  Can anyone comment on the recommendations in the guide books?

  I find that most guide books give too much weight to ambiance and service than I prefer.
  I often find myself at well regarded restaurants where the decor is brilliant and the service is attentive but the food is just alright, whereas I prefer a restaurant that the venue is sufficiently maintained with quick and friendly enough service but amazing food.
