Expiry Date and Due Date

There are millions of expiry dates in our lives: gift cards, rego, insurnace, groceries, phone credits, etc. But I am confused when it actually expires. Does consumer laws have any definition?

My understanding is both expiry date and due date are inclusive. You can use the credit until the last second of the exipry date and it is fine to as long the the recipient receives the funds before last second on the due date.

However recent experience with Skype credit says differently. On the card it say credit expires in 12 months from purchase date and the expiry field has only year and month. I was told that the credit was expired on the 370th day since purchase although it was in the same month. Anyway Skype creidted my account on once off good will.

And what do you think?

Expiry/due date should be the LAST second of the date/month

Expiry/due date should be the FIRST second of the date/month

Expiry/due date is at the merchant's discretion

  • if it says expires 12 months from date of purchase then it is seems unambiguous to me.

So, if you purchased a card with a 12 months expiry anytime on January 8th 2016, you'd expect it to be usable until midnight on January 7th, 2017?
