  • This one has an AC adapter not USB powered.
Transferring 2TB of data would take forever. I wish they'd hurry up and release the USB 3.0 ones…. 10 times faster than USB 2.0.
But probably still a good deal for many :)

All external 3.5" drives require an AC adapter.
Unfortunately the write speed of the drive would prevent a USB 3.0 drive from performing 10x better than a USB 2.0.

      • +1

      • Oh well… 4 times faster then (148mb/s vs. 35mb/s) according to WD labs.

SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface - Accelerate your data transfers with the fastest available interface. Transfer a 24 GB HD movie in 2.7 minutes vs. 11.3 minutes with a 2.0 connection.

RRP US$279 means what here :P

  • Im looking to get a new hdd but not sure what to go for. The 2TB seems not a bad price now but as fasr as usb powered vs ac power? Im not really sure if I will notice the difference if Im doing everyday stuff. Any suggestions?

    • +1

Even though Ac power, the usb 2.0 port will still harness it's full speed. It just needs wall power to run it as it is a 3.5" drive, only 2.5" drives use usb power, and take up ports. If you need a portable drive that will use power from you laptop then this wont help you, but if you need large space and dont mind plugging in to a wall than this is perfect, fast enough for video, and fast transfer speeds, I also recommend Western Digital over any other branded drive. They have been the best!

Good price, though I wouldn't buy one personally. Not to single out this deal, but in general I have these issues with preassembled external drives:

    1) if the power supply dies, you can't get access to the data without voiding the warranty unless you first to get permission from WD to disassemble the case.

    2) if you want to upgrade the enclosure to an eSATA or USB 3.0 case at some stage, you void the drive's warranty.

    3) if you're a laptop-only household and want to gain temporary access to a different 3.5" drive (e.g. after its external case stopped functioning) you can't use the WD's case for that without voiding its warranty.

    4) if you want to upgrade a laptop's hard drive and need to access to the data on the old one after it's been removed, you can't use this case for that without voiding the warranty.

Not that such things apply to everyone, but over the years, their inflexibility has been a big enough pain in the butt for me that it's become a pet peeve :)

A bare drive and decent enclosure will set you back about $250-260.

    • Not sure about you but all the previous ones I have bought requiring assembling as per your suggestion seems to result with issues with delayed write failures, ie. both 2.5 and 3.5 versions…so these days something preassembled like these WD models are worth the bit of extra money with less/ no issues…

    • These have external DC adaptor as far as I can remember, not internal power supply.

These drives are aimed more at a user than a tech savvy person
They are never intended to be opened up and tinkered with.

If you want that functionality, you can buy a case and a drive seperately and make it up - not everyone can do this.

These are a fantastic drive (I have 500gb one) tough, reliable and perfect addition to a PC, PS3 or a laptop
It is fast enough to stream blu ray data streams to a PS3 or PC.

It can be used for backups as well, thats what I use mine for and it hasnt missed a beat.

Only thing that I can think of that lets it down is that it is slow, but no slower than any usb 2.0 drive out there.

      • I meant power supply in the generic sense with no external/internal distinction. Point was their failure is not an uncommon problem:

It's an issue for the less tech savvy too. If I have a mate whose external drive's adaptor died and he wants me to help access the data while waiting for the manufacturer to respond, I can't do anything for him if its a preassembled external drive (unless he wants to void the warranty, and in some instances ruin the case as well because some models are practically impossible to open without causing damage).

Good price, but eSata should really be standard on 3.5" external drives, would make this far more appealing to have internal drive speeds on an external enclosure.

    • +1

Should be a standard connection option, yes. But if they started selling drives with only eSATA, I wouldn't be buying any… Being limited to only eSATA would be a step backwards, as USB is far more prevalent than eSATA.

Was it really necessary to make the storage information big and bold?

    • That's a real funny comment, surprisingly it did it by itself I dont really know how it became big and bold.

      • the # beforehand set the font to a larger type, removed these and it reverted back to normal

  • +1 from me, great find!

The 1TB version of this is excellent!! its really quiet and stores movies jus great :)
These things are really cheap these days.. bought my 1TB for $219 7months ago!
