  • I don't know why I purchased an Apple TV considering I have a Samsung smart tv and a Playstation 4. Can anyone tell me anything that the Apple TV can do and those 2 things can't?

    • +8

      AirPlay

      • Yeah, that and home sharing is the big one for me. In this day and age, it is the only way I know of you can play legal digital video downloaded and just streamed over your lan. So you download the TV shows from itunes on your PC or even your ipad or iphone (using the watch later so you can download full HD on a slow link at best quality) and then airplay via home sharing on your home lan.

Have a DNS redirect done on the unit, without having to fiddle with your router.
Makes it a cinch to get around geoblocks to overseas regions of Netflix etc.

I'd recommend one of these. I have a console for gaming, an Apple TV is for the missus to use to watch Netflix easily. No need for $300+ Apple TV to play the same games as on a smartphone already.

      • Well that just sold it for me, was looking at the new one vs this one and I only really use my existing chromecast for netflix but the geoblocks and stuff annoys me so I cancelled unotelly. But if Apple TV makes it much easier I'm sold.

      • +3

Pretty sure on the PS4 and most smart tv's you can manually enter the DNS details too.

My Samsung F8500 can do that without an issue. Only thing I've found that can't do that and has to use DHCP is my Roku. Although I know a few other media players have the issue as well.

I don't remember seeing one TV that you can't set the DNS on.

      • PS3/PS4 can do that. Super easily (used my getflix).

Plus keep in mind you can pay for a netflix subscription with itunes cards and buy the cards when they're on sale for a cheaper netflix subscription

      • +2

You can do that with an iPhone/iPad nowadays, it's no longer only available when you sign up with an Apple TV.

      • Didn't know that

Often see iTunes cards discounted, but not in the Apple segment, so never looked further. Awesome of I can use iTunes to pay my Netflix subscription….
        Cheers

    good deal

  • Think it's been this price at office works recently

    • Looks like it was just last month

      • Cool. I wasn't sure but I remember seeing the price

  • Price beat won't apply at Officeworks as they have the same price on sales.

is this where we speak to Harvey Norman online, and request them to drop the price to $87.99?

  • Can this model be jailbroken?

  • Thanks OP

Can anyone find a deal on the current model?

I'm sure there's some way of buying a wish gift card and spending it on another gift card to get another gift card to get a cheaper price by accumulating savings on gift cards….

      Edit:

Assuming the stars align correctly, the wind is blowing south and its a sunday…..

This is the best I could come up with…

Buy $200 Wish Gift Card in store at RACV for 5% off ($190 save $10) - Must be RACV member
Pay using your ING Everyday card for 2% cashback on pay wave ($3.80) - Must be ING account holder

      $269
      -$13.80
      $255.20

Or make it even easier on you and cheaper. Sign up for $25 email code with faux email address. Use code ftw. 268-25= $243 :)

I just use my fire tv, play games, allows you to plug in usb game controller, runs emulators, and does air play too. Okay no 4K support but nether does atv 4.

        • Think I might do that, but for the older model and buy 2 and sell 1 seeing as though they hold their value quite well.

    • Kogan has atv 4 (32GB) for $219 + shipping

  • +1

Thanks. Nearly pulled the trigger on getting the ATV 3 yesterday so I'm glad I waited.

JB price matched (well.. they beat it by an extra 30c) without issue.

I recently sold my Apple TV3 that I bought second-hand more than 2 years ago for $80. Got $82 plus a few bucks on postage. These things hold their value!

    • They do. I sold my old 720p model for more than I paid for the new 1080p model a few days later.

      • I know they are hackable, but I really can't understand what anyone would want with a device only capable of 720p output.

  • Don't buy this if you want to use Apple Music. Why they can't make the service available on the 3rd gen is beyond me.

    • That's okay, my trial is up. Couldn't you airplay it?

      • YEs I guess you could if you were using an iPhone, but for andriod, without a 3rd party app I'm not sure.

      Suggest you stick with Lemons.

Whilst this is cheap, it's probably worth noting some of what you're missing out on compared to the newer model:

    • No tvOS
    • No App Store
    • No Siri
    • No 802.11ac WiFi
    • No Dolby Digital 7.1
    • No iTunes Radio
    • No universal search (limited as it may be)
    • No multitasking (multiple apps open at the same time)
    • No Bluetooth controller
    • +1

Which would be fine if it was only another $50 or so more, but the price they're asking for it is crazy.

      • Agreed, but it's still worth noting the differences. :)

  • Bought 50 (seriously) of these a week ago at this price!

    • Do you have 50 displays? Can't imagine why anyone would want 50. Please explain.

      • +1

For a school. So yes we have many more than 50 displays.
