  • It seems the Qantas sub $1000 fares to LA return have expired, since yesterday, now $1800 or so… making this exceptionally good value.

  • Great price! Do you know if it can be purchased with the flight starting from LA?

    LA-SYD-LA

    • Doesn't look like it, the 'promo' label doesn't apply to fares when searching fares originating in LA

  • great price, almost offsets the exchange rate…

    Serious question

As someone who doesn't know jack about LA, why should someone go?

It's not like SEAsia where is cheap I presume… So why?

    • La not all that special really. I got board after 3 days. Beverley hills, Santa Monica mahatten beach were cool. But U have to do Vegas tho. 4 hr drive from la. Asia is Different if u don't mind the Poverty along with cheap goods and services.

I got board after 3 days.

What sort of board was it? Surftboard? Skateboard?

        • +1

The type auto correct does. Bored.

    • +2

Because it is the most popular of the 3 main entry points to the USA (SF and Dallas being the other 2). For most LA is not the final destination but a necessary stop on the way.

I personally quite like LA but many don't. Each to their own.

Travel isn't always about going to the cheapest place.

      • +1

It's cheaper than any place ull go in Australia. Food accommodation entertainment tourist attraction, even with the exchange rate stack up way better

      • He probably means where the ganja is cheap!

    • 1 Get shot

2 See traffic even worse then your own city

3 Have a photo in front of the welcome to sign

      ?????

      Profit!

      • -4

Pfft. Can get shot just as easily is Australia. Been to western Sydney lately.. The traffic pretty shitty there too!

      • +9

i nearly shot myself due to the traffic

    • +4

you dont go somewhere cos its cheap? you go to enjoy it.
otherwise just goto india, check into a 2 dollar dorm, and eat rice for a month
usa is awesome, heaps of sport, stuff to see,

      • U do if ur a student backpacker on a centrellnk budget lol which is probably what the original poster is

        • yeh i have staued in a 69c a night basement in bangkok, pretty sure is 2 dollars now tho

        • Ha student (parent) on Centrelink, but close!

        • yeh around $100 a fortnight off lol

    • -3

Not sure why I'm getting thumbed down.

Sounds like it's just a gateway to other better places.

    • LA is not a beautiful place, but it is a very interesting place. Some people like to think of Australia as just a mini USA, but about the only thing LA has in common with us is the language (and even then, half the place speaks Spanish).

As for the States in general, there's heaps to see in the vicinity. San Francisco, Yosemite, Vegas, San Diego/Tijuana, Death Valley. The shopping in LA is great (less so since the AUD hit the skids, but still good), and the Mexican food is cracking.

  • Pretty good price. Remember you can also purchase Virgin gift card from Entertainment Book for 5% off. However, you also risk losing the current fare.

  • i find la horrid, air nz now flys to houston but not sure how much

  • Yeh. We have the curse of having family there so someone has to show up a very now and again. Lived there for a while and really didn't like it, not as a resident or tourist, but some people might like… Disneyland?

  • I really enjoy LA, its all about expectations, so many people going there expect way too much of a city of that size.

  • has anyone bought virgin giftcards via entertainment book before that could comment as to how long it takes for them to be emailed?

    • This is worth a brief read re: one user's experiences

Essentially couldn't use them for 48 hours and took half a day to arrive

  • +1

    TO VEGAS!!!!

    • ~$1300 return from MEL, so longish transit times though.

      • No point buying connecting flights if so expensive: cheaper - and heaps more fun - to make the 4-5 hour drive.

        • +1

Yup. Plenty of stuff to do if you've got some extra time to do a bit of a road trip - Death Valley, Sequoias, Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam… Well worth getting a car for all that. Plus if you plan on spending any time in LA you're gonna want a car for that. God knows how people do LA without a car…

        • @dontpanic: I once used public transport for a day's sightseeing in LA. Took the bus from Hollywood to Santa Monica (changing in some God awful ghetto along the way), ended up taking nearly 2 hours to get there. Took another (shortish) bus to Venice Beach (once is enough - complete hole). From Venice I took the bus into Downtown, think it took another hour and a half (but very scenic - if you've never seen the ghettos before), and Downtown is certainly interesting enough (the Mexican market is very good), even if you have to get the hell out before dark.
Took the metro back to Hollywood, a very fast journey in comparison to the rest of them.

So ended up spending about 4 hours on PT, but was something I was glad to have done.

Picking up a car the next day was a Godsend though. The freeways are great, and there's so much to see.

I think if you've never done LA, you've never done America.

        • @JohnHowardsEyebrows: if you havent gone to watts, and smoked a cigarette on the street at 2am, you havent lived.

  • $860 from Brisbane, not bad at all.

  • Hoping for these prices prices from Melbourne in June.

    • +1

There are some pretty good deals at the moment even for June/July (peak period)

      http://iwantthatflight.com.au/flight.ashx?&oc=MLB&dc=LAX&dd=… - $914 for example.

      Last week I booked
      Melbourne - LA
      Houston - New York
      New York - Melbourne
for $1350 in June/July 2016 which was pretty damn good considering the internal flights and flying out of NY.

  • Worked for 23rd of Jan to 15th March

  • +1

use qantas rewards points, and pay 5.6 USD for all domestic flights

did 4 flights last october for spanking toal of ~30 AUD

    • Not sure what you mean.

Domestic US flights? And the 5.6 is the taxes and fees? How well do the points translate to fares?

      • +1

you can book american airlines / us airways flightsa through qantas page.

        from memory it was

8000 points for miami to atlanta, flights of approx 2hours or less
16000 points from washington to los angeles

        its 5.60 for everything..

there were some combos of airports which it didnt show, which is why i went from washington instead of newark or kennedy, but its worth looking into.

        • +1

          Damn that's good value, thanks.
Qantas points have so little value here with the taxes and fees, plus they don't get you far.
EG. Adelaide to Sydney is 14,000 points plus $38, when a fare alone is $104 (on virgin admittedly)

        • @Hoju: yeh they suck for australian flights.

i used to value the points at 150 = $1, but i think for gift cards its like 177 for $1…

have a play with the qantas web site, if you plan a year ahead and get some good c/c deals, you can make a killing… well save a little.

i did the four flights for 48000 points i think, (2x16000 and 2 x8000), used 40000 for the crown plaza at lax, and got another 80 bucks off a hotel in nashville.

i probly did spend money on stuff i didnt need though on AMEX….

          its a good deal

        • @Hoju: The only value with Qantas points is either with non-Qantas redemptions, and/or business and first redemptions.

So flying Cathay Pacific from Hong Kong will only cost $50 in tax, although a few more points, it's great value. Similarly, Emirates flights not involving Australia (i.e. Qantas codeshare) seem to be taxes only.

Velocity points are far better at most redemptions, and don't attract fuel surcharge.
The only real drawbacks are 1) their networks are smaller (Oneworld really is a great asset for Qantas), and 2) they don't allow first class redemptions, or long haul upgrades, for lowly bronze level frequent flyers (which is most of us points horders here on Ozbargain).

  • LA is a dump. Virgin need to fly BNE - SFO and drop LA

    • LA is a total dump, i grew up in watts county, witnessed my first drive by at 4 years old, lucky my dad wasn't dealing at the time
