    Negotiating a price is not a bargain, but thanks for sharing your purchase with us :)

    • +4

      Thanks. I have been reading the whirlpool forums and most people paid bit more than this so thought I share it if someone is currently looking to buy one. Mods can move it to forums or delete it?

    • +1

      negotiating…

      isn't that what you do for us all the time TA.

      :P

      • +1

        I think you know what I mean :)

  • -3

    More like an advert.

    • +47

      or a humble brag ;)

        • Hahaha great find

        • @Chickenleg: Funny thing is, I've just Googled to see what that car costs in the US or other countries and by accident have come across that post. lol

        • +1

          @AussieDaddy:

          never compare our prices against the US..its depressing what car you could get for the same money in the states

          Everytime I watch NFL/NBA streams, the commercials for car adverts make their cars look like bargains :)

        • @SBOB: I know. That's why I wanted to see the difference in prices so that I won't feel bad about my old, crappy car. :)

        • +5

          Looks like you caused him to delete his Reddit account and post

        • +4

          @MelBourne:

          Yeah I did. I had too much personal info on the Reddit account which I didn't realise. I should have deleted it anyway.

        • +4

          @MelBourne: I've unfortunately been informed of the stupid mistake that I had committed but it was too late then to remove the link as Chickenleg replied to my comment and I couldn't edit it. And I apologized to All Blacks NZ by the way.

        • @SBOB:

          never compare our prices against the US..its depressing…

          Sadly, so very true for so many products :(

          But then there's the excessive costs of being a patient in the US health system to balance it all up.

        • @SBOB: Look at the prices of cars in Singapore instead. You will feel a lot less depressed.

        • @pufffdragon: I have a friend who sold his used car for a $20k profit due to a rise in the COE price.. lol

    • +18

      People buys

      it appears people do's

    • +16

      I always wondered why people thought this. If you enjoy cars and can afford it, why not? I know several people with cars over $50k. Another couple with several cars over $500k. Personal choice I guess.
      Of course I know people with cars well under those amounts, nothing wrong with that either. Some people just aren't into cars.

      • +9

        I agree with you 100%. I work in the city and the amount of $100k plus European cars I see is insane. It all comes down to priorities. I want this car when I am yound and can have fun with it. I didn't wanna be a 50 year old having a mid life crisis and buying a Harley and a sports car.

        • +4

          bikes and sports cars fo lyfe yo!

          It doesn't matter if you're young or old… If you're a petrolhead… there is no such thing as a mid life crisis with vehicles. It's mostly non-motorheads that gets a sports car for their mid life crisis. If you're a true motorhead… you'd at least have one or a compromise of one if you can't afford a spare/project sitting in your garage.

        • +6

          @zeomega:

          I am gonna have to agree with you on this one. I recon the older I get and the more money I have, I am gonna spend more money on cars and keep buying faster cars. I love driving and there are so many amazing cars to drive.

        • +1

          @All Blacks NZ: I with you on the fun of driving a sporty car…but at a certain point one has to think that you cant do more than 60 in a 60 zone legally, which means the faster car costs more, is attracting more unnecessary attention, consuming more fuel and higher insurance. Basically getting you into trouble.

        • +1

          @gaurav1504:

          Which you can legally take to the track to have a fun time and push it to the limits. Keep the speed off the streets.

        • -1

          @All Blacks NZ:

          I'm the opposite, a few years ago I bought myself a nice, somewhat quick fuel guzzling car. I spent what was a fair bit of money to me back then for a car. If that car were written off, stolen out of the picture etc I'd get myself a cheap run around and spend probably 7k or so.

          Now days I'd rather invest the money, I don't care about having that nice penis extension of a car.

        • +1 @All Blacks NZ

          I'm a 27 y.o and have been a fan of cars since childhood. Even though I don't make enough to splurge on a car, I'd rather enjoy the younger years of my life in a good first car in Australia. While I do have an investment property overseas, I'm not really looking forward to a 20+ year mortgage.

          While investment properties, own house etc give you a stable financial future, I'd like to be able to finish up after a long day's work and drive home in an GTi or a Golf R and not a shitbox. That is the everyday happiness and satisfaction I'm after. Yes, buying a new car has instant depreciation and all that, but would you really worry about it once you've taken it up the bends of the great ocean road ?

          My folks and others have advised against taking a loan out for a 50k car but that brings me the greatest happiness. That may be a poor financial decision to some, but I wonder would I be able to enjoy better/faster cars when I'm 50?

        • +1

          @de9299:

          Exactly my thinking. A lot of people here are saying, the car is too expensive or put a deposit on the house etc. We are good at planning for our future but sometime forget to enjoy our present.

          I wanted to buy this car before I hit 30 which I have done with few months to spare. I do own my home and have an investment property. I bought this car as we sold an investment held overseas. I could have paid my mortgage down but when do I start enjoying my life and do the things I want to do. My wife is wonderful and fully supported me as she knows this means a lot to me. I worked really hard in my early 20s and now I can have fun.

        • -3

          @knk:

          That then defines you as a non-petrolhead. You'll never understand what an enthusiast does and your opinions of how one should spend their money is completely null and void.

          Can you understand why would 20 guys be running around a field trying to get a ball past a line? Or 1 man trying wack a ball with a stick as far as he can with as little wacking… all to put it into a small hole, rinse and repeat?

          Cool that you have an investment property and building your equity. So what are you going to do with all that cash when you're 70? Buy teenage years and youth? How about when you're dead? Buy another life? Money is meant to be spent, not frivolously and racking up debt, but not to live in misery either. Understand your means and live within it. I wouldn't buy anything i can't pay full cash with, other than a house of course, and even then, only 30% of my salary should go towards the mortgage.

          Everyone has a passion, yours definitely is not motoring, don't judge what others have choose for their hobby.

        • +1

          @zeomega:

          Funny you say that, it's all about priorities. I love cars, however I put my financials ahead of it. Your priorities just change with age, I"m also very pedantic and don't like driving a car I care about daily.

          Currently I own a cheap little hatch for a runaround which I use for work, an xr8 ute (bf), a torana which I'm restoring (very slowly lol) and an old gsx1100. But hey I'm not a petrolhead :).

        • @knk: Cars are usually marketed as weapons rather than penis extensions.

    • I always wondered why people go for hotter attractive women when you can get an ugly one for cheap

  • +3

    That's nearly how much I make in a year :(

    • And how much of it do you save?

      • +15

        Not even enough for a 90s wrx with light kms

        • haha

        • +1

          *high kms. Stupid autocorrect

        • +3

          Unmolested 90s wrxs in hero blue are starting to become collectors editions. You'll have to save for a bug eye instead, they go cheap

        • +4

          @btdroppedbox: But, those bug eyes :(

        • @btdroppedbox: Can't you just go to Parramatta and pull one out of the front of a pharmacy?

    • +14

      To be honest I don't make that much more but this is my dream car and always wanted it. I have saved a bit over the past few years and trust me this is not a rational purchase.

      • +11

        Yep and props to you, i'm very jealous. Pre toddler and mortgage days i had an Evo. Now i drive my wife's Corolla when i need it :(

        • +1

          Hey you can do a few cheap and fun mods to a corolla! And why not push it to its limits… at least you get to have fun within the reach of our 60kmh and 100 kmh speed limits.

          If you had a ferrari… I just dont know you would get to enjoy even a fraction of its potential.. unless you take it on a track or you go out to quiet rural roads..

        • +1

          I drive a boring toyota too. Its reliable, thats all. but i would like to be interesting again.

        • Same with a skyline… I even had a baby seat in the back of it until practicality became permanently inscribed in my parental vocabulary..

      • +1

        Crap. I tried to upvote you but clicked the negative… then it showed both +ve and -ve votes from me. My brain is toasted -_-

      • +2

        It's rational if it genuinely makes you happier than say dumping a deposit on a house would.

        Financially responsible? No, but we work a great portion of our lives and need to enjoy ourselves every now and then.

      • +6

        … if you're paying that much in tax, you're making somewhere around $140-$150K per annum.
        I highly doubt that the person who is making a total of $50K per annum is sympathetic to your position.

      • +10

        this thread is full of humble brags…

        with your earnings, I would hope some basic grammar skills would be handy

        • -5

          people tell me i have the worst customer skills ever. I don't know why though, isn't spitting on their food in their plate the best thing in the world? I mean c'mon it's my own spit, girls would be so lucky to even have a tinsy bit of it.

        • +2

          @spn: Your arrogance precedes you!

        • +1

          @spn:

          I don't know why though, isn't spitting on their food in their plate the best thing in the world?

          considering what you're talking, its likely the food will end up with e-coli…

        • @SBOB:
          lol yeah you are right, perhaps it is rude. Then I guess I'll be grateful I don't need customer service anyways.

  • If you can't get 10% discount off a new car price you are not trying hard enough.

    Standard discount offered (after a lot of hassle) is 5%. Negotiate harder and smarter and you can get it up to 10%. If you want more (eg. 15%) you will need to be buying a vehicle model that the dealer and/or supplier is having trouble moving.

    • We bought our Mazda 3 at a discount of 15% last year, it was a 4 month wait for the car to be built so they definitely didn't have trouble moving them :)

      • +2

        Well done. You did better than the odds.

      • Which variant of the mazda 3 did you buy and for how much?

        • Manual SP25 GT with mats and fuel for $28,500. We were more interested in getting it as cheap as we could rather than having extras thrown in.

        • @cala90: Thats a pretty good price. I am currently in the market for a mazda 3 SP25 GT in Auto so it gives me a rough idea as to how much to negotiate. If you dont mind me asking which dealership did you buy your car from?

        • @abhii101:

          Mate of mine who used to work for Mazda reckons there's more room to discount on a Manual as they tend to sell majority Autos these days in the SP25. A shame - driving manual will become a lost art.

        • +1

          @nafe: 10-15 years from now, there will be autonomous car on the road. Do you think those will run in manual??

          The change is happening in the right direction.

        • @abhii101: I got the 2014 SP25 Astina in Vic for 33.5k in March 2015(under 1000k's on the odo)…i reckon that was the bargain of the year, only to realise some in NSW negotiated 32.5 for the same.

        • +3

          @bargainaus:

          Not for those of us who enjoy the actual act of driving. It's inevitable, but doesn't mean I have to like it :)

    • This. 15% is achievable, but it's hard work (usually multiple trips to dealer and phone calls over several weeks.)

      Most new car dealerships run at a loss, but are carried by their respective service departments, so you'll usually find one that will go to down to almost cost to get a little closer to sales target.

      • +1

        We were lucky I think. We called a dealer on each side of the city (Melbourne) on our way down and said whoever called back with the best price we'd go to first. Two out of four called back with prices, one was 15% and the other around 10%. They even said they couldn't come close to the 15% the other dealer offered.

        Got to the dealer, around 30 minutes with trade value etc and the contracts were signed.

    • Out going triton and challengers are selling at 30% less than retail the year before. Bargains are to be had on outgoing models. But it does demonstrate how low a dealer can go

      • Is this for any leftover MN Tritons? Or MQs?

        • Mn is the outgoing triton

        • @btdroppedbox: Sorry, I thought I saw ads for the 2015 plated model MQ as outgoing, wasn't sure. Are there many MN's left?

        • +1

          @subywagon:
          There seems to be a few left, don't think they were very popular. The MQ seems to be on the mark though and 10k less than a hilux and better spec'd

        • @btdroppedbox: Where have you been seeing the MNs so cheap? How do you know about the 30% less? I'm asking because I'm thinking about buying an MN myself, and second hand GLXR's are still listed pretty close to the new prices!

        • @subywagon:
          Look at carsales under new and mn for a dealer close to you trying to offload them

        • @btdroppedbox: Are you looking to buy a Triton yourself?

        • +1

          @subywagon:
          Looking for a ute either navara, triton, hilux, Ranger/BT50

        • @btdroppedbox: I'm in the same boat. I'm leaning towards a Triton though as they seem pretty good for the price. I've currently got an old MK Triton and was surprised how good it goes off road.

        • @subywagon:
          The triton is priced very well. Taking into consideration hilux ranger triton dmax are all made in Thailand around the same area by ladyboys anyway so same same Tuk tuk technology

        • @btdroppedbox: It's Japanese tech with Thai slave labour. I think the Hilux is over rated these days and you're mostly paying for the badge. I do like the Ranger's, but I think I could get a pretty good rig set up with the money saved (and then spent on gear) for a Triton.

        • @subywagon:
          I have the Kun26 hilux and ML triton working side by side, both are very good work horses. The only edge hilux has is spare parts a plenty at the wrecking yard. Cant go wrong with either but I do agree Toyotas are overpriced, overrated. what do you have in mind for a rig?

  • Would the MSRP $41490 for a Subaru Outback 2.5 Premium 2016 be accurate?

    http://www.carshowroom.com.au/showrooms/subaru/outback

    Read somewhere another 5-6% off MSRP can be bargined which brings it down to about $39k

    Anyone paid a better price than $39 drive away?

    Anyone bought the MY15 version?

    • That price should be very easy to achieve mate now we're in 2016. You could probably knock it down further. Check a few Subaru forums and see what other people paid.

    • I don't know about the price for this specific car however they sold a few of them brand new while I was waiting for test drives etc. I got there early yesterday and left around 2pm and by then almost all of them had a sold sticker on them. It's a popular car. Good luck.

    • +1

      I have an outback 2015 premium when it was first released what I got and I don't know if it was a great deal.. I just needed the car at the time.

      Tips - Don't get it from Subaru Sutton Chullora ( if you are in Sydney ), I had the **** expererience with the Sales Manager there, yep, THE SALES MANAGER not the salesmen. It was clear he has been working too long and didn't give a **** about haggling customers.

      So ended up at Liverpool McGrath ( Sydney )

      Basically I got the 2.5 Premium 2015 with all the bells and whistles.. the tow bar, reverse sensors, mats, boot liner..etc..
      I got it $44500 drive away. ( which was about 6% off what the total cost of everything ) plus I got my 6 months service free. ( $299 value )

      • Interesting to see different dealership experiences from different people.
        I myself found it the other way round in regards to McGrath vs Suttons

        • i am looking to get the Outback 2.5 premium. howmuch did u get it at Suttons chullora? did u get any accessories?

          or was this at suttons Rosebery?

        • +1

          @PPrem:
          i bought an my16 wrx premium for 46k with a few accessories from Suttons Chullora

        • @Hiroko:
          Thanks, i am after an outback 2.5 Premium. I was offered $44,500 with tint and tow bar, cargo tray, mat etc (Premium Plus Pack). was trying to find out if that was a good deal or not.

        • @PPrem:
          Outbacks are great cars
          Goodluck with the purchase
          $44,500 doesnt sound too bad
          i reckon theres at least another $1000
          movement though.
          id try walk into a dealership with deposit money
          attached to an offer a little below what youre willing to pay and go from there.

    • If the invoice price for the MY16 Outback 2.5l Premium is $26k US ($37k AUD) would this be an approximate price to negotiate towards? Thus, mention $34k as starting price and work my way towards $37? Thanks.

    • +17

      Mate do you work for Subaru or what? If you're not negotiating the price of a new car, you're doing it wrong.

      • This is probably a person who payed full price for their car and now insists on claiming that this is a virtuous behaviour rather than a dumb behaviour that allowed them to be taken for a ride. Odds are it's a woman: they usually pay more for cars.

        No one likes feeling stupid.

    • +12

      Ha-ha. Calm down mate. Its just a car and this is just an internet forum.

      I knew more about the car than the people selling it to me. Trust me when I say it is my dream car.

      But thanks of your thoughts anyway.

    • +5

      Not sure what the point of this post was…. who pays RRP for a car?

      • +7

        A car salesman's dream customer.

      • Mimbula did? Or perhaps (s)he paid more than RRP since RRP is so secret?

    • +4

      lol, this was one of the stupidest posts I have ever read

    • Subaru's are not renowned for their resale value you dumb berk.
