I feel like all of the plants stores and garden nurseries around me are closing down. Either people's yards were ruined by the drought years ago and they don't want to (or have the money to) fix it, or people are just sick of the upkeep that a nice garden requires. That and the fact that we insist on continuously building up in the form of apartments as everyone wants to live in the city. Ain't no room for no garden up in there!

My parents run a small nursery and the droughts hit them fairly hard (although no govt bailout packages like there were for farmers..). People stopped buying plants because they weren't allowed to water them.

Because the restrictions (in NSW at least) were held on to WAY too long, it simply got people out of the habit of wanting to do any gardening.

The above reason is a good one, but their markets were always country areas rather than cities.

      • Sorry to hear that. I'm in total agreeance where the restrictions time periods are concerned. It's like the govt wanted to fill up the reservoirs to such an extent that we'd be safe for a while if a severe drought occurred again in the near future….only problem is the people they were screwing over in the process (like your parents!). Interesting note about the bailout packages, have to say a bit disappointing that there wasn't one for nursery owners seeing as, like farmers, water is vital for the business to operate. If anything, nursery owners were more affected seeing as both the seller and the buyer needed water which compounds the issue two-fold; whereas if a farmer waters his crops and I buy a food item from a supermarket, I obviously don't need to water it as well.

        • well they were lucky for a few reasons.

          1. They had recently started to diversify stock. Bringing in things like big metal butterflies and shit you put in your garden. Also diversifying their range to include succulents and other low water plants
          2. They weren't that far from retirement. If they were my age now, they'd probably have closed up.

Is it hard because of competition like bunnings and masters?

  • great bargains! thanks op

quite a bit of stock left. thinking about going back tommorrow

  • Sadly Live in Queensland, I assume you do not ship?

  • Why did I read the description in Frank Walkers voice?

  • This was a great sale, Mum and I picked up a bunch of roses, hedges, plants and an established 2M Japanese maple for $65 total.

O.P - have you closed your doors now?
