I think the looks are subjective. I used to own the bug eye WRX while ago and I think the new ones look good. And as I said it's one of my favorite cars and when you drive it, it doesn't matter what it looks like or how shit the navigation system is. It's an amazing car overall.

I was watching a video on YouTube by Subaru Japan and the engineers were saying the whole time that they use Porsche 911 as the benchmark when developing a sti. Of course it's never gonna be a 911 but that's way out of my reach.

    • And then I'd go.

The Porsche is a very very ugly car whose styling hasn't changed much in the last 30 years.
Secondhand Ferrari/Lambo look nicer if can't afford new one.

Seriously… vehicles are subjective and also most definitely cost prohibitive for the most people. Do you know the costs of owning a 2nd hand porsche vs a new STI? I'd guarantee you the costs of ownership each year is substantially different, with the STi being significantly cheaper to run and maintain.

    • +3

Why not a second hand Bugatti if we are speaking irrelevant bullshit?

  • +7

Congrats on the new car! Ignore the keyboard troll haters. I've had a few cars including 2 wrxs and the sti is a performance bargain - and not much sounds as good as a turbo boxer!

    • +5

Thanks mate. My old WRX used to have a custom exhaust and the rumble was amazing.

When test driving yesterday I made my wife make a video of the exhaust when starting the car and revving it so I can listen to it while I wait for the delivery. Lol.

Trolls on this website are amazing though.

I'm glad not being your neighbour. Otherwise i would consider taking your brakes off some night.

        • +1

WTF is wrong with you? Why would you threaten anyone like that? How about you work hard and get thing you want rather than getting jealous and threaten people.

        • -1

@All Blacks NZ: WTF is making noise in a neighbourhood worth jealous? This is not a threat but a kind reminder. Don't be a d!ck head to rouin the serenity of a living area.

        • @ITveteran:

Sounds like you need to move into a retirement village mate.

  • That is a great car but the fact they sell the same thing in Canada for 30k really bugs me

    • +1

Rubbish. Top spec STi in Canada is CAD 47000.

  • Accessories should be free and not included in discount

  • my experience in Melbourne with Subaru is they don't negotiate much. Other makes, 10% off is not too hard (got heaps off a ford), more for models not in demand. But many subaru models are in demand, and in Melbourne, 5 dealerships are owned by the same person, so you can ring 4 to get a good price and find little movement as they won't compete.

I am jealous, if I didn't want an auto I would be very tempted for a new sti @S56k. Just waiting for the levorg to come out. I wonder if you can fit a tow bar to an sti….

    • +1

Apparently you can't tow with WRX or sti. If you look at the towing figures on Subaru website it says n/a for both of them. I am not sure if it has anything to do with turbo? But then there are plenty of SUVs built for towing that have turbo engines….
      http://www.subaru.com.au/car-advice/knowing-your-towing-capa…

      • Turbo…..has nothing to do with towing.

      • Yeah, I am currently in a 3.6 Outback. Nice enough inside, tows, engine is fine, and modded with bigger roll bar and better tyres, handles ok. Just looking to modernize, and be good to be ble to have a tow ball bike rack at least, and auto, because I am lazy.

      • There was a few threads I found on this when we got our STI. Don't need to tow with it but was just curious. From what I remember there wasn't really any reason as to why you couldn't tow with a WRX other than they were purely "sports cars" now. Also read something about the frame of the car.
Could be completely wrong but that's what I remember reading :)

      • I was told (by Tony from URD) that towing heavy stuff chews through the clutch really quickly. He had a guy destroy a new clutch in 8 days, towing either a boat or a caravan. Light stuff like a couple of bikes shouldn't matter much.

Congrats on the purchase, i had a bugeye for years and loved it. Would love a new STI but priorities…. :-/

      • It's probably more the exhaust was in the way for the standard tow pack.

I have a tow bar on my BMW M135i which similarly says no tow rating and took some time to track down someone who could install. There will be tow bar companies around who will fit one for you assuming your exhaust isn't in the way. Mine has just enough room with the rear muffler.

If anything the AWD of the WRX would be great for towing particularly at slippery boat ramps where I worry about my ride sliding into the drink.

EDIT: and congrats on the car! You only live once.

  • I'd rather put it on a house deposit but to each there own, if it makes you happy go for it did you buy it outright or partially on a loan?

  • "full tank of gas" Hmm, they make WRX STis with factory fitted LPG now?

    • +1

All hail the bald eagle brotha!

    • Ha-ha. Fixed it for you.

      • +1

The car is a rocket and cheap for the level of performance you're getting. Enjoy.

  • +2

    Nice car, congrats!

Did you consider the standard WRX as difference is now closer than ever.

Both have a 6 speed gearbox and now 18inch wheels, the WRX now has the newer gen 2.0L engine with direct injection and twin scroll turbo.

I'm surprised the STI haven't switched over to the new 2.0L engine.

  • +4

If I was looking in that price range I think I'd have gone with the upcoming Focus RS, looks a promising vehicle. Not a fan on the current shape myself.

Congrats none the less on getting a good price.

    • Not sure who negged it, but it's a great suggestion.

More power and faster stock, it's suppose to be a great and enjoyable car to drive too.

    • +2

I would have gone a250 amg.

      • Whilst that is a very nice car, it's not really comparable in performace to either the RS or the STI. It's more GTI, ST territory.

        • Not even GTI territory… it's a soft car.

With the A250 you're paying for the badge, however Merc certainly know how to make a hot hatch in the A45.

I'm not really sure A250 and AMG should be in the same sentence.

        • Pretty sure the A250 isn't AMG. Well at least no badging. It's around 155kw same as the GTI. Hence my comparable performance comment. It should have some nice features though, haven't looked, but yeah about $10k more than the VW.

That A45 is a weapon and the RS3 looks to be quicker based on the 1/4 mile and 0-100kph times shown recently. Both quicker standard than a mildly tuned STI. Low/Mid 12s out of the box, very impressive.

        • @zqipz:

In Australia they call it the A250, in the UK they call it the A250 AMG. I think we both agree it shouldn't be called, nor worthy of the AMG badge.

Apart from the badge, the GTI is much better car overall.

        • Ah ok, good to know… yeah agreed not an 'AMG'

      • As would I, however the additional $20k doesn't really put it in the same conversation. As nice as it is!

        • A250 between $55k (<10kkms) and $65k (new).
A tiny bit more, but you could probably negotiate. Not $20k difference though, and definitely not in the same league with an STI as far as performance goes.

Unless you're referring to the A45 AMG which can be had used for about $66k. New is above $80k.

        • @zqipz: Should have been clear, was referring to the a45 amg :)

        • @zqipz:

merc could not pay me to take a A45 AMG of their hands. It has the worst 1st gear in an performance car i have ever driven. And i have driven a lot, apparently i hear that it got something to do with the ECU and that it softens/dulls the throttle curve in the low gears.

      • Opps a45, i know it was axx, told dad to buy one istead of the 3 series bmw they bought, which is ok, but the merc is much better in performance but less in luxury.

Should do high 11s with just an ecu and exhaust.

      • I would have gone M135i…

        oh wait i did.. :D

        • +1

No rear lsd is a deal breaker. The bmw auto is pretty awsome though. Much better then the e36 and e46 autos and feels faster to paddle shift then a dual clutch

        • @wholesaleturbos:

You can get an LSD installed by BMW as an genuine part if it was such a deal breaker.

    • +3

Wow, that Focus RS is badass in looks and performance!

  • +3

Is a full tank of gas really an 'extra'?

Would have thought it was more of a given.

    • +1

You'd be suprised. Wait until they unleash their ming moles towards the end of the sale.

    • The usual practice is to give enough fuel to drive to the servo next door.

      • All Subaru come with Free Tank of Fuel from Compliance

  • Good work all black, I am in the market to buy a car from a dealer. Can you please walk through your negotiating process? Thanks!

    • +1

Sure mate. Make sure you take someone with you. Do all the research before hand. You need to know everything you want to know before walking into the dealership. They must know that you have done your research and know what you are talking about, including pricing. Not only this makes an easy sale for them but they also know they can't bullshit you. It helps if you can tell them that there are other cars/options that you are looking at as well and will only buy once you are absolutely sure that you have the best price for the best car (I didn't have this luxury as I only wanted this car)

I am sure others will have different points as there is no 1 way to do this. But this worked for me.

On the day you wanna buy it, you must be prepared to shake on it if you get the price/car you wanted. Sales people will do anything for you if they know you are serious and will buy. Trust me most of them can tell if you are serious or a tire kicker.

Most importantly have fun, joke around, don't get angry or too serious. Most people will bend over backward for you if they like you.

I hope this was helpful and good luck.

  • +1

Very nice, it's a shame Subi haven't tweaked the FA for the new STI's yet. The best years are probably behind the old EJ25. This is the only reason I'd opt for the WRX over the STI currently, and save ~ $15k in the process. I love that 6spd gearbox, it's an amazing piece of machinery. I've had a couple WRX/STIs.

    • The new WRX is a great car. I test drove both and there was no way I was going to buy the WRX over sti after driving them. It's definitely my personal opinion but sti is a lot more car than WRX even with the old engine. WRX with CVT will be great for daily driver especially in start/stop traffic however sti is faster and more refined IMO.

  • -4

Should of got the an used SS mate. WRX STi has the old engine while WRX has the new engine technology which I would wait to be implemented in the STi.

    • +2

as opposed to the high tech in a pushrod v8?

      • It's a proven engine with plenty of power and good value for money with current fuel prices. SS or xr6 turbo, both are a good buy. When fuel rises again buy new FA STi :).

        • +4

And so is the EJ25: It's a proven engine with plenty of power and good value for money with current fuel prices. Cheaper than running a SS or xr6 turbo.
LoL. Asking someone to wait a few years for a newer engine and saying the engine is old… but recommending old tech engines. Contradict much?

    • +2

I came from NZ and wrxs, evos, skylines and Silvia have a huge following there. SS or HSV are fast cars but not really my cup of tea. I want a turbo to throw me back into my seat at 7000 RPM.

    • This is a damn stupid comment.

The two cars are in completely different classes, it's each to their own.

  • +1

I bought my MY16 WRX STI premium Lapis Blue for $57,685 from McGrath Subaru Liverpool NSW.

    Comes with:
    -Carpet Mats
    -Cargo Tray
    -Boot Lip Protector
    -Door Visors
    -Window Tinting

Picking it up this week :)

    • Congratulations mate, it's an amazing car.

My wife loved Lapis blue but I couldn't buy anything but the rally blue. lol

Well done on getting a good price too.

    • +5

That would be accurate if we were talking Commodores

    • +1

Lol. Funniest comment I've read all-day.

  • +1

Here in my garage with my new MY16 Subaru.. it's fun to dive in the outback.

8% is a terrible discount. Mercedes and BMW regularly offer in the region of 18%, 20 if you are good/lucky.

An 8% discount on a car that is essentially an evolution of a car that was released in the early 1990s (mechanically at least) is shocking.

while your crapping on the OP's deal, why not make up some other numbers

      • +1

Not made up, go and look at every price thread in the whirlpool automotive forums.

        • +3

well if we are using whirlpool, then apparently the OP got a good deal
          https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=2228239&…

but of course, that doesn't help you feel good by crapping on on the OP, so maybe we should just believe you

        • @SBOB: Well if the OP is already on that forum (clearly he is), then he already knows he got a good price. So this thread is essentially a humble brag as mentioned by many others.

        • +1

          @thorton82:

humble brag in your opinion, a FYI to those possibly looking to buy one.

And the reason why MB/BMW/AUDI can discount so much is due to the markups. Look at import market values of vehicles online and do some math. Local Euro dealers have significant markups. Japs do too, but not as big of a margin.

  • I would buy the new STI at this price but knowing Perth……. it probably be dented and dings within the week of ownership…..

  • +1

Hey man, congrats. I love the new Rexies, I've had my eye on one of the Premium models but I'll wait until I can get a second-hand model with $15K off.

    • You are a smart man. Wish I had that sort of self control.

      • It's not self-control so much as it is a funding problem… Trying to start a business and plan an overseas vacation aren't light on the wallet. Trust me, if I could justify the enormous loan I'd need to trade in my fridge on wheels and get one I would!

  • +2

Should have waited for the focus rs mate!

  • Yeah Focus RS v STI is a battle for the ages. I'm waiting for Chris Harris verdict.

I consider Audi & AMG up a segment even though Focus RS performance is getting close.
Standard WRX didn't impress me at all after my XR6 Turbo - Torque talks.
Wondering how long rex will take to go they way of the Evo.

  • stupid question, would dealer ever fill RON98 fuels for min.RON95 cars? >.>

    • You're lucky if they even put 95 on there as 91 won't damage the engine.

      • I would be pissed if they use 91 since petrol is so cheap these days. I use 98 in my 4 year old Renault.

  • It's amazing how some people are only able feel better about themselves when they're putting others down. Jealousy is a harsh mistress.

    • +1

      *Envy

Homer Simpson: "I'm not jealous, I'm envious. Jealousy is when you worry someone will take what you have. Envy is wanting what someone else has. What I feel is Envy."

      • +1

        I stand corrected. :D

  • +1

The only things I do not like about Subaru, the 6 month service intervals. And the alfoil thin sheet metal they use. Even the slightest carpark door dents stand out. Heavy rain could even cause damage. And yes I own a subaru.

    • Yeah 6 month service intervals are expensive and annoying (i.e. drop off/pick up, does Subaru give free loan cars?)

With advancement in synthetic oils these days, it's unnecessary but the dealers love it.

    • Most owners of subaru performance vehciles do DIY servicing, maybe going in max once very 2 years for all around inspection.

      • I think very few WRX and BRZ owners do DIY servicing.

Maybe the enthusiasts and ones who track their cars do DIY, but they would be in the minority.

    • Yeah and its not cheap either. I own a Renault and service intervals are 12 months. I will be getting it serviced at Subaru or authorized dealer for warranty purposes. Not looking forward to that expense.

      • Yeh and they got ya for five years too if you want to keep that extra warranty.

  • I paid $54400 with a few more accessories in May 2014 for the same car relatively (MY15)

    $56k isn't a great deal. (Sorry)
