Edox may be on par with Tissot. Despite EDOX having a history (founded in 1884) EDOX as a brand was relaunched some years ago and they are just trying to enter the market again. Their "Proud Heritage" line is promising the "Spirit of Norway" limited edition looks interesting too. To come back they do a lot of sponsoring which the customer will have to pay too when pulling the trigger on an EDOX watch.
As I understood, Edox was bought up by the Swatch group in the 70's when so many Swiss companies were going under during the "Quartz Holocaust"
The brand disappeared as the Swatch group used the company to make watches, especially quartz watches, that were rebranded to other Swatch Group brands. When public interest in mechanicals started rising, Swatch re-released the brand and it's been trying to make a comeback ever since. So Edox has been in continual production— just not always available to the public as "Edox". I think they could be considered now (and back in the 70's) as about on par with Tissot— in quality, if not name brand recoqnition. I have a couple of vintage Edox from the 70's and am impressed by the build quality— still running strong.Build quality, the finish, Swiss (reputation), sapphire crystal.
+1 would say on par with Tissot. plus sapphire crystal.
nice looking watch. pretty good discount too.
Whats Ashford like as a company to deal with (never heard of them)No offence, but for this much you could buy a mechanical watch with sapphire crystal that looks just as good.
This Orient for example:

You really really should not pay over $150 for a Quartz movement.
If you're going to buy an Orient then watch Amazon.com for frequent Orient discount sales .. :-) .. !!
Yep.
Because honestly, what is the difference in buying a $50 to a $300 Quartz movement? You only lose like 25~ seconds a year anyway.
THIS!! I would rather wear an Orient or Seiko auto than an Edox Quartz. I've had an Edox before, I had their offshore powerboat model with the ETA 2824 movement, was a nice reliable watch if not a little generiuc. I ended up flipping mine as I wanted the cash to buy something a bit more exotic.. This model comes in an auto version as well but for a similar style and a bit more money you could get a Tissot Le Locle or a Hamilton Jazzmaster (which I've also had and highly recommend). Either of those options has an ETA or Sellita auto movement and would be a much better buy.
The thing is, what are you buying a quartz watch for? Accuracy? A $25 watch from KMart has decent accuracy, quartz watches lose about 25 seconds per year instead of -5/+8 of low end mechanicals PER DAY.
If you're going for looks, there are cheaper ways than paying $300 for a nice looking watch. There are other great brands that do cheap quartz or even mechanical movements for a lower price, like I posted above, or the Seiko 5 blue dial you posted.
Not sure why I got negged, but this deal pretty much sums up everything OzBargain isn't about, paying through the nose just for a brand. Even if you're not into watches for horology, you can at least appreciate a better deal.
People who dont know watches buy Quartz movements because they are cheap. If you dont really care what is inside, you just like the look or like the brand name on the front then why pay extra for the auto movement.
For those of us that prefer a real watch with an auto movement inside, quality including the internal movement is a major factor. I dont own any quartz watches at all. The knockabout watch that I wear to work in the garden/car etc is a Seiko 5. I have a Seiko Monster that I wear if I am going to the gym etc where I'll be leaving my watch in a bag etc and I have a couple of real swiss (Omega etc) watches that I wear to work. I also have a couple of more exotic autos that I wear socially etc. The thing with auto watches is that if you buy carefully there is always a 2nd hand market for them. I have owned then on-sold a whole series of watches over the years. None of them super expensive but certainly makes the process of buying a new watch cheaper if you can cover 70% of the cost by selling an old one you no longer wear to somebody else as part of the deal.
No idea why you were negged, I gave you a +ve, I assume it was by somebody that doesn't know watches. I am actual;ly amazed we haven't had the usual comments about:
"I can buy a watch for $20 at K Mart, why do I need this", or
"I dont use a watch anymore because I look at the time on my phone"
Nice price for a reputable swiss brand.
Blue Dial Seiko with 21 Jewels Auto Movement $80.62 http://www.skywatches.com.sg/reviews/seiko-5-blue-dial-stain…
Loads of similar Seiko auto models on Skywatches who get a good rep in the watchuseek forums as reliable. There will be a similar model with a white face somewhere on there for around $80. An Edox Quartz is not going to hold much if any value on the 2nd hand market as generally most collectors stay away from Quartz watches. The 'Swiss' heritage is diluted a bit since the internals of the watch are a Quartz movement. If the internals were a Swiss Auto then the movement would make the Edox worth collecting, at the price listed I would buy one just because it was a bargain but not for a Quartz.
Since I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to watches, what exactly am I paying $300 for? The build quality? The brand?
