  • waa what ?
I bought my AP-300 + 1 Terabyte HDD included for the same price $200
    and that was last year.

you sure this is a bargain ?

    • 3.5" 1TB = 2.5" 500G

      • well…..
the unit is not that heavy with the full 3.5" drive inside.
and it's certainly not slower than the 2.5" drive.

I guess the unit can be slightly smaller with the 2.5" drive inside.
        may be that's the point…..

        • The 3.5" drive is noisier?

        • I think the point is it's portability….I've got one of the tvix 2300 players that get posted here every now and again. I stuck a 320g drive in it. It's only slightly bigger than my 'pocket' 2.5" drive, runs off usb…. so it's easy to take to the pc, friends place, etc etc.

          http://www.oo.com.au/DViCO_TViX-2230_Ultimate_HD_Co_P27061C1…

Whilst not full hd, it is a pvr, which this astone is not…..

Depends what you would want to use it for I guess

    • I personally would say its a bargain. While you can also find similar deals on staticice, this item can play almost everything and portable.

As for AP-300 itself, you probably haven't got this issue, butfor other buyers please do have a read of this thread before deciding.

    • Whats the menu interface like? Simple and easy as others on the market such as PS3, western digital and xbox?

      cheers
      M.

  • i got this offer too in my email lol

dosen't seem like a bargain to me either but to each his own

  • looks good and convinient. I'll wait till these are available for $100.

    • I think you might have to wait for a while :). 500GB 2.5" hard disk alone cost around that price.

  • I always wanted to buy one these media players since my PS3 didn't play some formats and files due to codecs. But ever since I started using PS3MediaServer, the PS3 plays everything I throw at it. I think it was around the Boxing Day period when the PS3 was selling as low as ~$350 with Paypal cashback, I wondered why people would buy this sorta media player if they can afford to spend some more and get the PS3.

I dunno. I'm a student and I love gaming and if it was me paying 200 for this sorta device, I'd rather save some more and get the PS3 which is a media player, has a bluray drive and is an awesome gaming platform and you get to watch 1000s of music videos for free through VidZone on PS3. Plus if you can afford it, you can also get the PlayTV, and record TV shows to the PS3. I dunno.

It all comes down what you want to do with the device and how much you're willing to spend. But if you plan on getting a Bluray player on top of this sorta device and another for recording and yet another for gaming, I think PS3 is more logical in the long run.

Yeh the PS3 is great and all, but for the same money:
      $200 Astone AP-200
$200 Generic all region blu ray player
Hence you will get more codecs and a region free blu ray player

      • +1

Yeah same amount but the PS3 has an inbuilt browser that supports flash and is an awesome gaming platform as well.

  • Can anyone tell me how to these compare (other than the included HDD of course) to the AP-110D's?

  • +2

AP-110D, AP-200 and AP-300 all use the same Realtek chipset inside. The main difference being AP-200 and AP-300 has a internal SATA port inside. However, on AP-200 and AP-300, you can only transfer files to/from your internal hard drive via USB or LAN (but not eSATA).

    Minor issues:
    - None of them decodes/downsamples Dolby Digital TrueHD (so if you want to playback a Blu-ray movie with a TrueHD track - there are a few, and the TrueHD track is normally the English movie audio track), you will need a A/V receiver. May be possible to fix it via firmware update, but unlikely.
    - Some AP-300 owners suffer the infamous file loss issue. A small percentage, but still a concern.
    - Some AP-200 owners have noisy fan issue.
    - Lack of flash memory space (all 3 models) means it is not possible to put A. C. Ryan firmware on any of them.

    Some good bits:
    - They play just about every commonly used file formats.
    - Can be use as a NAS.
    - Possible to hack firmware.
    - Generally reasonably priced.

    • Awesome. Thanks.

Now I have a much better understanding of the models.
