Please Help Me Find a Most Reliable Antivirus

There are various antivirus available from Kaspersky, Norton and Trend micro to name a few. Also, there are couple of free downloadable antivirus available online. And I was wondering which is best to use. I have a windows 10. Thanks all.

no need third party anti virus, windows has built in protection since windows 7 or 8 i cant remember. just make sure you update regularly. and beware when browsing.

He did say reliable and Windows Defender is not that. It also slows down your PC more than most. Double fail.

      • Windows defender doesn't slow down your PC and most of all it doesn't cause bsods like more then a few of the well known antiviruses

Of course it does. Do you think it scans files by magic? No, it scans files like any other antivirus but does it less efficiently than dedicated antivirus programs like Kaspersky and Bitdefender. You can look at it's performance score on any antivirus testing authority to verify this or if you don't believe them, copy a few thousand small files with Defender turned on and off, run PC Mark with it turned on and off, etc.

          For example, page 10 here:

          http://www.av-comparatives.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/11/av…

It also misses far more viruses than dedicated antivirus programs.

In summary, it's a crap product which is better than nothing but much worse than the competition. Avira and Avast are both better for the same price (free) and I've never had BSODs with either.

    • It's fine if you choose not to run a 3rd party antivirus, but be sure to always perform cold backups in case your computer is overtaken by crypto ransomware.

Ransomware causes irreversible data loss — not much of an impact on a regular home user but if you have important stuff and memories they can be easily lost, even if you have the neccessary precautions in place.

I prefer Kaspersky and BitDefender. But latest Kaspersky (2016) firewall blocks my shares from NAS, have to tweak few settings to make it work better.
My laptop is running BitDefender from free 6 month trial (https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/228560). Works out of box.

If you don't want to pay, I suggest you to try 360 Total Security. https://www.360totalsecurity.com/en/

    • Why 360totalsecurity is free? Did they get name from norton 360?
If they dont make money, how will they survive and work on new threats?

      • This is the global version of 360 AV in China. Similar to YouTube and any free service, Qihoo(maker of 360 AV) offers free products to attract usage. Then They make money from advertisements and premium services.

        Check business model in https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Qihoo_360

        • Well, in that case, won't be taking risk, taken how Chineese Communist govt. is spying on everything, I might spend little on cheaper options available like Kaspersky or Eset Nod 32.
Sometimes I also think antivirus is a scam where these companies invest in viruses themselves and threat you big.

  • AVG has free version. Works fine.

    • i left avg after many years , they push their paid products to much and have so many useless functions combined with it.

    • Aren't they spying on you with free version?

      • Every Antivirus who has Anti-phishing or Web Protection is spying on you with your cookies.

        • They had privacy statement stating that data will be used.. Search ozbargain to have more details as I dont remember exactly. I wont be that person where antivirus spy and then use that info. Its like free VPNs.

  • Avira or Avast.

    Free: Avira
Paid: Bitdefender or Kaspersky. Deals for both posted here in the last week.

I'm not sure how reliable these are but taken together, they might be somewhere near the truth:

  • I recommend Kaspersky Internet Security 2016.

  • i use total 360… pretty happy with it

Bitdefender Free or Avast Free. Then use Malwarebytes Anti-Malware, and good common sense.

  • I use Avast Free (Paid version slowed my computer badly)
Coupled with running Malware Bytes manually once a week.

    • (Paid version slowed my computer badly)

That was probably the Avast Internet Security

    • I switched to Avira a few months ago and I've noticed it does a lot less nagging than Avast.

  • Thanks everyone. Much appreciated.
