Choosing a VPN is so hard!

Is PIA the most popular choice for p2p anonymity?

    • +5

Not sure about it in terms of p2p anonymity but in terms of Ozb users PIA is up there as one of the best.

I've been using them for about 12 months. I lose less than 5% of my speed while using it.

Also have an Android app if need be.

      Highly recommended.

      • +1

        5% of what speed though?

I lose more than half of my speed 20-30mbps vs 93 without the vpn.

I would warn anyone with NBN level speeds to beware of any VPN as your speeds will often get crippled.

        • +1

Haha yeah my speeds are only 12mbps.

I'd happily take 20-30 any day of the week.

  • I don't know much about VPN.

I will go to China end of this month. Last time I was there I can't use Facebook and many websites.

Which VPN is good to use in China?

    Thanks guys.

    • how long are you there for? (if it's only for a few weeks then maybe utilise a few of the 7 day trials offered.
Most should work, but the Chinese govt do like to have the occasional crackdown & have started blocked certain protocols. Maybe one of the Hong Kong based VPN providers might be the most consistant. You'll probably have more success with L2TP or SSTP protocols.

Here's an article which reckons ExpressVPN is your best choice,
      https://greycoder.com/best-vpn-china/

    • I just got back from China (Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou) and had two paid VPN services - PIA and ExpressVPN. I used the Android apps for both VPNs.

With PIA, I couldn't connect to any server most of the time. Even when it did connect, there wasn't any data traffic.
With ExpressVPN, I had around a 50/50 chance of connecting using China Mobile and some WiFi networks. From my experience, I wouldn't call it anything close to reliable, as they did on the greycoder site.

      • Vyper VPN features Chameleon, a technology useful to conceal VPN traffic. Meant to be effective behind the great firewall.

    • Just returned from China, and used Privatoria. Very impressed with the service. Was connecting to their UK server, and had no issues. There were dropouts when connected through patchy hotel Wifi but over Unicom Mobile, I had practically no issues. I can highly recommend them.

  • How is nbn speeds on this? Max 100mbit connection?

    • Expect 30mbit max on the aussie servers.

  • I have been using PIA for about 6 months now… My torrent speeds actually increased :D I suspect the ISP is throttling some torrent traffic at least.

I have used the PROXY(in uTorrent) and VPN for extra security

  • Has anyone tried PureVPN? Choice rated it as number 1. I've heard some pretty mixed reviews about PIA…

    • +1

I use it and have found it to be great. No problems at all, fast speeds and great support.

      • Thanks. Have you tried any other VPN's?

        • Apart from a free trial here and there, no.
I signed up when they had 2 for 1 year sale.
I haven't felt the need to sign to another as I'm happy with it.

PIA are very good, but their iOS app is really terrible. Doesn't connect about half the time

  • +1

Currently using PIA (in middle of 3months currently but have used it on and off 3 months before that). Seems a good deal. For me its ideal. Torrent speeds via the Netherlands server maxes the connection here (only 5MB but thats a line issue….). Downspeeds are pretty constant as long as torrents are well seeded (usually are on the private trackers i use). No logs. Havent seen a drop in connection yet (they offer a free sock5 proxy if needed - some say better to use than not)). Have tried a few other vpns but i find this meets my needs (has a lot of servers - can use torrents , good speeds ) and OZB's seem to love it.

  • I got PIA because of a previous OZbargain deal about 6 months ago, and it's great for general torrenting and Netflix. Can't complain about speed either.

  • +2

It is $41.5 from google play. Even cheaper if you have the $5 telstra starter kit from last promo

    • Seems like it's $41 USD? (from google play). I tried to pay but didn't work.

  • +1

if you buy this in-app on Android, it shows up AUS $41.48/year, cheaper than OP.
You can use telstra credit as well

svsvk beat me to it, ignore my post

  • Hi There, Im a 30 years plus person who does downloads and suft the net everynow and then but i dont know anything about VPN, what do you use this for? sorry for my ignorance :P is this somethiong to do with spped or downloads?

    regards

    • PIA encrypts your connection and data with high level cryptographic protocols such as OpenVPN or IPsec. These state of the art technologies keep your data safe, secure and private, regardless of where you connect from.
So, VPNs basically hide where you connect from, your IP etc. Its much more deeper than this. Have a read on VPNs.

      • im doing it right now and i think im getting it, is just dont know if i need one or not. dont use much internet (only Ozbargain) and a few sites put nothing the will risk my security (I think) and not planning to go China anytime soon lol, anyway im gonna keep reading :P Thanks for the info by the way.

        • +1

Doesn't sound like you need it really unless you are worried about the security of your data.

People mainly use it for the following:

          • Watching US Netflix. US Netflix has a much broader range of movies and shows than AU netflix and as long as Netflix thinks you are from the US, you will be able to watch their catalogue.

          • Torrents / Pirating. Using a VPN supposedly masks your internet activity so it is used by people who want to pirate media but lower the risk of being identified / sued by a media organisation.

Obviously it can be used for many other reasons… However Id wager those are the top 2!

  • any idea when this deal gonna expire ?

  • Deal seems to have finished

    • PIA yes, seems expired…Torguard still has the offer..
