iPad Air 2 64GB

hey OZB, I need to purchase a full sized Ipad (not the mini) for my son to use at school as they've just started the Ipad program next year and hence I'm looking at getting the Ipad Air 2 64GB. I was holding off on purchasing one until around boxing day just in case of any deals but I haven't seen any pop up other than the ipad mini 3 clearance at DSE.

The cheapest I can find so far for the spec at a brick and mortar store is at Officeworks for $687 and I'm going on a short overseas trip shortly so looking at claiming back GST through TRS as well and potentially reducing this to $600.30. Does anyone have a better recommendation or would this really be the best deal that I can get at this stage?

Thanks

The schools have been sucked in by apple to use iPads. The teachers will not help your kid to setup a different device and support with alternative apps.

seriously an ipad??? what a waist of money,

Perhaps using an iPad will teach them how to spell?

  • BTW, there is no requirement to bring a full sized iPad. My kid's class has a lot of kids with the smaller iPad.

Find a friend whose company allows salary sacrifice On iPads and try to negotiate a deal with them. Win win.

You also need to factor safety of the kid when carting the iPad to school on a daily basis if your kid walk or rides to the school.

    • BTW if they plan on using it for NAPLAN 2017 they need a full sized iPad.

That may be the case for your kids, but many other schools set a minimum requirement that must be met.

I have twins now going to year 11, I had to buy two iPads this year i just went to my local good guys and they matched the Office works Price (64 GB Gold)
I paid them with TGG Gift cards bought for 5% discount from work

I wonder how much of a kick back these schools are getting from Apple? Or maybe just the administrator that brain-farted these Apple programs into existence.

Show me something a school kid will need to do that can't be done on my a Chuwi Hi8, at a fifth of the price…

Don't know why you got down voted. It's appalling that schools are wasting so much money on IT when it's useless or out of date by the time the kids leave school.

If anything, they should have moved to Chromebooks like US schools are. They are infinitely easier to deploy at scale, better for collaboration, more affordable and are simply a better product for education.

The reason is because they can't have every kid in the school rocking up with their own tablet. At least the school can now set a spec of 'iPad 2' and know every kid is going to arrive with the same thing.

If the kid needs help, the teacher and IT Support have to be able to provide it. This becomes multiple times harder if every kid brings their own yum cha brand tablet their parents bought them from eBay. Also, as the teacher is giving instructions during class, the kids can follow along exactly what the teacher is doing.

It's probably not the case now as app development has come along way, but in the early days most of the apps were available only on the iPad, which mean Apple further cemented their ground as the default choice.

At least now there are cheaper options around. When I went through school my parents had to pay nearly $3k for the 'laptop program' as the laptops were sourced by the school then all sorts of warranty/insurance fees stacked on top to cover repairs etc. This lasted for three years (years 7-9) in which case you could choose to keep the laptop to finish off VCE, or take out another $3k 'laptop program' for VCE. Of course the school made a big push about, "making sure your student had the best technology to give them the best 'edge' at VCE", so of course everyone took out another lease.
I'm thankful that when my kids hit that age all I'll need to fork out for is an iPad (or Surface) for under $1k. I'm not sure what the lifespan is on the iPads - I don't know if they buy an iPad 2 at year 7 and if that is supposed to see them through for all of high school?

I'm not suggesting every kid rock up to school with something different. But expecting parents to fork out $600 on something that has a 50/50 chance of getting lost, smashed or stolen within 12 months is insane. We're talking about kids here after all.

Nominate a single android model tablet or chromebook at an affordable price, which will do everything an Ipad can, and all of sudden you'll have higher participation (less kids will miss out because mum and dad just can't afford Apple's price tag), and less thefts (they aren't worth as much). Parents will be happier with more money in their pockets as well. It's just common sense.

Call me cynical, but someone somewhere is getting a kickback to implement this Apple shit. It's basically just indoctrinating children into believing they need to buy Apple products under the guise of education. Which is exactly the kind of despicable shit I'd expect Apple to come up with (based on their past exploits, which any well read person should be aware of).

I guess there are some practical applications for using an iPad.

Instead of having once a week computer lesson they have ubiquitous access. For any 'teaching tool' to be effective it needs to be as responsive as picking up a pen or a ruler.

For example, in Geography a student can explore another country by actually 'visiting' it with street view and augmented reality. Drawing a comparison between, say, an Australian landscape and Antarctic can be much more engaging using Google Earth over a video or OHT.

In Mathematics students can use their iPad to code robots to prove mathematical equations (i.e. measuring angles, perimeter, area etc).

In HPE students can capture theirs and others performances and compare it to elite athletes.

Students can easily capture samples of their 'offline' and 'online' work and store it in a digital portfolio. Quality and timely feedback is proven to have one of the largest impacts on student progress. Using an iPad a teacher can easily annotate a student's work with voice, drawing, text and even movie in a quick and easy way. This can then be shared back to the student and their parents. Likewise this data can also be used to track the effect the feedback is having on the student's progress to keep the teacher accountable.

People were saying the same things when slates were introduced, similarly for blackboards, whiteboards, OHT, projectors, interactive whiteboards, computers, calculators etc. I couldn't imagine a school without digitally enriched learning.

Each to their own though. If I had the choice I would push for more technology and more PD provided to teachers (rather than a lot of the wasted PD hours which do not focus on student learning).

    • Do you work in marketing?

      • Education

    • Isn't using different system also one of the basic skills that everybody should learn nowadays? Why not the teacher and student? You do not need an expensive iPad to learn coding or control the robot. There are also more practical application for using no-apple device. A windows or android device or even Raspberry Pi could also do that with much lower cost and more fun. I feel that all these electronic device if not using properly, they will also cause distraction problems of the kids. Do not rely too much on that. Do not be too lazy. The best way to teach mathematics is not using any device or powerpoint. A Blackboard with chalks and a responsible teacher are still the best tools.

  • If anyone knows a JB HiFi (in brisbane) that will price match Officeworks, please let me know

One important thing to note that probably hasn't been mentioned so far is the cost of replacing screens for the iPad Air 2/3's - as well as the iPad Mini 3/4's (I think).

Apple in their infinite wisdom decided that they didn't want people to be able to replace their broken touch screen/digitizer/glass for cheap, so they decided to glue the LCD and Digitizer together. So now, if you want to replace just the glass, you have to replace the LCD as well. What was once a ~$150 fee for replacing the screen is now easily $300-400+ because of this.

i got Harvey Norman to price match Office Works via Online Chat. And then got the Amex offer - $50 credit for spending $350 https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/226889

Not as good as the DJ 10% gift card but its an alternative.

  • Check out the refurbished page of Apple … they still have the 64GB Air 2 for $629 (meaning the refurbished product was spared from the price increase). TRS also possible. http://www.apple.com/au/shop/browse/home/specialdeals/ipad
