Wish my Dick lasted 20 minutes. I'm more of a firesale kind of guy.

      • oh nooo … not again.

        we have all been DICKED

    • +2

      Feels more like a competition!
Slim chance of finding a product with the combination of:
      - being wanted,
      - being on sale,
      - being in stock and
      - being found inside the 20 minutes.

Be nice if the DickSmiths had presented some examples of anything matching the above criteria…

    • Would have been good if the Website actually WORKED in those 20 minutes…

  • +3

Damn, could have got the Nutri Ninja IQ BL480 for $7.80 less than the $159 I paid yesterday.

    Any other bargains?

    • now i know why i did not buy it yesterday :D

      • biggest problem is: only 1 year extended warranty option with DSE, whereas, "the good guys" offer 2 years extended warranty (instant instore replacement) for the same price that DSE does 1 year extended.. meh.

        • +10

Do ozbargainers really buy extended warranties? Learn your Australian Consumer Law!!!

        • @stirlo:
          Please explain ????

        • @joshuah: https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/consumer-rights-guarantees…

The consumer guarantee basically covers 95% of the cases where you would use your extended warranty for free. The key phrase is "Products must be of acceptable quality, that is: safe, lasting, with no faults" If your product fails after a year or so you can claim remedy as it wasn't lasting.

        • @stirlo:

"… or so" …. thats pretty loose though? This blender comes with 1 year warranty… do you think consumer rights will cover it when it is almost 3 years old and it fails?

        • @joshuah: Yep, small apliances are expected to last 5 years. Large ones 10.

        • @stirlo:
That is interesting… do you have a link which officially states that?

        • @stirlo: it comes with the standard 1 year warranty, consumer warranty provides warranty for an additional 6 months, sometimes a year, it really depends on the retailer.

        • +1

          @eXtremist:
6 months to 1 year is different to 5-10 years stated by @stirlo

        • @joshuah: don't think there is a page that will specifically state that, its a generalization.

        • @eXtremist:
I guess it comes down to how important is the appliance in your everyday use… you could be waiting weeks or months to get an out of warranty issue remedied vs extended warranty which would be instantly swapped instore for like $39 for 2 years?

        • @joshuah:

          Answer: Yes

The more expensive the item the longer the expected life time (within reason).

Example: A dishwasher for $500 can fail after say 4 years of use while a Miele dishwasher for $2000 can reasonably be expected to last 8-10 years.

        • @eXtremist: Yep, it's about as clear as mud. The best example I can find with minimal googlefu is probably this.

          http://www.abc.net.au/news/2011-06-07/broken-but-out-of-warr…

For example, if consumers generally buy a television with a reasonable expectation for it to last five years, then they may have a statutory guarantee against the retailer that lasts substantially longer than the one year manufacturer's warranty.

If the TV is a more expensive brand, especially one that makes claims about its quality and durability, it will be held to a higher standard of quality and durability under the ACL than a home brand that is half the price and does not make similar claims.

Also most salespeople I've met have been right on the edge of the law with regards to this…
          https://www.consumer.vic.gov.au/businesses/fair-trading/guar…

          "Suppliers must not:

pressure consumers to buy an extended warranty
tell a consumer that they must pay for any rights equivalent to a consumer guarantee.
Suppliers also need to be careful not to imply that only an extended warranty will cover problems with a product. Doing so may amount to misleading a consumer about their rights.

          For example:

James is buying a new plasma TV for $6000. The TV has a one-year manufacturer’s warranty. The salesperson persuades James that it would be best to purchase an extended warranty to cover him so that if the TV breaks down after one year he will be covered for the cost of any repairs.

In this situation, the salesperson could be accused of misleading James about his rights.

A reasonable consumer would expect a $6000 TV to last longer than one year. Therefore James would be entitled to a remedy free of charge under ACL on the basis that the TV is not of acceptable quality. He does not need an extended warranty to access these rights."

        • "You can ask a business for your preference of a free repair, replacement or refund, but you are not always entitled to one. For example, the consumer guarantees do not apply if you got what you asked for but simply changed your mind, found it cheaper somewhere else, decided you did not like the purchase or had no use for it.

          See: Exceptions to consumer guarantees

If you have a minor problem with a product or service, the business can choose to give you a free repair instead of a replacement or refund. When you have a major problem with a product, you have the right to ask for your choice of a replacement or refund. For a major problem with a service, you can choose to receive compensation for the drop in value below the price paid, or a refund."
          https://www.accc.gov.au/consumers/consumer-rights-guarantees…

Typically upto two years you shouldn't have a problem. They argue sometimes then they realize you know the law and give up.

        • @joshuah: You're correct about the ease of extended waranties vs ACL. It's not supposed to be like that (there's provisions that say repairs must be completed quickly) but being able to walk in a demand a on the spot swap might make it worthwhile for some. But really all you're paying is a fee for convenience not for any additional rights.

        • Do people recommend going directly to the retailer or to the manufaturer?

I have a macbook pro (15" retina) was pretty expensive (16GB ram, 512GB SSD), its now outside the 1 year warranty… its starting to overheat and battery is not lasting long at all…

        • @stirlo: Quoting from a news article written by a journalist isn't exactly reliable information.

        • @joshuah: Either Apple or the retailer will certainly have to repair/replace it under ACL. I'd go to an Apple store if possible and just mention the ACL hopefully they can repair it right there. Your retailer will also have to however it's likely they will take a while longer as they will most likely send it to apple for repair/assessment.

        • @stirlo: Thanks! I will give it a go tomorrow.

        • +1

          @stirlo:

Yep, small apliances are expected to last 5 years. Large ones 10.

Utter bollocks. The lifetime of a product under the ACL is defined by many parameters such as the cost, the type of product and how long it would be expected to last. A Miele oven could be expected to last 6 years for example whereas a DeLonghi 3 years but this is not even clear cut as a minor failure might only be covered for 2 years but a major failure might be covered for longer.

        • @Maverick-au: The time frames I've supplied came from a law text book from my uni days. It's very interesting because the authorities for this come from cases quite some time ago. In the 70's-80's it was common to expect a TV to last 15+ years and a toaster to last a decade. Of course consumer goods in those days cost a far high percentage of wages and society wasn't as disposable so I'll agree it is likely to be less now. That said I'm not aware of any newer authorities that would contradict these time periods.

Your example of Miele vs DeLonghi is just a guess. I would expect any consumer good purchased from Kmart to last at least 2 years without failure and If I'd purchased a branded item for 10 times the Kmart price it's pretty reasonable to expect it to last at least 3-5 times as long.

    • cool now i know what to buy, have been holding out on one for a while now..

    • Looks like the code doesnt work for the Nutri Ninja so you still got a bargain

Everytime these sales come up, I hope that somehow, they will forget to put the Samsung S6 on the gigantic list of exclusions. Never happens with the good discounts, but someday, maybe…

    • +5

Was gonna say that "only" Samsung TV and tablets are excluded… But then I saw that ALL mobile phones are excluded as well. These exclusions cover pretty much anything anyone would want to buy.
