream toppings

        • -1

I'm actually impressed by the intense strawberry smell… I don't expect it from a frozen product for some reason.

        • +1

That's probably the fragrance of the urinal cake the Chinese farmer used…

Why trust this company after the way they acted and tried to conceal the facts.

They didn't do any quality control on their products that were sourced and packed in one of the dirtiest countries in the world. Not one did they not have anyone on the ground in that facility to check for the basics like washing hands but they didn't even take a few bags from each batch and run fast inexpensive tests to check they were ok.

The CEO doesn't care about the 31 people who fell sick with longterm illnesses, all he cares about is his profit margins and nothing has changed. Australian laws are weak and the CEO and other responsible parties should have faced criminal charges over their role in this.

This was only picked up AFTER people were getting sick not because of any proactive testing by the company.

I wouldn't touch anything from Nanna's or Creative Gourmet and anyone who does is putting their health at risk to save a few dollars.

The CEO even had the audacity to claim that China supplies a lot of food to Europe (which is utter rubbish) and their food production facilities are as hygienic as those in Australia which is further rubbish.

Its chief executive Steven Chaur said there was still no "firm association [of hepatitis A] with our recalled products".
"Many Chinese food production facilities also supply European and Japanese food markets, and they also have extremely strict hygiene and quality standards," he said in a press release.
"Despite public misconceptions, many Chinese food production facilities are at least as hygienic as those in Australia and operate to similar regulatory compliance regimes."

Hopefully there is legal action taken thanks to the stupid CEO. Too many executives get away with destroying company value and are rewarded with a golden handshake. Mr Abboud and Mr O'Brien are recent people who come to mind.

Looks like a few are poo pooing this deal.

    • +1

Looks like a few are poo pooing this deal.

Like the workers in the world class manufacturing plant who must have shat next to the berries and continued to sort them after wiping with their hand. I bet the CEO doesn't eat this rubbish, nothing but the finest fresh berries for him.

  • back in my day, nanna's frozen berries meant something completely different …

  • +1

Patties has sold the frozen fruit and frozen sweet parts of its business. Confidence in their products never returned and revenue down.

Lessons for all businesses in this.
