Merbau Decking 90x19mm $3.98/Lm @ Bunnings

350

Not sure how the prices are down south, but up North this is a bargain (we rarely see this in the $4 range, let alone the high $3)

Could try to price beat at Masters, but they may deny it because the 'brand' is not the same (Specrite)

Looks like their normal price to me?

    • Bunnings never show the before and after price.

But I'm guessing it's cheaper as it's the same price as the 70 x 19

It is usually in the low $5. It sometimes goes on special in the mid to high $4 range. I slowly started a deck about 8 months ago and have been on the lookout for cheap hardwood decking. Sucks that I already bought :(

I slowly started a deck about 8 months ago

and you still haven't finished ? It must be a very big deck… (no offence to Kiwis intended)

masters wont match. Its all talk when it comes to matching.

    • Matching works very well for items of the same brand.

That's a great price. From memory when i did my side fence with merbau about six years ago, paid a very similar price. And im sure timber prices went up in the intervening years. Mmm, more home projects..lol

Do they guarantee it's from a Commercial Plantation, not Malaysian Rainforest?

    • Luckily its not from a Australian Rainforest….

      • Because raping a foreign country's resource is perfectly ok.

        • I guess its better than them raping our cows. lol.

Good price but my wife sez deck is big enough.

    • Came for the deck jokes. Left disappointed

If you are in melbourne, you can hit up this mob, depending on what lengths, they can be cheaper:

    Merbau Decking 90 x 19 Set Length 1.5 - $3.50/lm
    http://pyfencingsupplies.com.au/viewProduct.aspx?pid=590

    Their Merbau Decking 90 x 19 Set Length 2.4s is $4.40/lm
    http://pyfencingsupplies.com.au/viewProduct.aspx?pid=589

    • I suppose 1.5m is fine if you're building a path.

Generally the longer the better, less work and looks better.

    • shorts are cheaper at most independent stores.

$4.60 is their price in comparison to this deal

  • I am looking for some decking board recently. So i know some story about the price. The original price is $4.95 LM in Bunning. Master has 15% off (down to $4.90 X 0.85 = $4.17) in same size merbau decking (but finished yesterday). I believe Bunnings' $3.98 is beat with master promotion.

Anyway, I ordered my decking board from master. In SA, I got quotes from softwood. it is about $5.1 LM.

That's a very good price. Got about the same price for Merbau Screening last year, which I used for screening. This stuff is much more rigid.

  • Im a n00bie with decking and other home improvement.

Can this also be used on an apartment balcony?
I have 4m wide x 2m long balcony with really shitty cheap tiles.

    • You'd need to elevate it off the tiles otherwise moisture will build up underneath and it will rot (along with dirt etc). Probably best to create it so it sits snug and doesn't move but could be removed in the future to either clean underneath or move. Would be relatively simple project if you had the tools.

Check out a few things like this and assess if you've got the skills to do it. If not, it probably isn't hugely expensive to pay someone else if you really hate your tiles that much.
      http://www.familyhandyman.com/patio/how-to-build-a-deck-over…

      • Is it safer to put better tiles over it instead of wood decking (for rotting)
My balcony is known to sometimes flood a little with heavy rain as the drain isn't very efficient.

        • I'd ask body Corp to fix the drain. If your place floods after putting down timber they may blame you.

Even if they approve decking, don't use Merbau as it leeches tannins and will stain your balcony and also the balcony below yours.

        • @JB1: ok thanks for the heads up, i'll give this one a pass then

    • With the right supports this would be fine.

  • How does this decking handle over time? Does it fade in the sun or warp in water? Does it need to be oiled/painted every year?

Was looking at this or composite, which costs a lot more but seems to be maintenance free.

Maintaining it seems like a lot of work! Sweep, scrub/wash, oil and stain.

    https://m.masters.com.au/diy-projects-ideas/garden-outdoor-l…

    • I have a merbau deck. I liked it last year and still going well. Just get the more expensive decking oil and it lasts a lot longer than the cheap stuff!

    • I used the very same to build duck boards over a garden bed in the dog's compound about three years ago. Replacing treated pine which was rubbish. The merbau has performed very well, has not twisted, warped or shrunk, faded to grey after about 18 months and has never been treated in any way. Because it drains well it is not affected by the weather. No rot or fraying at the edges or ends, looks like it will last indefinitely.. :-) .. !!

    • Merbau is fairly unique actually, you can leave it unstained / grey and it will still last for up to 50 years. A very, very tough hard wood.

But hey, if you're lazy and want a deck that looks good all the time, get the composite.

    • The composite is fantastic as there's no bowing, no warping, no sanding, no staining. And even though your friends will tell you how good your area looks, secretly they'll go back home to their friends and family and have a laugh at you.
It'd be kind of like supplying non-alcoholic beer at a party… just get the real stuff!

  • Bunnings is usually 4.90 /lm for 90x19 merbau and 4.70 with trade discount.

I'd avoid Merbau as it causes forest destruction in SE Asia…. they are slow growing.

I recommend and have used Spotted Gum decking.

A fantastic long lasting timber that is sustainable and also support Australian jobs.

As a bonus I think Spotted Gum decks looks much better.

    • How much is spotted gum?

      • Significantly more $ typically. More of a variation in the colour, brown rather than red (merbau).

Spotted gum (if maintained) is probably the most appealing timber to the eye. Very popular for external cladding (I have it). Merbau is much easier to get though, can be had in 5.4m lengths, and more sizes.

        • Spotted gum isn't much more.. I remember I paid ~$4.50 during Master's sale last year.

As Ripped stated, I think it looks much better than Merbau which can look like painted once oiled.

Spotted gum can also be had in 5.4m lengths, but usually random lengths.

        • @JB1:

Fair enough, I thought it was in the $6's. You can aviod the 'painted' look by using oil as opposed to water based product on merbau.

The other advantage of merbau (if you want it) are 140mm widths. There may be a wider than 90mm spotted gum for decking but I believe it's much thicker, therefore very pricey.

        • @Ripped:

Spotted Gum comes in 86mm widths rather than 90mm for whatever reasons.

You can get 130mm spotted gum decking in 19mm, but the 140mm ones are 25mm.

I'm not a fan of wider boards anyway, much more prone to cupping and I don't think they look as good.

        • @JB1:
Have to agree on some and not on others.
I've used a fair amount of aesthetic timber over the past few years on several properties. Here's my latest: https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/80583/34517/image.jpg
          https://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/80583/36372/20151219_1…
This screen has a mixture of sizes from 42, 70, 90, 140, and yes… 86mm gum. And yep, price of the gum late last year was comparable to the merbau. I like the gum, but it was very (let's say) waxy when I got it.
Anyway, yep, the gum is great timber, but usually dearer / not on special, and harder to obtain in quantity.

Oh, and the disagree is with the width. Personal opinion of course, but everyone I know has commented how good the 140s look on the deck and wished they'd used them. Oh, and a lot less 'screwing' around… literally! ;)

          @Snoop:

Nice job.. that gave me some ideas for my next house

Is the patern random or semi random, I'm saw some paterns but then wasn't there in the next section.

Spotted Gum is waxy, which is interesting so you gotta let it weather a bit before applying oil.

Aesthetics aside, the main issue with 140mm boards is cupping as water sits on top for longer… I'm not sure about you by I enjoy screwing! lol

        • @JB1:
          Thanks. Yeah, semi random!
I knew how many pieces I had of each and tried to roughly divide them up per section. To make it easier I bought everything in 2.4s or 4.8s and decided just to leave them uncut/uneven at the top.
The original screen that we'd seen was left to weather different greys, but we just couldn't do it to ours after seeing the effect of the differing reds up there.

I'm currently hunting for Spotted Gum (86x19) in Melbourne. I won't do Merbau for the same reasons as @JB1. I also love the character and warmth from spotted gum (as well as excellent durability). Pricing seems to be between mid $5 to low $6 per LM, in random lengths. ~$4.50 would be fantastic but no luck so far. My local timber yard says spotted gum pricing is a bit seasonal.

Spotted gum is currently $5.90 l/m at Masters. Next week they have 10% off, with the gift card discount of 7.5% off. For the little bit extra , I'm going spotted gum :)

        • As frazel said, buy them on sale at Masters and they are quite cheap.

Masters random lengths = go there early and pick and choose the lengths you want.

Good on you for not using Merbau, plus spotted gum looks much better to me.

  • Damn I just bought this last week. Looks like I'm going back to get more to start a new project.

Tannin bleed is …a lot more than I expected. Been using napisan to fast track the weathering.

Using this on a slatted screen and a gate/fence
