eneloops > microsd > ssds > Printers whats next??? my garage is almost full.

    • +5

How many micro sds does it take to fill a garage? :P

      • +8

        Depends on the capacities?

        • Yes some garages are quite small

      • +6

The real problem is the increased capacities - I'm not sure that my shelves can cope with the weight of a 128GB one once it starts filling up.

    • hallensteins clothing :)

    • A garden shed to store even more stuff

    • Buy a few, cuz the ink will cost $80

      • For real? I have one of these but the ink hasn't run out yet

      • Thanks OP got one.

The separate inks were $28 each at Kmart (don't buy!). I previously got the MG2560 (for around $18) and it is still going strong. The MG2460 uses the same cartridges as the MG2560 printer the 646 and 645. THESE ARE REFILLABLE. I have done so multiple times on my MG2560. I got the MG2460 as spare cartridges to refill.

If you want to know how to refill them refer to here:

I've got this printer it's basic but fantastic. I've been able to top up the ink with a refill kit from eBay - I got this one, but any will probably work. I also got these squeezy bottles make it easy to fill but the cartridge holders and drill bits are useless just use your own.

  • Soon the sales in printer ink will drop dramatically.

  • I often wonder if the overhead is worth canon etc selling things so cheap and making dirt cheap versions of it? Apart from having your brand recognised in all tiers, it feels so stupid and silly. You know for a fact that people probably wont even bother buying new ink for this junk and buy a new one and just print out and use up the ink and repeat. Making more trash.

    • yeh and they seem to make more than just 1 model of these low tier junk. i've seen at least 3-4 models all been sold for less than $30 previously

    • +3

Almost everything is designed to fail https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Planned_obsolescence thereby creating trash.

Despite the hysterical green movement's best efforts at making up a disaster in progress the fact is that the combined total area of USA landfills is about 35 square km. Given that this is the most wasteful nation on earth by a large margin pretty clearly we aren't going to run out of room to put trash anytime soon.

Curiously the only thing causing you to notice the obsolescence in this case is the fact that it's comparable to buying ink cartridges when it's so cheap. Not the fact that the device is designed to last 12 months.

Would you have noticed if the printer cost $99

      • Thanks for that link. It's a worthwhile article for everyone to read, and think about what we buy. France appears to be taking the lead with a miniumum 2 year warranty and creating legislation against designed limited life of products.

Here here. We need to support the garbage industry by buying more of these single use disposable printers.

It's not going to make an iota of difference whether we're a clean planet or a garbage planet when we explode.

      • Would you have noticed if the printer cost $99

If the cartridges are $5 each.

  • Specs appear to be almost identical to the MG2560 that was selling for $15 at BigW a couple of weeks ago

    Good deal!

  • The kmart product page you could argue is misleading, its definitely not affordable if you factor in the TCO of buying those overpriced cartridges and the teaspoon of ink you get. As for being the ideal all-in-one printer for home office, maybe if you print 2 pages a day.

Epson is kind of taking the right approach with their new eco tank printers, however they are way overpriced and if it wasn't for the "need to answer to shareholders" rather than "what's best for the planet" manufacturers would make large easily refillable ink tanks standard with the initial purchase price being only marginally more than current cartridge equivalents.. Least its a start.

Clearly at $12 its being sold at a loss with cost of ink making up for it… Checking officeworks prices, the black high capacity cartridge is ~$33 a pop, while the colour is only a mere $40 (yield of 400 pages - probably at 5% coverage)..

    </rant>

  • I might be needing a printer for kids school work. What is my best bet for a cheapass printer that wont ruin me for ink, with carts that can be refilled etc?
And yeah, I don't really want to buy 5 printers and throw them away one at a time as the ink becomes empty..

    • +3

Unfortunately the cheaper the printer, the more expensive the running costs.

You might be able to get a cheap colour laser with refillable carts if you shop around, and if you don't print often its a safer bet as toner doesn't clog up print heads and dry out. Laser printer manufacturers are however constantly trying to stop people use non-oem toners using chips on toners so its a cat and mouse game.

If you do regular printing, then a mid range printer (~$100) such as an epson might work, and then you can retrofit it with a CISS (continuous ink system) system from Rihac (~$130).. So while initial purchase price is high, the running costs are lower - and the more you print the more you save.

Each system has its pros and cons…

      • cheers, no wonder I haven't bothered with one for years.

      • Just be careful with CISS, you need constant flow of printing color documents or photos to avoid drying up the system.

      • During the big eBay sale last month, I picked up the ET-2500 from the new Epson Ecotank range, for about $350. It comes with it's own in-built CISS system. The printers came out last year in the Philippines where they are manufactured for India and developing countries, and now they brought out a range for US and Australia.

It comes with 70ml x 4 of ink and refills are about $16 each bottle. I like the fact it has a 2 year warranty, no worrying about any issues with an aftermarket kit, for only a littl bit extra cash. I would have got the ET-4550 with the slightly better printhead and other features but it wasn't available on eBay.

They also have a RIPS system for large offices that have IV bags full of ink. The ink costs about $150 a bag and then the printer is about $2000.

    • Not so much refilling, but as far as non-genuine replacement cartridges are concerned, Brother printers have been the cheapest way to go for several years. They were also one of the last hold-out companies as far as using chips in their ink cartridges, but that's recently changed and now Brother, along with Canon, Epson and HP, all use chipped cartridges.

However, chipped non-genuine Brother cartridges are still available cheaply on eBay (the seller 'kaamart' out of China is very reliable, regularly come up in searches as the cheapest, and their cartridges normally come individually sealed).

The last recommendation I made to someone was this printer(Dick Smith going into receivership means they've stopped selling on eBay but that model is probably available elsewhere) along with these cartridges, which for that model run at 15 for $29 delivered, or just under $2 each landed.

In other words, find a Brother printer you like and search on eBay for the cartridges.

(Replacement cartridges not being as environmentally responsible as refilling may also affect your decision).

    • I got a Fuji Xerox monochrome laser from office works for about $80 - p255 or something. Incredible - network enabled, does duplex, and most importantly the toner is $15 or something on eBay to do 10000 pages. I've used it for 3 years and still haven't used up the starter toner

    • If you live close to an Officeworks store, you could get by with a monochrome laser printer, and use Officeworks' "Print and Copy" service for the occasional colour page. An A4 page in colour costs $0.88:

It all depends on how many colour pages you need, how often, and how much convenience you want.

  • Thanks OP, ordered one to replace my shitty $39 HP. (Yes this one should be better, the HP paper jams literally every second print)

  • Just grabbed the last 2 at bankstown.

Second one was for the ink cartridges

    Thanks Op

    • last 2?

They must have restocked. There were about 10 left when I picked mine up

    • Just saw 6 left in display.

  • Does this take generic ebay cartridges? or even able to refilled easily? I have a HP Deskjet 1510 and it is useless for refills/compatibles.

  • How many pages will the ink cartridges (that comes with this printer) last for?

    • 180 at 5% coverage so 6 cents a page at $12

If yiu print with fast draft (like I do) you would probably get close to 300 pages

      • 6c per page is not cheap for BW but it is ok for colour.

        • thats at normal setting.

Draft or Fast Draft probably 2 - 3 cents per page

  • The canon mp230 is still $12 at office works, so try there if you miss out on this. I have no idea which is better.

    • That moment the USB cable is more expensive than the friggin printer!!!

  • +1

I can still remember buying Canon's first consumer inkjet, BJC 600, back in 1994. For around $900…. 360 x 360dpi!!! Wow this technology has dropped in price!

  • there was 30 left at Toombul this day/ http://www.kmart.com.au/store-detail/Toombul

  • What? Click and Collect charge is 3$? Since when Click and Collect comes with a charge?
And I cant even collect from my nearby Target store. Have to travel to one of the their nominated stores.

    • +2

You see where your problem is.. try 'kmart' stores .. for 'kmart' products…

  • Don't get why people are complaining about no cables It's $12 ! lol. Good find OP make sure to buy plenty for them spare ink cartridges.

  • For anyone who uses this printer, can it be used as a scanner without any cartridges installed.

  • What a deal! Thanks OP.

  • what a coincidence. After buying 2 printers, found a MP230 outside my block of units and it looked brand new.

Took it inside to test it and the cartridges are 2/3 full.

  • I need a scanner and this has 600x1200 dpi which is all I need to scan my old photos. I also need s printer too so here I come kmart….

    • If you have precious family photos etc, I'd recommend buying a dedicated scanner or borrowing one from a friend as the quality of scanners on these MFD's is no where as good as a dedicated one — of course it depends on your requirements but I've found the quality lacking for my needs with some lines skipped, colours inaccurate and timing issues.
