  • Buggah, cost me $80 4 weeks ago. Still, I wanted it then.

One good thing about this model is that it has an headphone output (not input as stated) socket and you can connect it to your hifi amp. Good sound quality and definitely better than an analog AM tuner.

    • FM is still better sound quality than the both of them ;)

      • Of course, that's to be expected. But there are programs that are only available on AM.

  • a bit confused here , can it play AM ?
If so , is AM digital ?
    Thank

In DAB+ the sound is encoded digitally first before transmission. This means it's resistant to the kind of interference that you get with an analog AM radio.

But I think what you really want to know is whether you can get your favourite AM stations on a DAB+ radio. Yes, they are generally broadcast in DAB+ also. In fact when you turn on a DAB+ radio, it does a scan for available channels and then you can select them, assign them to presets, etc.

The channels available to me where I live include RN, ABC DIG, Jazz, 704, and the commercial stations. You should check

      http://www.digitalradioplus.com.au/

to see what's available in your area.

Here's the full explanation of DAB and DAB+ if you want the gory details.

I bought one in November and took it back the next day. Reception and sound were lousy. The sound was worse than a $10 AM radio.

    • Models differ in quality, it's not the DAB+ transmission technology that's to blame. This Kaiserbaas model is fine, only limited by the small internal speaker. I don't have any external antenna connected to it, only using the telescopic aerial on the unit, and it's indoors. As I have said, I have mine connected to an amp and it sounds good. But by all means take this one back if you don't like the sound or the reception is poor in your area; that can happen too. Or go to a nearby DSE to listen to the demo model.

And no I don't work for DSE or own any shares in it. I've wanted for a while a DAB+ radio to timeshift AM programs for listening later and I'm satisfied with this model. Only drawback for me is if I have a power cut at my place it will turn off and not turn on again, but I know how to fix that, if I'm willing to open the unit and void the warranty.

      • how do you timeshift with this unit?

        • It's connected to my computer's sound card and I record the program on my computer and generate a MP3 file to listen to later. What do you expect for $68? ;)

          • @retiredfeline: Why not just podcast.. Sounds like you like ABC radio who podcast pretty much everything!

            • +1

@ESEMCE: Firstly it would cost me download quota to fetch them. Second I would have to screen scrape the web page to get the URL when a new program comes out. Thirdly for some programs there are no podcasts but you can get streaming, which you can capture though but with a bit more hassle to follow the links. Fourthly for some programs there is neither podcast nor streaming audio.

My scheduled tasks just run by themselves without any attention from me and the MP3s are left behind in the directory when the conversion is done.

    • Your unit must have been a dud or you live on the outskirts of the coverage area, robbiequinn.

I bought one in January and absolutely love it. Crystal clear, much better than FM radio. (I'm 25km away from Brisbane CBD)

  • Separately, I wonder why all these digital radios tend to be big (It's certainly not just because of the average speakers). I thought digital technology meant it could be smaller - Can't see a 1970's style pocket radio any time soon! …and why cant they build some models with analogue AM/FM as backup given the components <$5?! Anyway it's good to seem them coming down in price.

    • Maybe it's to make people feel they are getting something substantial for their money. This one's very light as are the other portables. There must be only a few chips inside. I know DAB+ tuners are also available as USB dongles so the chips don't take up much room.

Personally I think they are overpriced and can only come down in price with mass production. So if you think DAB+ radios are overpriced, just wait. Mark my words, one day you'll be buying them in variety stores.

    • I thought this as well, but there are now smaller devices available, and they don't look retro either: e.g. http://www.minidisc.com.au/cowon-iaudio-d2-plus-4gb-black-da…

      Somewhat expensive though.

  • ages ago a table AM radio was the size of a toaster oven and a family could only afford one as it cost a week's wages

i threw out a radio powered by a single AA that i got as a freebie

i can't think of why i would want a digital radio

do i want to hear kyle and jackie o clearer?

    • Yeah, I've read a lot of feedback around and it'd be much better for home-use (i.e. most individual's purposes) to use internet or a wifi radio. A DAB+ headunit for cars may be something that'd be more significant to people (where these other options are not available)

    • My sympathies for you if you think that Kyle and Jackie (who?) are the only thing on AM. :)

There is a lot of stuff on ABC stations. Speech programs may not benefit audibly, but I enjoy hearing Daily Planet or Music Deli with higher fidelity.

As for Internet radio, not everybody wants to spend their download quota on radio when DAB+ is literally free-to-air, and works whether or not your Internet connection is up.

There's another benefit over analog AM and that is you get sideband info such as program and track names, weather forecasts, etc, on the LCD display.

  • Also dont forget the new channels on digital (gorilla, nova nation, radar etc..)

  • I'll buy a DAB+ radio when they start to all come out with pause/rewind. I think only one or two brands like Pure have implemented that feature.

  • FYI DSE now haggle with prices !! :) yey!! its a new thing for them! but its official

    • haggling at DSE is not new.. especially with items costing more than $100. But most of their prices are pretty fitting anyway. It's like at Hardly Normals; haggling is expected but most customers buy sticker price (along with extra warranty, offcourse!)

  • still good? Looking at this being the cheapest. So not expecting much for quality.
