Need Help with E-Bay Sale -Buyer Claimed Unauthorised Access after I Sent Him The CD Key

So I had a spare Fallout 4 key up for sale and this guy bought it and I received Instant payment from paypal. SO I sent him a Message VIA e bay which included a scan of the cd key. A few hours later I get a email from ebay saying that the buyer did not authorise it, today I have my funds on hold by paypal for the same reason.

what to do? First time it ever happened since 2011 but I guess it was inevitable….That is so dodgy. He has 40 positive ratings.

So basically I can Claim UA on anything I buy after receiving them and get my money back..

  • I'm pretty sure you got shafted. That's poor form of the buyer/scammer.

Paypal protection does not cover digital content. e.g. video game keys or bitcoins. Sorry bud you're out of luck.

    • Doesn't that apply to the guy as well then ? I have his name and address, will probably get some help from my Uni's legal action services. He made a mistake using paypal, Unless the address was not his.

I have an eBay store which i've run for the past 9 years and i've seen my fair share of dodgey people, this is all from personal experience but as a seller you have about as much rights as a house brick on eBay.

        • I sold a couple of spare game code I had on e bay and they were all smooth. Thi is the first time a buyer actually tried to scam me. I had had a hacked account buy my iPhone but I never got the payment so they got cancelled, But really no coincidence that both his Paypal and ebay accounts were UA. When I try using paypal with a VPN to buy stuff paypal asks me for a security code , that's sent to my phone number..There is no way this guy had both of his accounts hacked.

I might just get my University Legal services to help me out since they are free. He made a mistake using his real name and addresses..
I also contacted steam and reported the key stolen. Hopefully they deactivate it. I have the physical receipts and stuff.

        • Yeah it usually takes us about 2-3 attempts at selling iPhones. I really hate when I upgrade now! Always someone overseas (even though we specify no international), then someone who doesn't respond, then someone who wants to pay in instalments.. ugh.

Best of luck, if you can get the Uni to help you out that's awesome! Use all the resources you can!

          @Ryxxi:

          Likely fake name and address.

I wouldn't waste my time or the Uni legal services time. Instead spend 5 mins opening a FOS dispute (https://www.fos.org.au/) against PayPal and you will have your money back in under 48 hours.

        • @PBG: Thanks I did, Well paypal just refunded his money back to him today and they are closed. They gave me no information or anything, just a e mail saying my case is closed..

        • @Ryxxi: FOS gave Paypal upto 29th jan to respond, so def wont be 48 hours.

        • @Ryxxi: you may be surprised, PayPal are scared of FOS. Things could be decided earlier (mine were). Good luck with it all

@PBG: Tried to get steam to deactivate the key by showing my physical invoice and purchase receipt but they wouldn't. I wonder how all the cd key sellers manager to not go broke with paypal when they cant deactivate the keys.

@Ryxxi: alright paypal gave me the money back because I opened a case with the FOS..

  • Unfortunately it happened to me too a few years ago. I sold some top up vouchers and emailed. Buyer pretended unauthorized and I got charged back. Let's hope the scammer will use the money to buy medicines in the future. That's what I wished to my scammer.
