To heck with it - after reading the previous deal and then finding this cheaper deal via StackSocial, I bit. Got it for US$35.10 using the "FIRST10" discount code. So roughly AUD$48.50 all up.

My plan is to use it to have another offsite backup for my photos. It will not be my only backup of course, but if they hang around for more than a year or two I reckon it will be cheap insurance and I'll be in front. Absolutely it would be even cheaper to just use Amazon glacier directly. Currently that costs $0.012 per GB to backup to Sydney. All up then, 1,000GB would be $12. The trick though is restoration - that costs $0.14 per GB, although the first GB per month is free. IF all my other backups failed and I had to resort to using this to restore all my images, it would take roughly 83 years to copy it out at 1GB per month or $140 to get that 1,000GB out a little quicker…. so for an extra $20 or so I'm getting the ability to copy out as much as I want (within the restrictions of my bandwidth) plus the handy interface with the set and forget backup.

So, installed the client on my mac mini (that's always on), pointed it at the photos directory on my qnap, and it's backing up now!

From the site:
"Store 1 TB of data for life, w/ no additional costs
Quickly & easily select the files you want to store w/ Smart Selection
Retrieve stored files in approximately 3-5 hours
Enjoy great features: backup scheduling, bandwidth throttling, icon overlay, file retention & more
Preview thumbnails of images
Get reliability w/ data stored over multiple facilities & devices"

Mod: Expiry date removed due to StackSocial continually extending their deals past the stated end date.

  • I'm surprised this isn't Lifetime* Storage just like the old Unlimited* internet plans.

    • +1

Then perhaps we can hope this will be the TPG* of cloud storage?

    • I'm actually far more surprised how much their current plans are ($80 per year for one TB - I mean really?). I assume there are people out there who'll sign up for those plans, just like there are people who believe in homeopathy, but still….

By the way, word is that they are fairly strict on content and ownership - http://www.backupreview.com/zoolz-checking-customer-filename….

      • So home photos won't be an issue then. kool

        • Yep. Currently looks like my backup is running at a rate of 1GB per day (Optus cable) but will see how it goes over the next few days!

        • @PlasticSpaceman:

Actually 500mb in an hour now, so not bad at all….

  • Before plonking down money on cloud storage try a free trial to see what your upload speeds are like. On Telstra 30mb cable I cancelled my plan and managed to receive a refund (different provider) when I realized it would take a couple of weeks to upload all of our photos (couple hundred gig… my wife shoots raw but hasn't processed most of them).

    • Agreed. I was pretty confident that the speed would be good enough for me - Optus cable and Amazon in Sydney…. after 4 hours 2Gb has been transferred so at that rate my +500GB (raw here as well) will be sync'd in a month or so. Not amazingly fast, but it's a once off, is cheap, and is not my main/only backup so I'm not in a rush. Once the replication is finished, future updates will of course be much much quicker. :-)

      • FWIW speed seems pretty constant…. realised this morning that there is a 'turbo mode' http://wiki.zoolz.com/smart-mode-and-turbo-mode/) that might enable the backup to go a little faster. As an aside, I also use flickr to backup photos - you get 1TB of space for free, and the T's & C's have been way improved so they are actually acceptable (https://tosdr.org/).
