iPad Air 2 64GB

hey OZB, I need to purchase a full sized Ipad (not the mini) for my son to use at school as they've just started the Ipad program next year and hence I'm looking at getting the Ipad Air 2 64GB. I was holding off on purchasing one until around boxing day just in case of any deals but I haven't seen any pop up other than the ipad mini 3 clearance at DSE.

The cheapest I can find so far for the spec at a brick and mortar store is at Officeworks for $687 and I'm going on a short overseas trip shortly so looking at claiming back GST through TRS as well and potentially reducing this to $600.30. Does anyone have a better recommendation or would this really be the best deal that I can get at this stage?

Thanks

Office works is the best price. Plus you can go and get one today, they have stock at the moment.

    • cool mate, thanks for the confirmation :)

    • +1

Yup. Got one from OfficeWorks Click&Collect. Tried to save time asking Dick to price match but was told the OW price is BELOW COST!

  • +3

I also need one for my daughter after school gave us limited notice. Apparently her Ipad Mini doesn't fit the bill so having to get an Ipad Air or Air 2. I also need to purchase a Macbook Air for son entering high school. With Christmas and purchasing school supplies I'll be broke by end of the summer holidays! Any help appreciated with finding a bargain.

    • +1

tell me about it mate, my daughter will also be in the same boat with the Macbook Air in a year time too with her also going to high school

      • If you don't mind me asking. Are these private schools?

        • +3

A lot of government schools now teach using iPad. My kid also has to buy it last year. School also has a lot of iPads whixh the kids can use, so you don't really need to buy one.

The iPad program for primary school kids is a waste of time and money and does not help at all in learning. Kids use it as a toy to chat with class mates, watch youtube, play games etc. So in my personal experience, I haven't seen any advantage the kids would have if they were learning without using iPad.

Try to find gift cards on sale. I was able to get David Jones gift cards at 10% off. I had no problem with David Jones pricematching Officeworks. So 687 * 90% = $618.30 for the iPad Air 2.

      • +5

You misunderstood my post. I paid $618.30 for David Jones gift card worth $687 which I used to buy the iPad. I wasn't calculating for TRS 😊

  • +1

    get one from gumtree :)

my sister bought ipad air 2 64gb wifi + cellular for $580 pickup. no problem whatsoever as long as u check serial number and imei etc

    • -7

Fusakin - I was referring to the original poster's figures, not yours.

      • +2

You replied to the wrong comment

  • How does warranty work if the ipad was purchased via gumtree? Does it start from when the ipad is activated?

    • +1

I wouldn't risk gumtree for the sake of about $100.
If you do, make sure it's not iCloud locked, if it is, you've bought an expensive paperweight

      • ipad air 2 wifi and cellular 64 gb is $989 from apple store

bought for $580, how is that $100 difference ?

maybe if you talking about wifi version only.

warranty you can check online from apple website using their serial number

        https://checkcoverage.apple.com/

so make sure to check :

        • serial number
        • imei (if cellular version)
        • lock / unlock status from service provider
        • icloud lock status
        • get written receipt from the seller (if they have purchase receipt or some sort of paperwork that would be great)

for $400 difference from apple store i would do this again :)

        • +2

You can get a refurb with full Apple warranty for about $100 more. No one pays RRP

  • Thanks for all the input guys..I will keep in mind gumtree but I realised that I can get the 10% off David Jones gift card through Entertainment Book so I may go down that path first.

  • Ive just ordered David Jones Gift Cards through Entertainment Book. Thanks for the heads up Fusakin.

I tried price matching Officeworks at DJs and they said no…below their cost price. Same at Myer….so it might not be easy to find a store willing to do it.

    • +1

That totally sucks. I called up in advance and asked if they could pricematch Officeworks and they were happy to do this as well as hold the product for me to pickup later that day.

I would suggest that you message them on Facebook or email and exaggerate your anger that DJs broke their promise as stated on their website: http://www.davidjones.com.au/Our-Promise. Hopefully, upper management will arrange one for you at Officeworks' price. This would have been my plan if DJs refused to pricematch.

    • +1

Hey mate, do you mind sharing which store(s) you tried?

    • If you are near an Apple Store they do price matching as well. They have different % limits for devices vs accessories. There have been times they've just taken my word for it. Didn't bother looking up the price.

  • +1

OP if you have purchased 10% Big W gift card last week, perhaps buy DJ gift card from Woolies there is a $10 Woolies dollars valid till Tuesday 29/12/15 I think check the catalogue in case I am wrong. I think this is a better deal than buying from entertainment book.

    • Thanks for the tip. Imanaged to get the ewish via scoopon but apparently these are only being issued on the 8th of jan so I most probably would miss this unfortunately

      • If you order from cash rewards you may receive the voucher on time to buy DJ gift card from Woolies. I find Scoopon and Groupon takes forever to receive the vouchers.

  • +2

Is this a thing now - schools demanding Macbook airs and IPads (but no, an iPad mini is not good enough)?!
What if you can't afford it? Or is it a private school thing…

    • +1

the ipad program for my kids are at a public school and the macbook will be at a Catholic school. I agree that the outlay is pretty big though, especially now that the schoolkids bonus has been scrapped from this year.

      • +8

Wow. I am a techie at home but the mind boggles that iPads are considered necessary at school.
Not to mention kids not valuing others or their own property at that age. No way would I have been allowed to take a $500+ item to school.

        • +2

I'm a techie too and it just doesn't make sense. Give these kids a decent $200-$250 netbook and let them actually create/build something. It has been proven through numerous studies that iPads are not the way to go for kids.

        • @merill:

Small price to pay for having ebooks loaded and not having to carry around a massive back pack full of text books.

        • +2

@T1OOO: I prefer just using the .pdf's and I use any old computer.
the school computers often work just a fine - textbook loaded from USB
that was when I was in years 5-10

I don't see a value in iPads (although, i do use a rMBP for uni currently).
In years 10-12, I bought both iPad and Macbook Air to school. The iPad was pointless. I typed almost double the speed on air, and I feel like there wasn't anything that I couldn't do on the macbook than the iPad. I'd rather bring a mac charger instead of an iPad in my bag.

        • @T1OOO: the process of reading on screen tends to be cognitively different from the process of reading on paper, in terms of brain activation, the contextual environment, cognitive focus, comprehension, and reading speed.

          The full report below

          http://firstmonday.org/ojs/index.php/fm/article/view/3340/29…

        • @T1OOO: If carrying textbooks is the biggest soon then a $99 Kindle is much better compared to an iPad

        • @lux:

point was that they are portable like books, coz you kinda need them at your desk to read, not wait to go to the computer lab and load them up there.

        • @merill:

oh please! ofcrouse its different but the actual content is the same,… im sure it was different when reading it of a chalk board vs a white board, and from a rolled scroll to a book, so what? the point is thats the way things are going and the soooner that kids get used to it the better for them to addapt to the world and work force they will be entering,….

        • @merill:

except, that the ipad can do alot more than just load books, it has apps and what not too that are used, imagine if the school needed an ipad AND a ebook reader, and a third device, ud be up in arms…….

anyways, whats this go to do with anything? if it was 1999 id love the ability to get a $500 device to do all this for me, people are just being saggy naggy.

        • @T1OOO: wouldnt take long to load them up.
I honestly don't see the point when you could easily attach another monitor for a fraction of the price? I'm sorry if I come off as rude.

besides, I'm not a hater - I got the iPad at $619 at officeworks for family back then https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/194241

        • +1

@lux: Same here. My 2 boys have had their own iPads since they were four (8 & 9 now). They only get to use during weekends and school holidays and make sure they use it healthily (minecraft and other games that make them think). Watching YouTube videos is limited.
What I've come to realize is that the books I read as a kid I cherish to this day. Each book left a unique fingerprint on me and I can trace my memory back to the size of each book, the smell the type of paper, the edges of the book etc. With the books that I've read on Kindle that type of long term memory has not been created. With a lot of the books that I've read on Kindle and my phone (yes I read a lot of books on my phone)it's very hard to remember them in the same fond way. Heck I can even remember some of my school textbooks that have heavily influenced me.
I would rather have my children use a PC/laptop where they can code, build and create things. The iPad unfortunately is more a consumer device and is not something the schools should be pushing.

  • Yes for me it's a private school but not all private schools are demanding kids have iPad's. My kids school is rolling out the iPad programme next year. Basically told if your child doesn't have one it's you fault they'll be missing out!

    • and I'm a single wage earner so for me it's a huge outlay having to buy both an iPad Air 2 and a Macbook Air (for primary school and high school). Sucks!

      • +7

That's pretty harsh. I can understand an iPad is the necessary tablet due to the range of apps available. But why should a school demand a MacBook Air when there are countless other much cheaper laptop alternatives?!

  • +1

wow..so I was just getting the Officeworks web open and ready to call DJ and ask them if they can confirm a price match but the OW website is now showing no stock at all of the Ipad Air 2 64GB anywhere in Melbourne. I called up a couple of stores and they helped me check on their system and it also shows nothing other than the 16GB and the 128GB :(:(

  • I also had to purchase iPad Air 2 Wifi 64GB for my daughter for school. I purchased Gold one from Office Works for $687 on boxing day. Very happy with deal. I contacted apple store to see if they could match but their best price was $746. I would definitely get it from Office Works before the rest of the school community heads there as well. Good luck.

  • Officeworks WA seems to have stock.

    • As do Sydney stores according to their site, but I was told they do not send inter state between stores

  • +3

Can someone explain this iPad programme thing? Is this just private wankery or is it everywhere? Why are schools imposing on parents to buy their kids tablets, and specific branded tablets at that? And if it is for education purposes why doesn't Apple offer some reduced price?

    Seems dodgy as.

    • I believe many schools are rolling this out and doing away with books almost altogether.. So you're not required to buy physical books (as many as previously) and the program is rolled over a few years. So the idea is to buy a device with as much space as affordable and the books are deployed via the school intranet to the device…

Books were basically the same cost as an iPad so its swings and roundabouts…

      • Juddy, As mentioned above by sed8ed, apparently there are potential cost saving by using electronic format of various books according to the school in addition to being able to do other interactive activities through various apps. I have also seen some schools allowing parents to contact their child's teacher through their school communication app. My kids' school do have an apparently 'discounted' rate for these via jb hifi however when I compared the prices, they were still considerably higher than officeworks so shopping around does have its benefits.

Ps: if anyone's still looking for one, I just managed to get a 64GB ipad air 2 from OW Yarraville. They still have a gold one I believe.

        • Are you getting free textbooks or apps from the school/iPad programme? Considering how much of a money-maker textbooks are I doubt they are giving them away for free. You'd be saving nothing.

I'm not trying to be a Luddite, tech is a part of the education system now, but it is a considerable outlay of money for parents.

        • +4

No offence to you but if you need one of the most expensive tablets to act as a glorified pdf reader that easily could be done with devices that are pretty much half the price, I think the system is flawed.

Not even going for a typical "why Apple when" response, textbooks would easily be readable on many older generation ipad. 3rd generation onward has really good resolution. I've used many device I owned for studying including a laptop from compaq to surface Pro 3. I am used to using technology for learning. That said this whole stupidity with requiring $500-600 device will only be widening the gap between the classes.

        • +1

@Oversimplified: At my kids primary school they have a BYOD program, and you can bring any tablet you like provided you can run the listed apps, which they provide for IOS and Android. I don't think they list windows versions, but so far all required apps have had free versions.

The kids bring a mixture of android and ipads.

        • @natslovR:

My daughters school tried this and found the classes constantly disrupted with app issues and varying issues because of the sheer number of different android devices teachers had to troubleshoot. The next year it was decided to switch to only iPads for the BYOD program and everything ran so much better in class.

We raised enough money to have about 3 iPads per class to cover kids who didn't have one or forgot theirs from time to time but after a while I think almost all kids had brought their own.

Personally I use an android tablet at home but I cannot knock the benefits I've seen from the switch to iPad only in class.

        • @natslovR: Eh, I personally am against all form of things that adds cost to the education. Govt. should not add more cost to the education, but rather, try to eliminate the cost as much as possible. Yes, I am arguing that government should've gone for cheaper, if not free textbook, or should've supplied devices to the classes.

Education is considered to be a positive externality to the society for many reasons. Education is also one of the easy way for higher income. Making it harder for poor people to attain it is only going to reduce the stability of the society and make Australia worse off. Technology in education do have its benefits, which I do not disagree with, however if it makes it expensive for someone to gain access to it… I personally don't see it being any good for the society.

      • except a book doesn't smash into a million bits when you drop it.

Costco have ipad air 2 64GB for $680.

  • Thanks for the info, I've been looking at getting an iPad and the info in this thread has been helpful! Cheers!

    • always check the apple refub store. it is normally the cheapest way to get good apple gear. it won't come in the pretty box but has all the apple warrantys

    • +4

I saved over $160 today just by shopping around. Thanks to all the posters who helped me save some money.

    • +1

No they aren't. The iPad Air 2 64gb wifi is over $800 from Apple, is $798 at dick smith, was recently $748 and has been $687 at office works for a few months now.

I got David jones Sydney city to price match office works a month or so back, but only after they rung around a few stores to make sure they had one in stock.

    • Are you new here?

  • +2

I would usually agree however the difference between OW's price of the Ipad Air 2 64GB (not sure about other sizes as I've strictly been looking at this) and other apple authorised retailers including the apple store is $142 ($829 - $687). I dont know about you but I can spend that $142 difference elsewhere as it is still a considerable difference than just blindly purchasing it at the other retailers. Plus the thread was to check if there was any other deals that could be better than what I''ve found ie. DJ gift card or Costco however with the limited time that I have to claim for TRS and no Costco membership, I went with OW.

  • Just bought one from Officeworks in WA. I had another discount card I was able to use so I was lucky to get the cost down to approx $650. Now to find a decent case/cover !

  • They have pendo pads on special at Office Works and I doubt the teachers would have a clue what the difference is or even notice.

  • +2

$629 on the apple refub site. comes fully refurbished by apple with the standard warranty. i would reccomend this for all apple gear. just be aware stock levels can fluctuate.

    • And claim TRS afterwards.

I bought a refurb iPad before. I think they change the aluminium case and the battery so it pretty much feels like new.

  • +2

Just my personal idea, if the school want to push the so called ipad program, they should provide ipad free (cheap refurbished old model is good enough). Besides, apple should sponsor this program as they are actually educating their future customers by instilling the superiority of idevices to the kids.

    • for kids without a device they can use the school. each clas has half a dozen for kids without or kids that forgot to bring it. no problemo

  • +1

it's not the hatdware but more so IOS.. a lot of the best education apps are only on IOS and about 50% of the ones we are required to download immediately are paid apps. Quite cheap but brilliant. Our school does not force iPads, it just recommends iPads but kuds are welcomed to bring Androids. However my husban teaches at the school and most of the apps he uses are IOS so kids on Androids will be goven something rlse to do. They can still do research, bible, calculator etc but if you are going to buy a device then might aswell buy the one that fulfills their educational requirements.

Some parents givs their kids hand me downs which is also perfectly fine! but some of the new apps need the latest ios version to be compatible so perhaps need to upgrade ios. The recommendation fof ipad air 2 is purely because they know that it will be fine for all the apps.

    • +1

Reads like you wrote that on an ipud

      • haha on my phone! sorry

  • +3

I pity the parents who are forced/blackmailed into buying iPads and Mac Air for their kids education.
Surely there must be other alternatives.
    1. Computer lab in school?
    2. Why iPad and Mac Air? Are schools paid by Apple to promote their products? Androids and Chromebook can do as good a job at a fraction of the price.

    • I'm just speculating but the computer labs would only be able to accomodate 1 class at a single session vs everyone owning an ipad which can be used within each classroom.
as for why Ipad and Macbooks vs alternatives, the former is probably due to the discounted school apps that they can apparently deploy to the ipads and I get that but I do curiously question why Macbooks as well…

      • Nowadays even a sub-100 tablet can be used to watch videos, browse the web & run apps.
Chromebooks are used by corporations like Woolies. Surely we are not saying a kid's school apps need so much firepower???
surely these apps can be run off the browser as well…being the cynic, can't help wondering who benefits from the 'discounted' school apps.

    • our school gets nothing out of it. some schools requires you to purchase lap top from them and upgrade every yr. every kid has the same laptop with full warranty and support. any problems will be replaced immediately. but its called technology fee and is$1k a year. No Thanks! especially with 3 kids.. ipad anyday.

  • Recommend IPAD AIR 32GB, if you can find them…. No huge differemce between AIR 1 and Air 2… Been using it over a year, no drama. Bought mine for 469

    • Main difference is double the RAM in the 2, plus split screen multitasking only supported in the 2

    • +1

Faster processor, faster co-processor, more memory, split screen multi tasking, finger print sensor etc etc. I just recently upgraded from Air 1 to Air 2 and it is noticeably faster. It will also last longer than an iPad Air 1 (as a general rule).

The $687 for 64GB iPad Air 2 from Officworks is a great deal.

  • tell your kids school they are morons and ought to have introduced a chromebook system. looks like whoever pushed for an ipad scheme is a total butt junkie for apple

  • Write them a nice and long letter, asking them why they think they can justify asking parents to fork out $$ for a iPad and pointing out there are other cost effective solutions.

  • Hi why can't they use a Mini 4?

    • the mini is by no means not allowed at my kids' school but whilst the internals are speedy enough and will last a while before being obsolete in the ios upgrade cycle, some apps that the school will be deploying will essentially be easier to use with a larger screen size hence why the full sized ipad is recommended.

      • I see. Small fingers easier touch targets :)

Joys of schooling. Far easier when I was in school.

      • I've seen a lot of students get very frustrated when their parents have bought an iPad Mini for their BYOT (and I feel bad for the parents!).

True, the iPad Mini runs all the same apps, but in terms of usability (including typing into Pages), it can slow the kids down and make things that little bit more difficult than they need to be.

  • +1

    re: why iPad?
Can you imagine a technophobe teacher trying to upgrade some kid's $34 Android tablet from Gingerbread to Ice Cream Sandwich just so they can use an app? While the rest of the classroom stares at the wall.
I remember my typing teacher evacuating our classroom because of a "floating toolbar virus" in Word 6.0 (ie. where you undock toolbar icons by just dragging them off the toolbar). Hmmm.
Ain't nobody got time for that!

    • As mentioned above, you give the kids a list of apps that are available on both iOS and Android and the requirement is that the tablet must be able to run those apps. Of course the teacher should not have to upgrade the OS on a tablet.

  • https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/228001. IPad Air 2 for $404 at Good Guys Ebay

    • That is the original ipad air, not the air 2 :)

  • Hey guys can anyone tell me what the perks of buying it from office works would be?

Im looking at eBay and kogan has it for 741.51 which will go down to about 600 after the 15%+4% (eBay + cash rewards) deal.
Big W has it for 798 going down to 646.40 using the same deal as above.

Im thinking of buying them from kogan. Good idea or no?

    • +1

If Im not mistaken Kogan's apple products are grey imports ie. Hong Kong imports. Not good if youre planning to claim TRS as there will be no tax invoice but Big W's should be fine. Regardless of this though, ive heard previous stories about Kogan's apple product's warranty through Apple Aus and theyve been a hit and miss although apparently ipads should be covered whilst not iphones. Plenty of articles to read on whirlpool however purchasing from Big W should be a lot less hassle.

I was fortunate to be in school when Kevin Rudd rolled out the free laptops to high school kids. We all got Apple Macs. I must say, it certainly changed my way of learning. We were able to achieve so much more with access to internet in every class, and the ability to create things using Garage Band and Photo Booth.

However i do have many memories of my friends and i sneaking on blocked websites and taking photos on Photo Booth all class. It definitely comes at a price.

So i can see how beneficial a laptop is for a student in high school. Whether it is a mac or not. Its steep to ask every student to have a Mac though - since they are very pricy compared with other PCs.

Ipads on the other hand are useless. I have one, which i would take to uni, and i lasted 1 term. It was too difficult to type, and just was not efficient. It does not have the same capabilities as a laptop. Now the only time i ever use my Ipad is when i am travelling.

Unfortunately our daughter's school asked for an IPad in year 7. One year later they have asked us to get a high tech laptop (at least 4gb ram, WiFi at etc). I was quite angry about it as asking for a Full sized iPad and one year later it's asking for yet again another gadget. We bought her a MacBook Air hoping it'll last her at least up to y12. I hope your school is not going to ask you to upgrade again next year.

    • Im in a position where my daughter's current school is rolling out the ipad program bext year but the year after, she will be going to a different school which would require a macbook. Similar to your situation and my only consolation is that ipads hold their value somewhat so I will ask her to take as good care of the ipad as possible to hopefully get something back for the macbook

  • +1

my sister in SA, went to a private school and that school requires you to use a macbook air. However, they rent it out to students (yearly fee), and their macbook airs were pre installed with all the programs the school uses and had obvious parental locks on it. They also update the software whenever there is new software available.

I think if a school is to enforce the use of ipads or macbook airs they should provide it at a yearly fee as my sisters school has done. saves the trouble of you buying one, also with high school in SA being 5 years (year 8 to 12) its alot more worth it to just rent their laptops and buy one for your child when they need it in university as technology is always updating so quick.

  • seriously an ipad??? what a waist of money, Im sure you can get a surface 3 (atom version) for around the same price. At least they can use it not only for apps but an actual 2 in one laptop than add an mac air. I would refuse!
