I know that the brand is controversial, but I think that's a good price for a 55" TV, even if this is not so smart. I use chromecast and am looking for a 55" deal. Opinions?

I'm no defender of HN but this is clearly stated on their website, totally legal, and also pretty normal. DSE's free returns policy was abused by many leading to its demise. The fault is your wife's, not HN's.
If are happy with the picture than it is ok. As you stated, use a dongle to make a smart tv to make up for poor features of the low end tvs

That is right. And I paid $673 (after $25 off $150 purchase) discount. Attached a Sony sound bar, and its a great TV now. $845 looks a bit expensive for this TV.
This brand is also stocked at Costco. If it's even just a little bit more expensive at Costco I'd probably go there due to the "return anything anytime if you don't like it or it breaks, no questions asked" policy.
I remember paid 375 few yrs bk from HN for a tcl 55 fullhd. Still working great..

My Akai 55' from https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/229757 was only $599. I wonder how similar the picture quality is compared to the TCL.

I'm pretty happy with mine. Granted it's not 100hz smooth but I've been playing uncharted collection on PS4 and after some adjustments of the colours, it looks pretty good. Blacks could be deeper and there is a bit of colour banding with gradients, but hey, can't argue with the price. FTA TV looks bad regardless because it's SD and compressed.
I use a PS4 and Chromecast plus AV receiver to make it smart and sound great.
My TCL 65" is a fantastic TV so I'm biased toward liking this brand. IMHO it's better than all the brands except LG, Sony, Panasonic and Samsung.
My only thought it $865 isn't a "bargain" for a 55" TCL now, not a terrible price but not a "must buy it now whether i need it or not bargain"
The smart features, meh, used mine once or twice. Chromecast and nVidia SHIELD TV ever since.
TCL and Hisense are the best of the cheapy no-name brands. Not quite as good as pana/samsung/sony but not as bad as palsonic/akai/aldi/kogan

Just a reminder after the mrs bad Christmas purchase at HN (GoPro camera in sealed box with full receipt….so not a TV) but ……if this TV isn't right and you want to return it HN will tell ya to get stuffed that they don't have to return because you change your mind. I love HN!
