      It's a Marvel superhero… in a box.

      • They're up to 25 already? Ugh

    • Hearing you… Perhaps the least informative description ever.

Rinnai suggests gas. Who goes next?

  • Thought it was a electric or gas water heater..

Rinnai makes very good gas heaters. But nowadays, you're often better off with a combination of reverse cycle + solar panels (and smartpower if available). But a gas heater like this heats up the place very quickly.

  • Natural gas only?

    • Gas Type: LPG & NG
Are people getting that this is a portable unit ?
Heaters like this are often used in rural areas and run on LPG where no NG is available. Gas outlets are put into rooms and you move the heater around as required. Or you can run off a gas bottle

      • i know exactly what it is, I grew up with hard plumbed NG in Melb, and live with rural LP bottles in Qld.

The box states, NG in large letters, and then at the bottom states ONLY FOR USE WITH NATURAL GAS. Last I checked, and it was a while ago Ill admit, to run an NG product on LP, it needed altering to suit. Stoves, heaters, hot water all required conversion and some could not be converted, or at least converting was cost prohibitive.

Its not universal. I believe there are some places in Aus that have remote NG to a township etc so would work fine for them, the rest will need to factor in conversion costs, or risk it. I think parts of Vic when they sold off the Gas and Fuel Corp were promised NG plumbed to rural homes at decent prices, in the end it was done as a large town NG tank, kept full by regular truck deliveries.

    • As other posters have stated it depends on stock if it clearly marked NG then you would think that version is just supporting Natural Gas. If you find one with LPG marked then you would think it would support it. I don't understand the 'portable' aspect of this… Do people buy gas bottles specifically for these. I'd imagine they would cost a fair bit to replace/refill. I have a gas outlet in my living room but this heater confuses me. I understand the Granada ones because you plug the hose direct to the outlet but what does 'portable' mean? Just not affixed to a wall? Does that mean all stand alone heaters are 'portable'?

no, these have a lot of electronics inside (microprocessors and sensors) so they burn clean, you don't need a flue …….. carbon monoxide poisoning issues overcome unless electronics fail. ……….

Surprised David Jones have this sort of stuff, would have expected this at masters or bunnings, what's next, on demand hot water units at DJ.

  • Wow this won't be very efficient - it's electric and gas - it's like a gas heater with a built in fan heater (2000w).

I'd much rather spend the money on installing a split system air con - get cooling in summer, much more efficient heating in winter (especially as this is a gas heater combined with a fan heater), the air con will be much much lower running costs even without solar power.

On top of that, there's issues if this heater isn't flued - I would never run one in my house, why risk the fumes and moisture content when I can just run a split system that creates none of that.

    • We used to have a unit like this. They are great for warming up the house quickly, but yeah, keep in mind that portable (unflued) heaters like this are banned in some states.

Derr - that's the whole idea. 7kW of gas heat ( the maximum possible from unflued) plus an additional 2kW of electric at startup = amazing boost of grunt. The electric heater is only used for short periods, when you need warmth like now

I'd much rather spend the money on installing a split system air con - get cooling in summer, much more efficient heating in winter

No, you won't necessarily. Air cond is a heat pump, so they work less and less well as the temperatures drop.

Nevertheless, a RC A/C of similar capacity is much more expensive, and is not protable. So, excellent if you have a climate where coolness is more prevalent than summer heat. This is great for renters too, and so much nicer than Air Cond.

We have both - and I can assure you that the gas heater wins every time in winter, due to the instant way that it works, and the "feeling of the warmth" that it creates.

On top of that, there's issues if this heater isn't flued - I would never run one in my house, why risk the fumes and moisture content

The whole idea is that it's unflued. That's what makes it portable. Your opinion about portable gas heaters seems to be based largely around an ignorance about the way these work, and their safety etc.

Think cordless phone or mobile phone vs fixed, hard-wired telephone. Perhaps the cordless and mobile have inferior audio quality under some circumstances, but that's not the point.

  • Always price check, rather that simply relying on apparent discounts. When we bought gas appliances we found that small places like Bexley Appliances had far better deals on new stuff. That's the kind of store where I bought our gas heaters, as well as instantaneous gas hot water.

Also remember Gumtree and Ebay. Especially in summer there is excellent value in new, as-new and slightly used appliances like this. Since they tend to be just places and used, it's unlikely that thers will be physical damage if the prior owners were careful. There's little that can go wrong in these for the first 5 years at least, so buying used is often very viable.

  • What's the rrp on these things?
