    You done f'd up eBay…

  • +1

Anybody have issues with sellers having no stock? Besides Dick Smith of course…

  • eBay you guys are disappointed everyone… Not informed the closing date by email…

  • How long were people waiting on chat. Been 15 minutes and still waiting. Must be getting swamped, or intentionally ignoring me. Either way, you f-ed up big time on this one.

  • i just contact ebay chat for 15 mins but they not help then i request a call from ebay and they said to me i just need to pay for the item and then they will help to credit back in 15 days

  • Just got off a 1 hour on hold phone…but they said once i buy the item i wanted, they will credit my account with the discount in mid jan…BELIEVE PEOPLE THERE IS HOPE!

i bought the item while on the phone and got a reference number. the lady did say however the reason was about some sellers complaining about stock, perhaps dont buy off a major retailer like dicksmith or whatever to better your chances

    • How did you get them to change their mind?

      • +1

i asked them if it was possible, i remained very calm and polite and understood that it isnt the person on the phone's fault. She was really helpful!

    • +2

If they really wanted to fix it properly, they would just give you a coupon code that's tied to your account. Their system allows for it, and it's been done for promotions before. Saying they'll credit you later is an empty promise unlikely to be fulfilled.

    • +1

The stock excuse is such a cop out. Stores can delist items if they want and the larger ones should have the resources to properly manage inventory anyway. eBay lets them limit how many items are available so stores should just make use of the tools available.

If the excuse was true, which I doubt it is, I find it highly interesting they decided to take a PR hit instead of asking what was likely a small number of retailers to sort their own inventory out.

I'd really love to see the ACCC fine a few companies in a big way for mismanagement of stock levels. It too often causes easily avoided fiascos.

    • +5

Except do you want this to become the norm for business practice in Australia?

If Ebay don't get punished for contraventions to the TPA, then what signal does this send.

      • -1

Meh..and what part of the Trade Practices Act have they contravened? You are wrong with your interpretation and any legal counsel would advise you of the same.

        • +1

          Wrong.

The Australian Consumer Law prevents misrepresentations about price reductions (Hello Dick Smith Electronics). It also provides provision that if the T&C's are against the general message of the ad, they are invalid (the case with airfares excluding charges in advertising is a case in point). Perhaps you should stop been an armchair lawyer yourself.

        • @sambutler9876: I am not and for the sake of your credibility please do let the OB community know how you get on with your inquiries with the ACCC.

        • +1

          @MaMan:

ACCC don't respond directly to complainants, as far as I am aware.

        • -1

          @sambutler9876:

          Web form ID: accc-complaint-(REDACTED)

Thank you for contacting the ACCC. We appreciate you taking the time to write to us.

If you simply reported misconduct to us, and do not need our advice, we may not respond to you.

If you need information or advice from us, or we need to refer you to another agency, we will usually write to you within 15 business days of your submission to us

        • +3

          @MaMan: Isn't that confirming what I said?

    • +1

      Be grateful that your alive

I hope that something you purchased was a Dictionary :P

  • Thats a cop out. The retailers have every right to remove the stock from their listings if they want to.

It would of have to had been a bricks and mortar store for this to be a concern for them anyway. Dick Smith, Good Guys or someone like that.

  • +1

Just talked with live chat. They weren't gonna budge until I told them I'll lodge with ACCC as I don't believe the low stock excuse is true. It's false advertisement to me. I'll let the ACCC to decide on that.

    • I just mentioned the ACCC and they then stated they will send me the 15% discount in 10-15 business days, cheers!

  • It's certainly not the norm of business practice in Australia, it may be not a breach. Read the Terms & Conditions. You are not 'entitled' to a sale. They don't have to offer 15% off to anyone, they have chosen to offer 15% off. I certainly don't condone what Ebay have done, but its not end the end of the world. Like I said, many of us on here, including MYSELF have missed out on many many great deals in the past. You have to change your outlook on life. Its funny people always want 'revenge' and 'punishment' when something doesn't go there way.

    • It is a breach of the TPA. Your comments show how little you know about commercial law. There are provisions in the TPA that state " A corporation shall not, in trade or commerce, engage in conduct that is misleading or deceptive."

Furthermore, T&C's mean little. T&C's can not remove a company from their statutory obligations.

I haven't lost out myself, as going direct to the website revealed a coupon code for 15% to buy from them direct anyway.

any one buying an S6 read this

  • Can anyone shed some light on this situation, looking to purchases a phone in next hour or so, what's the best way to get eBay to refund the 15%.

    • Contact them (i just did live chat) and say you were going to buy with the discount. My person knew what i was after and offered the discount as a refund in january, but it might differ with people so you might need to mention ACCC etc.

    • +1

I just bought an Iphone 6s, basically on the chat I first asked why the 15% didn't apply, they said it had expired I then advised that my friend contacted their team and they said if he made the purchase they would refund the credit in 10-15 days. If they decline tell them you will put a complaint into the ACCC and they should allow the refund in 10-15 days.

Confirm your ebay and paypal email address are the same, then stay on the online chat and make the purchase and give them the item number.

Then we wait for 10-15 business days..

      • +1

Success, just need to wait for seller to respond ;)

  • +1

Changing T&C during a promotion is dishonest.

  • +9

Just called up eBay - after being on hold for 20 minutes was told eBay would credit the discount to my account after 10-15 business days but I needed to make the purchase!

    • Said I was trying to apply discount code and it didn't work. Said after looking further online found out eBay had withdrawn offer.
    • Asked if there's anything they could do about honouring the promotion just this one time as I already had items in cart
    • Was told that I just need to pay for purchase today - they emphasised today - and I can receive the credit.
    • I purchased the items while on the phone, so that he could escalate the issue on his end once it was purchased. He needed the item no's of the items purchased.
    • Said if I dont' receive discount within 10-15 business days then I should contact them to escalate the issue.

Note: I clarified whether this was up to the marketing department for 'approval' but they mentioned it was guaranteed.

I also asked staff if they were told why eBay pulled the offer early - eBay were concerned about the effect of discount on stock levels that would impact on customer's experiences.. but ironically pulling the discount has further impacted customer's experience.

Good luck to those trying! It worked for me remaining polite and courteous -> but whatever works for you!

    • +1

      Oh the irony!

    • Forgot to mention: They originally wanted me purchase and then call back with item no's. I said I was concerned about whether the person I got when I called back would be able to offer the same thing, and they said that all their staff should know what to do - which I interpreted as they are aware of the credit and are able to offer it to customers.

    • Good on you and yet another example of the appropriate way to wade through this. Good advice to remain polite and courteous too. Being an Ass won't help your cause. If only the tightly strung and armchair laywer's on here would do the same then there would be little to whinge about.

      • +1

If Ebay had sent me a nicely worded Email explaining there was a problem and apologising for their mistake then I could agree with you. That's not what is happening, at this point they are still wasting people's time, there are still people planning to complete their purchases b4 the notified expiry.
The only reason I'm not pulling my hair out trying to get the code to work is I noticed the expired on OzBargain.
If you want to call me names good on you, happy new year to you too.

        • -2

Mate, no one is calling you names I am commenting on the behaviors of what is a minority…. simply folks have 2 choices, either make contact with Ebay or don't. My comments are in support of people wanting to get their discount and going about it the correct way.

What's done is done and there is a clear choice to be made. Whinging about it might make some feel good on the inside but it does not offer a real solution. There are countless more on OB that have had a successful outcome than not and will remember this deal as being good for them long after the dust has settled.

        • +1

          @MaMan:
Ok I'm gonna use your wording here,'Whinging about it might make some feel good on the inside' .
If having a vent about the inconvenience, which is real, makes people feel better why detract from that by calling them tightly strung and armchair lawyers.
And consider this, it would seem you advocate being courteous while denigrating a group of your audience.

        • -2

@tonka: Ok dude I forgot to mention another group - the overly precious…..

Look at the string of posts below who are having success……..our advice is not rocket science.

        • +1

          @MaMan:
The method is quite valid and well known to all.

The advice be polite and courteous is just hypocritical, whether I'm overly precious, tightly strung, whinger, ass or whatever you want to label me, I just don't think there is a need to put down your fellow Ozbargainers.

        • -3

@tonka: Settle Petal. Again, no one is putting you down. Damn I would give you a hug if I thought it would help you.

        • +4

@MaMan: I'm not upset, just trying to show you your message was contradictory and there is need to put people down.
Perhaps you already know as you follow up your disclaimer with an insult? So on the presumption I've just fallen for a lure I'll forego any further reply.

        • +5

@MaMan: Do you work for ebay MaMan?

        • @bargainslut: Nope. No affiliation just a customer.

        • @MaMan: Just made a phone call and got my 15% on my second order. Order placed at 5pm in the ACT. Ebay customer service were superb.

        • +1

@bargainslut: Awesome! Wrapped for you. It's an inconvenience but worth it for the 15%.

        • +1

          @MaMan: Exacaweee:)

  • +2

Live Chat - waited about 30min for a rep to join
Advised I added items to my cart prior to the promo ending prematurely
I advised that I was told in this situation I could get a refund after making the purchase if we spoke to an ebay rep

(AGENT) XXXXXX: eBay saw an overwhelming demand of the 15% site wide promotion and there was no other option than to end it earlier than expected. We apologise for the inconvenience that this has caused and it was not eBay's intention for the promotion not to go for the length of time we had hoped. If you would like to go ahead and purchase the product you had planned we will credit your account the 15% off within 21 days. We once again apologies for any inconvenience this has caused

Ebay emails you a copy of your chat after it's finished, so can be used if any problems

No need to threaten ACCC, Lawyers or be rude to these poor guys being paid peanuts to deal with a decision that was made much higher than them

  • +1

I just used chat and phone to organise the 15% credit. Did both concurrently because I was unsure who would connect first. They both connected same time so went ahead with both anyway.

Chat initially said "no can do". But they changed their mind easily. Phone guy straight up said he'll organise a credit in 15-20 days.

Here is the chat log. https://www.dropbox.com/s/6ag5lnz92rkoelp/Yamini.docx?dl=0

    • Spoke to the same person and got the same response!

  • +2

Relax! Just add items to your cart/watch list and wait till the next sale comes around and then you can buy instantly ;) The Samsung G6 or technology item you wanted now will probably drop 15% in value in the next 2 months.. So by the time the next sale comes around you actually save 15% drop in value+ 15% ebay + 4% cashback ;)

    • shhhh! I just bought an s6

      • i bought second hand international model s6 too for $380 but with small crack at back case, hope this is good price!

  • +1

Lady on the phone wont give me the 15%

    • Call again and try. Mine went through first time around.

  • +1

eBay advised they will honour 15% for me. Unfortunately I only made a $300 purchase yesterday, still, money in my pocket is better than theirs. I was going to buy 2 items but told the seller I wasn't interested after eBay scrapped the promo.

  • Requested for a callback, received it in about 10 mins. Told the lady that I had the item in Wish List and today I've moved them to my cart when I'm ready. Applied the code but it didn't work, she gave the standard spill but she'll do it for this case.

After checking for a bit, she realized that my Paypal account isn't an Australian account. She was worries that it might not go through but some further checking, she said it'll work and advised me to wait 10-15 business days.

  • Anyone done a live chat and not receive the chat transcript?
How long does it usually take to be emailed to you after the chat?

  • Went through the live chat and everything went smoothly. They are all aware of the issue and a 15% refund will be processed in 2-3 weeks.

  • I did live chat just now too. I had the items already in my cart, they just checked the card and said "OK for those items, 15% refund in 2-3 weeks".
They listed item numbers in the chat window and all done.

  • Noticed that Target has relisted both the $368 PS4 console and the $369 Xbox + Lego console after suddenly being removed prior to the 15% off ….
Makes me really wonder whether it was one or a combination of the bricks and mortar stores that pressured Ebay to stop the promo early … certainly Target must have been aware of the promo , as I cant believe these items disappearing before the "sale" and then re-appearing after the "sale" was cut short to be coincidental..

    • I've heard some brands set their own retail price and the re-seller is contractually not allowed to sell at a different price.
No idea if it's true , I was told this in reference to Maui Jim, but it was a few years ago.
I can imagine brands like Xbox and Playstation may behave in this way as they are so notorious for their gradual price stages.
I've been curious whether that's why some stuff disappears. Maybe the problem is this event is leaving some retailers open to litigation from their suppliers as they weren't given the opportunity to adjust their stock and prices.
I know in theory the discount comes from Paypal but there's lot's of room for argument and most corporate lawyers are majorly risk adverse.

    • Just wondering, if people are able to get 15% back in 21 days, then would you be able to buy the $369 bundle and get 15% back?

I mean, the item wasn't available during the sale, so would you be allowed to?…

  • +2

The real losers are once again those legitimate part time sellers who just put up their extra stuff at end of year.

  • "<info about exact refund amount and successfully escalated to marketing team>

The credits will be reflected on your PayPal account. Please be informed that processing time would be 10 to 15 business days.

Thank you for choosing eBay! Happy holidays!"

    Happy days! Will revoke neg

  • +2

Just FYI for all the people bagging on Cashrewards - I have already received tracking acknowledgements from them for my Ebay purchases.
    Anyone else?

    • Same here - 1 confirmation for each of the multiple items in my transaction

    • Nothing for purchases yesterday

    • +5

The problem with cashrewards is they are not consistent.
3 transactions undertaken all on the same day, all with same browser same config etc. etc. following all the rules.
2 transactions have tracked and 1 has tracked for the wrong amount… seriously!!

Have contacted them but waiting for a response - unfortunately suspect it will be the usual… "its Ebay so we have a no contest policy "
There is quite clearly something wrong with how they track although most comments suggest that multiple purchases have tracked for them. Maybe I'm just unlucky.. Im happy to work with them to determine where it goes wrong but I feel its pretty much their business model and they stick to the usual retort - i.e. "the 5% that doesnt track"

    • Where do you find the tracking information?

    • I have received email confirmation from CR on 30/12/15 for all 5 items that I purchased.

  • +2

Hey guys, just placed on the phone and was informed I will receive a credit of 15% to my PayPal account within 21 days. Hope this helps anyone whose looking at ordering something!

  • +2

Oh man. Was going to buy on the assumption that it ended on the 31st. Any reason for the change?

I will probably not purchase now.

  • +1

Ho guys, not trying to ruin the party for the ebay promised 15% credit in the next 20 days, I wish my argument proved wrong in the next 20 days. Why ebay even bothet to give 15% credit whilst they can reinstate the 15% discount as they are receiving lots of phone calls chatting which gave them a lot of work. Plus they have to credit you in the future. Why they cannot just give you the unique code for your account ? I wish I am wrong, but good luck to chase that 15% credit in the future. Why they need to wait for 20 days whilst they can do it straight away like a refund thing ? They want people to forget about the credit and they will not even give it when you come back to them after 20 days. All the best guys.

    • That's exactly what I've been thinking.

If they can change the T&C as they see fit?
They can always come up with ways to not honour their 15% credit in the next 20 days.

At worst, the following can happen:

      1. eBay will drag this out for as long as possible and not credit back within the proposed time frame.
      2. Claim administration error and not credit back the 15% as they have changed the T&C to end this deal on 30th December. Therefore all purchases made after this date are not eligible for any discount.
      3. Give buyers an option to return item(s) for a full refund.
      4. Give buyers a $50 voucher to cover return shipping

There has to be a reason why some people have been promised for a credit back and some haven't.

  • +7

Live chat workers are thinking… It's new years eve and eBay slaps this poop on my lap. Thanks for making my 2015 a year to remember. Some workers where probably coming to work thinking it's going to easy day… haha. Oh the wrath of ozbargainers don't stop on any day.

  • +4

Unbelievable. I skipped a night of sleep researching/deciding on a laptop and several other things I cannot get here in Australia. Then as I collapse into bed this morning - assuming I can sleep a few hours before actually making the purchases - I see this on my phone! What a waste of time!! Had the items in my watch list, but not cart yet, because hadn't clicked through from CR yet.

Does this 15% off come up often/regularly?

    • +1

Oh - and all this would affect businesses like CR too - everyone jumping onboard to purchase, now won't bother. So I hope all affected businesses have something to say about it.

I can't even comprehend how stock levels have anything to do with this. It was SITEWIDE. Did the entire planet run out of secondhand things to sell!? Who cares if GG, HN, or DS didn't have stock!

Also did a search to try and find how often these sales come up, and noticed:

      1. ebay has a facebook page.
      2. The comment showing in the search results said, "Why are you deleting all the comments about the cancelled 15% off promotion?"

And I went there… and surprise, that guy's comment was deleted too, LOL.

      It's just dirty.

  • +5

I just sold a $200+ item yesterday. So i phoned ebay on behalf of my buyer and they said they were gonna refund the 15% to my buyer.

Also got my dxracer chair (came down to $340, plus cashrewards -$16 = $324) from dxracer-oz before all this commotion too.

  • I bought a camera body on the 29th, then decided later to get a lens too. I put in a 'best offer' that was rejected, then I put in another. I was awaiting a response when eBay pulled the pin on the promo. I quickly cancelled the best offer and tried to add the item to my cart to pay their asking price less 15% while the code was still active, but it wouldn't let me add it to the cart because I had already purchased the maximum number (1) of that item. I hadn't, but there must have been a glitch with the best offer side of things.

So I ended up having to buy a different coloured lens from the same seller for the same price and managed to get the 15% off. I asked the seller if they could swap the colours, but they couldn't guarantee it. Had eBay let the promotion run its course, I would have likely received $10 off with the best offer, and would have had a lens that matches the colour of my camera.

Not massive issues, but enough to leave me with negative thoughts toward eBay, despite being able to make use of the 15% off promotion.

  • I can still get the 15% as others have mentioned i just spoke with them Ill take the risk on the Camera the d750 at $1650 is just to good to pass up I might buy from DWI as they have it in stock Teds doesn't

  • +6

What a mess, ending it early and what not.. today i have 3 buyers telling me they cant apply the coupon and another one telling me he got charged the full price of the item and wants me to refund him the difference… fun times.. NOT.

    • A quick search (because I'm too mad to do a long one), shows ebay %-off sales come up about every 3 months. The last site-wide one was late September:

"eBay 15% off Sitewide Offer (Min Spend $50, Max Discount $100)".

In your case, direct the buyers hear to read how to try and get the discount. Otherwise claim the item is 'lost or no longer available' or whatever it is that I often see, to let the other poor guy off the hook.

Though why should you have to LIE because EBAY can't be honest! It was plastered on the site and emailed to everyone in Australia, if not the globe!

    • And this why I dont sell on eBay anymore. eBay does not support their sellers.

  • -1

I just done my second order at 5pm in the ACT.

After placing the order I called Ebay and spoke to 2 very helpful people. They have confirmed verbally and in writing that the 15% will be placed into my paypal account in 15-21 business days.

    • +1

Did you already have the items in your cart though? Or only just added them now??

      • -1

Added them an hour ago then purchased them.

        • Sorry to bother you again, but I'm about to checkout - and obviously you can't enter the code now. Did ebay only grant you the discount because you'd already made a purchase? Or to put it another way, how/what did you say, to get the discount after it 'expired'?

        • @realfamilyman: Hi, just did it myself. I was told no, deal expired end of story. I said I know that people complaining are getting told they will get the 15% back. I said I would rather not have to complain to get the same treatment and the guy said Ok marketing team will refund the 15% in 21days.

@realfamilyman: Hi, That's right. I made the purchase then called them and said it should expire on Dec 31st @23.59. I was really calm and they were super friendly and said the 15% would be applied.

This is how I envisioned it happening:

Marketing team A: "Let's do a 15% discount for our customers! It will be good for PR."

Marketing team B: "Let's give some buyers who have never sold anything 3 free listings so they get an idea how easy it is to sell so they will do it in the future!"

Finance team: "Marketing team A just gave everyone targetted by Marketing team B up to $900 each…"

Legal team: "We can only shut down the 15% discount offer as the 3 free listing offer was a binding contract (users had to click to accept offer)."

Marketing team C: "Thanks for hiring us for 2016!!….what happened to Marketing team A and B?"

    • I think you may have nailed it. I got told specifically several times that I would get the 15% back ONLY if I had complied with all the terms and conditions.

      • By that I assume they mean:

        1. Purchase made between 29th 11am AEDT and 11:59pm on the 31st
        2. Minimum spend $150
        3. Maximum of 2 transactions
        4. No more than 10 items per transaction
        5. Paypal & ebay email address the same

        ?

Just to clarify… If the code isn't accepted, we haven't really entered it, therefore we haven't complied with that condition. That's what concerns me.

        • You make a good point.

I didn't read them but previously there is something in there about not conspiring with a seller to rort the system. I'm betting that may be what the problem is. Combined with the free listings being offered to new sellers there is the opportunity to get some free cash here.
Maybe overseas scam centres have masses of proxy generated ebay accounts and they've been going for broke buying and selling.

        • @tonka:
Don't think that would work, ebay holds the money to new sellers for a long time before releasing, so they can easily void those transactions.

Ok, now I see a logical reason why they would quickly cancel the event. And I think it would be a fair one.

If you assume Marketing team A is in Australia, Marketing B can be in any Ebay Country around the world. All someone would need to do is figure which ebay country has the best advantages as a seller (eg free listings, less hold time on payments, etc) and set up an Ebay & Paypal Australia account to make the purchase. With proxys and other electronic means it will be very hard to prove its a fake listing. They can even ship actual products at over inflated prices with tracking numbers. Given this is not the first time Australia has run this promotion, these scammers have probably figured out ways to perfect this.

These promotions have been awesome, I hope this doesn't mean the end of the %off promotions. If this was a scams that shut it down, then I am sure there will be more hoops to jump through for the next promotion.

      Cheers

    • More like the following:

Finance team: given we are a US company we have 2 days to reach our sales target for our fiscal year - what do we do?

Marketing team: let's give a site wide discount in Australia - 15% should be right.

Finance team: good idea - the FX rate for them has gone down the toilet and shouldn't have much of an impact on our numbers. It's also a pretty tax effective place.

Legal team: we will put usual T&Cs to make it flexible

      …. 1 day into sales…

Finance team: pull out!!! The sale has gone way too well - anymore and we are going to completely cannibalise our Jan 2016 sales. WTF happened? How did it blow up so muc?

Marketing team: well doing some market research now there's this little thing called Ozbargain in Australia that happened….. ummmm so what do we do??

Legal team: the T&Cs lets us withdraw it early

Marketing team: but that's gonna make us look like complete a$$es

Finance team and legal team simultaneously: well that ain't my problem

Marketing team: over to you customer service guys

Customer service team: wtf? You guys didn't take ozbargain into consideration? Why the hell weren't we consulted initially?

1 day post ending sale early

Customer service team: OK dimwits you know all these Aussies are going ACCC over our asses to get their 15% discount. So what we do - need response urgently!

Legal team: we may have a problem and may be obliged to give them discount

Finance team: that's going to screw up our FY15 numbers…. Look if they force our hand then tell them we will give it to them in 21 days…. It will affect bonuses for the following year and at least not this year.

Marketing team: that would be a "win-win" situation

Customer service team: …. Better hearing complaints from ozbargainers than listen to this dribble…..

      • LOL. What I was told (see ego-stroking below) seems to indicate you're not far off the mark. And people are being told ebay is planning another 15% off… wonder what the next debacle with that, which they haven't considered - will be.

      • If that is their goal then it would have been better to clearly state the number of uses (a la Dick Smith codes) rather than time limited. Will also get people to buy early.

  • Damn it, if they had at least emailed saying they were going to pull the deal people could have checked out their carts, instead of waiting in case another deal came up prior to 2016, like I did.
