hey guys,

with the release of cod and battlefront, my ad700s, antlion mod mic and tb dss2 are no longer feasible for voice chat on the xbox one as the headset adapter only works for headsets, and plugging a mic into it disables voices coming through the tv which cannot be redirected (so i can talk to my friends, but i cannot hear them).

i was about to pull the trigger on these a few days ago but luckily i waited!

the xbox one version (white) retails for $389 at jb hi-fi while the playstation version retails for $349. i'm not sure why there's a price difference between the two.

These are absolutely awful, please do not fall for Astro's marketing. In terms of sound quality, both the headset themself and the mic are terrible, with the only good thing about these being the open-back design and they're quite comfy. The Mixamp is a huge gimmick (unless you really want Optical audio above all else).

There are so many other good headsets around, from companies like Corsair and Kingston. Don't touch these.

I had the 2013 version of these, and they broke after a few months. Got a free swap to 2014 version from JB, broke again after a few months. I convinced the guy there to let me swap them for some real headphones.

the mixamp, or virtual surround is far from a gimmick. being able to pinpoint enemy footsteps in shooters is a godsend. i couldn't go back to gaming without it. plus, the new mixamp pro tr allows you to customise your own eqs, as well as act as a standalone sound card for the pc which is great seeing as i don't have a sound card capable of virtual surround.

i can't speak for the headphones as i've never owned a pair, but we'll see.

      • For it's price? Yep, it's a gimmick. If you want to 'pinpoint enemies', you buy a real surround headset like the Logitech G933 (which not only sound a lot better and have all of Astro's 'features' built in, but are also wireless).

You want an external soundcard instead? You buy a USB one, or DAC.

If you really want the Mixamp features, you buy it seperately and plug a real pair of headphones into it.

But no matter what, I simply can't see the point of buying the Astro A40s themselves.

I personally don't know how you got your headsets to break so easily, but I have both the Astro A40 Gen 2 and Astro A50 Gen 2 and both are still intact, in perfect working condition with everyday use…

The sound quality for gaming is great, I can hear footsteps very distinctly and easily identify which direction it comes from… making it quite immersive to play with on both PC(A40) and PS4(A50).
The mic for me is one of the clearer mics that I have tried.

The versatility of how these headsets can be set up, is pretty incredible as well.

I've tried gaming headsets from Thermaltake, Plantronics, Razer, Turtle Beach and Steelseries. And I find the Astros to be a lot better than the ones I've tried.
Maybe its personal preference maybe not, but for me, these are definitely worth it if you are looking for a quality headset…

I have heard many good things about Kingstons but the connection options for them was what swayed me towards Astros.

      • Well I babied those headsets, so… Yeah

My Sennheiser HD7s, my 9 year old pair of Bose QC3s, and my cheapo $40 Sony headphones are thrown in and out of bags and used constantly and still work good as new, so really a testament to Astro's shoddy build quality, especially when you read the countless complaints online

The mic is absolutely terrible when compared to other headsets, just watch LinusTechTips' review of the A50s. Friends were constantly complaining about the quality when I used it with my Playstations.

I cannot argue with the versatility though, especially A50s.

Those are all pretty awful brands, except the higher end Steelseries are great. Logitech, Audio-Technica, Kingston and Corsair all make great 'gaming' headsets.

And fair enough, I sure miss all the connectivity options

        • do you have Logitech G933? they dont have 7.1 for xbox one or ps4 only PC is that true? so are A50s better or Logitech G933?

        • @shadowrukia: I don't have the G933s myself, no. They have 7.1 for PS4/Xbone as far as I'm aware, and the G933s are much, much better.

This version is the PS4 set. The white set is the XBone set which is the only Astro mix amp that is plug and play with voice chat directly from the Xbone. You can make the Black PS4 set work with the xbone. But it requires a chat cable from the controller to the headset.

In terms of sound quality the Ad700's and Mod mic is a FAR superior setup even without a surround sound processor. What you can do is buy the WHITE Mix amp on its own and it will work with your current headphones and mic since it does all the mixing with the Xbone.

I think you will be really disappointed in the drop in audio quality. And The black PS4 isnt the set you want if you want simplicity/plug and play with the xbone. So if you are set on astros Id hold out for the white ones.

But me I got my a700s a mic and next purchase is the white mix amp. But even just plug directly into the controller has far superior audio quality than any headset I have used. Astros mix amp is amazing. the Headphones not so much.

    • Haven't tried Ad700s, but I've tried other headsets with the mixamp and the result wasn't very appealing
My mate tried his Beyerdynamics MMX300 with the mixamp and didn't like them either.

So it might depend on the headphones you are going to pair them up with…

Just a word of warning for anyone who plans to take this route!

    • oh, i linked the deal to the ps4 version page but bought the white xbox one version.

yeah, i guess i'll give the headset a try and if i don't like it then i'll chuck them up on ebay and keep the mixamp.

      • That's a pretty good idea, good luck!
Keen on trying the TR edition out but still got my A40s and A50s, so probably won't =\

      • Been thinking of doing the same thing. Prices are steep for the mix amp alone. There would be someone willing to drop money on just the headset.
