Excellent price for an add-on tent for those who has the 4wd awning attached to their car. Grabbed one for myself as an emergency shelter, as I have the OZtrail awning attached to my car.

Rays Outdoor sells for $229 (http://www.raysoutdoors.com.au/Product/OZtrail-Deluxe-RV-Ten…)
Gazebos Australia sells for $239 (http://www.gazebosaustralia.com.au/oztrail-rv-shade-awning-t…)
EBay cheapest $179

Not a proper full time tent because it doesnt have all side rain fly, but considering you already have a shade on top of the tent, as long as it doesn't rain like cats and dogs side ways, should be fine for a night or two.

Also to add, if you have the 4WD awning from OZTrail, its also good to add the awning extender for $50 (http://www.bcf.com.au/online-store/products/OZtrail-Deluxe-R…) which is again cheapest so far I have seen.

Edit: further bargain!!
Suggested by crf529 (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/230881#comment-3398949) possibly can come down to $80.50 using the coupon code TRUEBLUE20. This code is available in their website as well.
Thanks to crf529.

  • Any good deals on OZtrail Deluxe RV awning to go with the above tent?

    • Unfortunately no as I know of, i picked up the awning second hand from ebay for $100, but the new ones sell way pricey.

      • Thanks.
Do you remember seeing awning on sale recently in the past 12 months or so?

        • not this type of roll out awnings. But I just saw they have a Boab rear mounted awning which is cheap as well (http://www.bcf.com.au/online-store/products/Boab-Pitstop-Car…) - $50. Not similar to the OZTrail awning, but hey its cheap for casual usages.

Personally this is the one I heavily use for all my camping/bbq trips: (http://www.bcf.com.au/online-store/products/OZtrail-Deluxe-3…) $199. It is heavy (~20KG) but takes 3 mins to setup. For the size I have to put on my roof rack as well, but it is a must have item in my list.

for a 3x3 gazebo, Masters have this at $79 which is good value:

          @battler:
good price, however I strongly suggest to get a gazebo with strong frame and atleast 150D canopy to protect from heavy rain, sun and strong wind - all three pretty common in Australia. a good shade should last for 4/5 years I believe.

        • agree, depends on usage. go quality if usage is high and/or in the elements a bit.
          go cheap if occasional usage.
this Masters item is a bit lighter then my 3x3 gazebo.

My virgin post, please be soft.

Starting out by pitching a tent eh?

  • I'm also looking for a good awning, without the hefty price tag. It also needs to retract when pulled to rewind.
I know .. nice wish list without wanting to pay too much …

So can this attach directly on any 4wd? I have forester with roof racks

But this does not protect rain?

    • +7

      A forester isn't a 4wd :p

No it's one of those "lifestyle SUV's" whose owners are meant to be 20 somethings perpetually going for a surf or a bike ride when they aren't rolling through glorious, glorious very, very green landscapes to show how friendly to the earth a 2.5 ton car is and how amazing the car owners life is.

Well that's the advertising - the reality is usually an overweight person who spends a lot of their time sitting in traffic with screaming kids in the back :D.

If you ever go to the NSW snow fields just azbout every second car is a Forester

@robb6014: The AWD system handles awesome in slippery conditions :P

    • no retractable awning included, no frame included.
not a standalone tent, just a whole lot of nylon panels.

    • If you can fashion up a frame for the tent to attach to, it can be done.

  • top price for the tent!
    pity the awning isn't available

  • +1

Does it have to be an oztrail awning? Picture seems to suggest it is just Velcro tie downs?

    • +2

The awning you have needs to have a sail track at the car end and at the pole end. From looking at youtube videos, the tent comes with 2 sail track attachments that have clips on them to allow the top of the tent to be clipped in.

      • Awesome, thanks. I believe my black widow does indeed have tracks… Will check tonight.

      • Yes the tent comes with the sail track attachments

  • might be that any 2.5m x 2m would be ok
I was thinking the same thing

  • Thanks OP. Bought one. Now I have two months to buy Deluxe RV Awning before my next camping trip. Hopefully it comes on sale…

  • I so thought that thumbnail of the tent was a taser or some kind of gun.

  • The awning extender is a good price but note that it does not come with poles.

    • Opened up the awning extender to fit onto my Oztrail awning. At the sail rope end, there are 5 clips the same as that found on the awning tent. This way the extender becomes an awning if you fit the tent.

The extender also has sleeves at the pole end to slip in a pole to make that end rigid. If you had an LED light strip, I guess you can slip it in there for some diffused light. Not sure if it will be a fire hazard though.

I also have a Rhinorack awning extension and it is a proper canvas compared to this Oztrail. This Oztrail extender is much lighter weight but it allows me to roll the awning up with the extender attached. It's a tight fit but the zipper still closed. The Rhinorack extender was too thick to do this.

Anyone planning to use as full time tent - please note that this tent can only be used if you already have the frame support from the car awning or DIY frame (again it doesn't serve the purpose of ease of use). Plus it doesn't come with rain fly all around rather depend on the top shade for rain support.

I suggest any casual campers to use Coleman's instant UP 8/10 as they are amazing for the price, dead-easy to setup and reasonably weatherproof. We used one in a 5 day marathon showers and survived fully dry. the rain fly acts as an insulator as well. 1 person - 5 mins, 2 persons - 3 mins setup. You will save your marriage by keeping missus and the kids happy in quick setup.

I think the ones he's talking about are more like this style than the dome tents

        http://www.harveynorman.com.au/coleman-full-fly-instant-up-8…

personally i have a black wolf turbo tent, only issue with it is it doesn't fit in our x-trail's boot so we have a trailer …

        • Thanks. I know the one. But this seems incredibly good value for an instant up 4 person from a reputable brand?

      • Should be fine.
Just make sure u get a bigger size than the one you are counting, as for 4 ppl get the 6 pax tent.
The companies always pitch the idea of the maximum numbers when everybody is sleeping straight, flat-packed like ikea :-))

        • haha yeah i get you. We're shopping for two people so looking at the 4 person. Any idea why this is so much cheaper than the model you listed? Looking for a tent for our first time. So many bloody options..

        • @jesho: Hi [@jesho], I don't have much idea about the lakeside tent, but looks like it would be ok as an entry level tent.
The other tent - instant UP - seems expensive because of their pole construction, durability and the canopy material. as I said - we had been in 4 days continuous shower but no water dripped inside. Plus it has full height space, so you can walk around without bending. The seals and mesh quality also looked good to me.
I say, buy both, peach inside your home and see which one you like. You should get some immediate gut feelings. Anyway, you always have to try at home before you head for camping with a new tent.

Another thing we do - we keep a cheap tarp underneath the tent base to keep it clean and free from flowing cold from the ground. We just make sure the tarp is shorter in all the sides, else rain will catch them and water will clog underneath the tent.

Best of luck on your first camping trip, enjoy!!!

        • @zonaid: Mate you're a legend. Thank you so much for the advice! Really helpful. Can't wait to go camping!

    • Agree, Coleman instant up is VERY easy. No messing around with putting poles together or colour coding which goes where.

  • I bought the expensive but awesome Foxwing…

    Will this fit?

    • I doubt it will fit with foxwing, as this tent requires four corners support plus velcro straps to the front pole and side arms.

  • Great post OP. How hard/easy do you find it to remove the OZtrail Deluxe RV awning and put back on? or do you just drive around with the awning permanently attached to roof racks?

I'm keen to buy awning/tent/extender but my wife won't be keen to drive around with the awning attached except when we go camping.

    • Most people leave the awning attached - handy for beach trips, long drives etc too. There's not really much of a downside of leaving it on

    • +1

As I bought used from eBay, I didn't have original brackets - which I believe come standard as L-Brackets.
But I think the attachment mechanism would have been same - you have to have roof bar or basket where you connect the L bracket, I would say roof cross bar channel. You use T-Bolts pushed in the bar, than bracket and then bolt it.
For me I took the wrong decision from the beginning to save few bucks - and costed a great pain in the arse until i completed the attachment. But if I could use T-Bolt (4 pcs = $20 from SCA) and wing nuts, I don't think attaching/detaching would be that pain.

And as Oak pointed out, they are usually meant to attached full-time. the awning bag is somewhat waterproof, and being 9/10 kilo means not much difference to the car. Their primary goal is to give you shelter in case you haven't planned to stop before. I always see people keep it attached.

      • Cheers zonaid. Thanks for reply.

  • Ray's should do it at the same price. They are under the same group.
