Herman Miller Sayl Chair - $695 (usually $855) from Living Edge

500

Free pick-up from warehouse in Alexandria, NSW.

This is a good price for a top-quality ergonomic chair - I bought mine earlier on sale but at $750. Extremely comfortable and comes with the Herman Miller 12-year warranty. Probably not for everyone, but as someone who sits at my desk for long periods, saving me from back pain is well worth the $60/year.

I've noticed a previous deal from January 2014 for $490 - back in the heady days of the high AUD, but I have not seen anything near as cheap recently.

They are indeed very comfortable. Bought two at that 2014 price and even then thought long and hard if it was worth it.

Armrest height adjustment a bit hit and miss, and chair could be hard to clean if it's dusty. If I bought them in 2014, still have 10 years warranty!

    • +2

I'm curious what's wrong with the armrest height adjustment? With mine, all I need to do is raise it to the top, which then allows it to be adjusted down (I had to read the instructions before I understood this!)

      • @Piangi

With mine, it goes up in steps to the max, then you start again. So in my case I'd need to remember how many "clicks" I went through to find the comfortable height. It's not a big deal, but takes longer at times than it should.

    • A vacuum 'brush' attachment will be your best friend for any dust.

      • +2

        @Shiny Mew

That's why I buy so many Dyson handheld vacuums!! LOL

  • Nice find. I currently have a Steelcase Think. It's good, but I wouldn't say worth what it cost.

If I had to get a new chair I would probably go with one of the Sayls - I really like the look of them and they're a lot cheaper than an Aeron.

    • +1

I bought the Steelcase Leap chair last year and love it. Haven't sat on the think for long periods.

      • where do you get one

        • They don't sell them in retail stores, well they didn't back when i bought it. Call steelcase melbourne here and you can make an appointment to go to the office and demo one. They normally do commercial sales but they did do one off sale when i wanted one.

  • Got an Aeron when moved into my new office in November, ruined my back and others, so we are all going with something new now.

    • +21

Ruined your backs? Im guessing you were all sitting on the same chair…..together…

      • -2

I've heard a lot of people say that it was bad on their back.

FYI the Aeron was not created with ergonomics in mind.

I have a Mirra, which I much prefer to an Aeron. Although I have used both.

        • technically, they aren't designed for ergonomics against current understanding of good working patterns (they are a very old design really), but against most other chairs on the market they are still a lot better than most chairs out there and appear to be built to last.

If your really worried about your back, make sure you don't sit for any longer than about 40 minutes at a time without taking a break and moving your legs. Lots of info out there now suggesting that the bigger health problem is sitting down for long continuous stints not what chair your on.

p.s. our aeron's a a few years old now, still going strong. Yes, not 100% comfortable but reminds me to get up and move. I never liked the Mirras.

        • Mirra 2 design is much newer than Aeron, if memory serves the Aeron design is about a decade old.

        • @paulojr: technically, they aren't designed for ergonomics against current understanding of good working patterns

That would definitely kill the deal (for the Aeron)!

    • Gumtree? EBay?

    • LOL. You were sitting on it wrong or have serious back problems that you should see a doctor about.

    • +2

It's comments like these which make it hard to know anything anymore. It's supposed to be one of the comfiest and ergonomic office chairs in the world, around for aeons and purchased in the millions. Then someone comes around and says it actually completely fails in the ergonomics department. I'm so confused now.

  • +4

I have the Mirra 2, best chair I ever bought.

    • Agree, tried out the Mirra 2 at length in store and loved it. Unfortunately no one sells them second hand so ended up getting a cheap Aeron.

      • +3

My wife was sceptical when I told her I want a Herman Miller either a Aeron/Mirra, took her to the store and tried Sayl, Aeron and Mirra she was surprised how comfortable Aeron & Mirra is and let me fork out the hard earn straight away.

        • could you tell me which store has those chairs that i could sit on them to try?

        • +3

@Flow220: Living Edge has a showroom in Alexandria where you can try the chairs (and look at a lot of other pretty furniture).

        • +1

          @Flow220:

Pretty much what Piangi said, if you have the cash they are best bang for bucks office chairs you can ever hope for if you like the mesh fabric, especially if you sit more than 8 hrs a day.

Otherwise most fabric office chairs itself cost about $400-$500 bucks itself unless your employer is a very tight arse and opt for Officeworks $50 specials.

        • @Speedz:

Better yet, since my dad is one of those tight arses I watched Gumtree for several months for a good used ergonomic chair deal and eventually came upon 4x near-new three-way adjustable fabric ergonomic office chairs similar to this for around $60: http://www.staples-3p.com/s7/is/image/Staples/s0437019_sc7?$splssku$ I must have saved around $700 by doing so.

Ergonomic office chairs, perfectly functional, are thrown out into hard rubbish amazingly often. When I go around collecting hard rubbish every now and then (I live in the antique capital of the Southern Hemisphere - guess where - and there is good and eco-friendly profit to be made), I often pick up one or two to add to a burgeoning shed collection.

        • @Shiny Mew:

That is a very nice fabric office chair, just a PITA during summer unless you have nice aircon with fabric chairs.

Haha hope you get to see my stolen bike on Gumtree or curbside too, my brand new shiny bike was stolen from the rack off New Acton 2 months ago, still seething and very angry here.

    • Same here, I compared it with the Aeron but found the Mirra 2 much better on my back.

      • A bad back (sports injury) was the main reason I got the Mirra 2 as well.

  • +4

ELI5, why are chairs so damn expensive?

    • +1

I don't get it also. Go to Costco and you can get similar mesh chair for ~300 rrp. You won't tell the difference unless if you're hardcore fans or HM owner.

    • +1

Can't comment on this exact chair but with my steelcase Leap, which was more expensive it comes down to the ability to completely configure the chair to your liking so you can sit comfortabley. Also the build quality is much better than cheaper chairs that I've used and the warranty is 8years or so.

    • Not sure why getting negged, I too would like to know.

    • +1

Mainly the quality, long warranty, ergonomics (lots of moving parts to not break) and actually designed for someone to use one consistently for 8-12 hours per day through the warranty period.

  • I had one of these at work for about 6 months, didn't really rate it to be honest. I use a Steelcase Leap at home for long periods of time (browsing OzBargains of course) and believe it's the most comfortable chair i've ever used.

    • +1

I went out and checked the Steelcase Leap on your recommendation and thought, not bad, $300.

      Then I looked again ……. $3000!

      Thanks but no thanks.

      • I was quoted about $900 for a new one from the shop. Not sure how they went up to $3000… anyway, i bought mine through gumtree for $250

        • @SamR:

Wow. Apparently they're the only official distributor in AU, so have a monopoly on pricing.

Perhaps buying from overseas and having it shipped may end up more fiscally palatable.

        • @SamR: I bought my Steelcase Leap for about $975 from James Richardson office furniture.

        • @coxymla:

The don't seem to sell Steelcase anymore

        • @SamR: Nah Zoxoro has stupid prices for almost everything on their site.

I can't actually figure out how they make any money, but I was looking at a specific trail running jacket a few weeks ago that is generally around $60-160, but Zoxoro decided that it was worth over $400, which is unheard of even in brick and mortar stores.

        • @Telios: There's a steelcase outlet in Sydney - Pyrmont http://www.steelcase.com/asia-en/find-us/where-to-buy/dealer… try them

  • +5

Living edge's website really sucks. Form was considered significantly more important than function.

  • FYI, bought my leap second hand for $250… best money i've ever spent in my home office

    • Where did you manage to find a second hand leap for $250?

      • +1

Gumtree :) Keep an eye out, they pop up from time to time. The guy I bought from was an office refitter, and collected the old furniture…

  • -1

Wanted a Herman Miller but ended up buying this http://www.milandirect.com.au/office-furniture/office-chairs…

Not the same quality, but overall a good solid chair. On and off this mob offers $50 Amex credit and free delivery.

    • 1 year warranty?

      • Yes standard 1 year, but can be purchased up to 3. (Personally I don't trust online sellers with their warranty process so for me it's like came with no warranty)

  • +2

I can't say these are the most comfortable chairs I have used but they aren't too bad.

Ripped both back buttons off my pants the first day I used it. The weave has a tendency to catch buttons on the back pockets. Just something to keep in mind.

    • +3

This is true - on the rare occasion I wear pants with back buttons at home, the buttons have caught from time to time.

    • @kievmeister

I'm surprised - the seat is rather deep, and the back curves away near the cushion. Just tried it, I suppose my buttons sit lower.

      • I lost a few buttons initially - I guess I now tend to sit a little further forward. I still get the occasions when I have been sitting back and go to move forward and feel the buttons catching. Big butt…what can I say…

  • So why this over Buro?

    • +1

      Because Herman Miller.

    • +1

Because more expensive must mean better…

  • Bought one of these over a year ago - couldn't be happier with the product. After my laptop it is the second most expensive item in my study - worth it!

  • Bought one when it was $490. Still looks as good as new. Very happy with it

  • +2

I was the OP back in Jan 2014 at $490 - 2 years on still a great chair very comfortable and I spend all day in it. Downside is the squeaking this was mentioned by some who had the chair prior to my buying one. Also the armrest rubber at the front tends to perish and crack.

Warranty is unbelievable though, called for repair thinking I would have to take the chair back to Living Edge and they send the repairer out to you!
He did try and fix the squeak but that came back, the armrests need to be renewed again but everything else still looks like new.

Err… Thanks but I'd rather buy a plane ticket! Or a cheap car, than a chair.

    • You'd buy a car for <1k?

        • Err… Thanks but I'd rather buy a plane ticket! Or a cheap car, than a chair.

    Waiting for Aeron

    • …and the mirra. Was planning to buy the Mirra2 full price within the next 10 days.

      Fingers crossed!

  • Just to clarify, I bought mine in July 2014 at a 20% off sale at Living Edge for $575.

  • +2

Bought mine at the $490 price a while back.
It's uncomfortable to fall asleep in, since there's no head/neck support. If you lean back on it without a shirt (eg. in summer), it will leave an interesting pattern in your back =P

  • We have the Mirra 2's in our office and I dont like them at all. It's reasonably comfy but I have replaced mine with a flashy office chair which cost half the price f the Mirra and is twice as comfy.

    Overpriced IMO.

  • The high end chair I have from officeworks has a neck rest which I would find hard to say goodbye to for these other chairs.

  • -2

Classic ozbargain, god forbid anyone buys a decent new car they get destroyed on why they are wasting money but a $700 computer chair is just fine!

    • It's not wasting money when a large number of us spend upwards of 6 hours a day on these things. Considering the cost over time (based on the 10 year warranty) is just $60/year, it is easily more than worth it.

I spent more on a physio every week (for a month or two) when years of sitting on a PoS office chair wrecked my lower back.

      As they say, don't be penny-wise pound-foolish.

If you want to upgrade to the Embody (arguably Herman Miller's best chair, and successor to the Aeron), keep an eye out at the innerspace.net.au website (or email Barry). They occasionally do bulk purchases (in all black) and it'll save you a fortune. I picked up mine for $1295 in late 2014 - which is $555 cheaper than the price at Living Edge.

    • +2

I have an Embody also, highly recommend them. The Innerspace store manager noticed me coming in and testing it out a couple of days in a row and he offered me the floor stock for $1000 because he wanted to change the display colour. All options bells and whistles included on the chair. It was in great condition and with the normal 12 years warranty so I jumped at the offer.

      • Bargain! Damn!

  • +2

Looks like this chair is on "Sayl"

  • Not a bad deal, I bought the Ergohuman V2 Deluxe during the 15% off ebay sale for $611.
I would have preferred to get the Steelcase Leap or Gesture but the crappy Aussie dollar killed that idea for me. I saw some people over in Whirlpool picking those up pretty cheap a year ago

  • WOW! someone rich please buy me one!

  • -1

By and large, a bum deal.

What height does the seat go to?
