here's a guide with pictures buy your SIM at the airports in Japan and save your money

    http://www.japantimes.co.jp/news/2015/07/24/business/tech/z-…

    • +1

How is that saving money when it costs more?

And why would you buy it from a vending machine when there are are stores in the airports which sell them for cheaper?

    • +1

It is the only industrial nation (besides S. Korea) without 2G GSM coverage and doesn’t allow visitors to buy voice SIM cards by law. However, for data on 3G or 4G/LTE on a data-only SIM card, you are free to go.

      Japan SIM card wiki

      • Use of electronic devices that transmit (mobile, Bluetooth, etc) is technically illegal in Japan, unless approved! You would really have to have pissed someone off for that Act to be enforced.

There's effectively no SMS used in Japan or there wasn't any in the past - they went straight to email on their phones so long ago. I can't SMS my Japanese friends. GSM cover is fairly recent, with 4G. Without that cover, no one would buy an iPhone or other smart phone we are used to.

Yes - no pre-paid voice service under the 2006 “Mobile Phone Improper Use Prevention Act” (which does not cover data SIMs). It is said to be to stop organised crime. If you are a foreigner staying for a while, you can get post-paid voice service with the right paperwork - "alien registration".

Free WiFi in the streets etc is increasing. But that's very recent development to help tourists. I've seen mystified Foreigners looking at their phones & shaking their head - "Where's the free WiFi??". Cafes provide WiFi to phone service subscribers, although I know little about it. Check before you go, as some services needed to be set up outside Japan. Some hotels still only have an Ethernet cable in the room :(

    • Interesting & possibly useful for people in a rush, BUT more expensive!

NTT Communications said the SIM cards are priced at ¥3,450 for one week and ¥4,950 for two weeks. Both types offer a maximum download speed of 150 megabits per second and 50 Mbps as an upload speed. If the data amount exceeds 100 MB a day, the network speed will slow down. Japan Times

So 14d costs $60.73 plus any bank & exchange fees. 4G use is half this deal. Only at Narita airport at the moment :(

So dearer & possibly slower than here at $52 delivered!! Better to arrive with SIM in phone.

i am in NZ atm using spark sim bought from them 2 wks ago. the spark spot is good on major town centres. recommend! btw, I received the sim card in one day after ordering in Sydney.

    • Glad it is working well for you :)

      • and just received amessage from spark to.say that I got extra 500m of bonus😃

  • Do you do longer than 14day Sim lets say 22day?

    • No not at the moment. Customers at the moment get a combination for something like that, so a 14 day and a 7 day to make 21 days total.

      • Hi Rep,

Is there any way to cancel an order that has not shipped yet? I didn't check the activation date and will be arriving in Japan after the 14th of Feb :/

        • Hi glengood, you can either cancel it or we can honour the deal and ship out when the next batch comes in straight away for you (should be late January or early Fenruary). Up to you!

        • @TravelSIMSDirect:

          Hi Rep,
A few of my mates and I are travelling to Japan on the 17th of Feb, will there be a similar deal for your next batch of Docomo sims ?

        • @InoStuff: Hi InoStuff, can I ask for how long you will be travelling to Japan for?

        • @TravelSIMSDirect:

17th to the 29th of Feb (12 days)

        • @InoStuff: I beleive these cards will officially end on the 28th of Feb. So if you can go without the internet on the last day these cards will be alright for you! We say Feb 14 so everyone gets 14 days before they expire on the 28th of Feb!

These guys are better for Japan IMO: http://www.ebay.com.au/usr/yokososim-au

    8 day/3gb $35
    15 day/3.5gb $40
    31 day/4gb $45
    90 day/5gb $55

all have unlimited at 256kb/s after the quota is used up. Free postage too, same network as this deal.

I have bought a bunch of them for my upcoming trip.

    • Has anyone used simcards by this vendor before?
It does look like the best deal out there for data only sim cards pre-purchases for Japan….

      • i've ordered the 31 days one. hoping it is ok! there is the b mobile ones but only last 14 days… that's my backup if these pre orders don't work upon arrival into japan. Fingers crossed though as I made the effort of preordering them - to be received this week. So hopefully i can hit Haneda airport ground running! :)

  • When does the NZ sim need to be activated?

    • The New Zealand sims have no set date but anytime before end of May 2016 for now would be appropriate.

  • You can buy bmobile unlimited sim about 30 dollars in japan
    Valid for 14 days

I used your SIMS in Japan and Thailand a few months ago, thank you they worked flawlessly. You also provided fast delivery, so thanks again and highly recommended. Both great networks.

Not yours but boy the networks in the Philippines are very poor, but that's another subject.

The docomo sim I bought from you guys was so worth it. Excellent coverage, I rarely found a place where I lost coverage and great speeds too. Thanks op!

  • Hi there, Ive been waiting for this deal for a while.. I'm travelling to Japan tomorrow evening.. What's my best option to get one of these sim cards? Is there an option to receive it in Japan?

    Thanks.

    • It is going to be extremely hard to get it to you in time in that instance mate. You can order international postage but express international can take 2-7 business days. Not sure if you will be put in one place long enough for that variance.

  • For full details on this Spark NZ card please visit: http://www.vodafone.co.nz/prepay/

You might want to change "Spark" to "Vodafone" in that sentence. :)

FWIW, I picked up a couple of Spark SIM's from a previous deal (thanks!), and just got back from NZ yesterday. I also had Telstra and Vodafone (AU) SIM's roaming, so I was able to compare the Spark, Vodafone (NZ) and 2Degrees coverage as we travelled. Travelling from Auckland to Wellington (by train) to Picton (by ferry) to Christchurch (by train) then to Greymouth (by train), plus a couple of day trips out of Auckland, I'd say that Spark and Vodafone were about on par in those areas. If one had coverage, then the other usually did too, but sometimes in the fringe areas (and there's lots of those), one would be present, but the other wouldn't. Of course, YMMV.

TLDR: Just go with whichever deal looks best at the time. :)

    • Changes, thanks for that and the feedback!

I bought one of these before i went to Japan in November last year and it arrived quite quickly. Very helpful email support too. Don't expect to get 4G very often as i think locals get priority, well that's what i found as I only was on 4G rarely. The coverage area is fantastic and the only times i didn't have a connection was when the Shinkansen/bus went through tunnels.

  • +1

I also had the Japan sim in November last year and it was invaluable.I had a few minor issues with the set up and the TSD guys were very quick to respond with troubleshooting advice and a resolution. I will look to them again when I go to Japan again next year.
The 4G coverage was sketchy on my Galaxy S5 (OPTUS) and was the cause of my issues. By limiting my phone to 3G only I didn't lose connection once. The quality of the service was good enough for Skype calls and I used it to make free 1800 calls to Australia for banking support etc.
Very happy with TSD service and glad to see them still up and running.

Why not buy it online from here - http://www.bmobile.ne.jp/english/index.html
14 days unlimited on the Docomo network ~ 29$ delivered directly to your hotel.
Just choose the day of delivery and away you go.
I've used it last time I went to Japan in 2014 - Great speed and no issues at all.

  • Hi rep, any deals on sims with NZ's Spark Network? I heard the reception is better with Spark vs Vodafone.

    • Only have a couple more left. Please order the Vodafone sims and enter your OzB username and mention you want a Spark sim and we will take care of the rest :)

      • Thanks for the quick reply. Just to clarify - this is the deal posted on: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/225780? Will definitely get one if it's still valid in April 2016. I will be traveling around the country, and need a reliable reception. Cheers

        • Thats the one! :)

        • Thanks! Bought one (order no: 4089)

    • I heard the reception is better with Spark vs Vodafone.

So had I, but see my earlier comments.

  • For those who may not be travelling and staying at hotels (I.e. using air bnb etc) - what's the best way to obtain a data sim when arriving in tokyo (or any other major city like kyoto, osaka etc depending whre you fly in)?

IS the airport the best place/most friendly for tourists as I assume to activate the sim card do you need some help? Or are they in english instructions/voice activation? Or can you easily grab one from a local convenience store around where you're staying?

I've been curious but why is voice calls not permitted? I mean i Only need data for maps and whatsapp/contacting loved ones, all of which can be called via viber or whatsapp anyway… but just curious?

And what is the local 'telstra/optus' equivalent there? As i'm going to travel to a few cities via rail , and perhaps up to Hakuba, so something that has good reception around the country would be great. Recommendations would be appreciated… last time i went without sim card and i found the 'free wifi' was alot harder to access to in stores without being a customer or subscribing as amember even in places like starbucks… wasn't easy at all :(

    • Best way is to walk into a COMST store I found. They are in a few places in Tokyo. Good pricing options. Setup requires WiFi, but there's plenty of free hotspots around.

  • I found Docomo the best network for 4G using my iPhone 6s. SoftBank is the other major network for 4G. The speeds are very fast and I had no issue in central Tokyo.

I got my prepaid SIM from BIC Camera Store which is all over Japan in major cities (think JB meets Harvey Norman). All SIMs are data only and expensive by Oz comparison - the longest expiry you can get is 6 months/5GB ($200) however most are 14-30 days with 1-5GB of data starting at $20. I had to download a funky APN profile to get my iPhone connected to the network so not as simple as Oz either in my experience. At the airport (Haneda) I found hardly any choice at all whereas at BIC Camera they had several networks and options.

Certainly the more unique experience when it comes to prepaid!

  • Hi I ordered a Docomo 14 day SIM on Monday 10 January 2016 and was just wondering if you have dispatched anything yet.

    Thanks.

  • Hi Rep,
This deal sounded great except for the activation date (14th Feb). I will be going for 2 weeks from the mid April which is why I didn't purchase the great deal. But after reading through the comments, it seems like you could make exceptions!

I'm wondering if you can still do the same deal for me? I'm interested in: DoCoMo 14 Day Unlimited Data Card: Normally $65, Now $52

    Thanks for any help.

    • Hi mate, for dates not long after we can accomodate now. You can order now and if we don't have stock for your date we usually keep you on an preorder list and send out once an appropriate sim for your dates are in. Usually get it 3-4 weeks before departure at least!

  • Hi Rep,
Going to need to buy a sim shortly for Japan (travel at the end of march) - Going to have a leap year sale @ the end of Feb?! :D

    • +1

Hey! Haha leap year sale, I like that. Will likely have a sale in about a week (around the 29th!)

      • Beautiful - Ill keep my eyes peeled!
