Samsung NX1 Body Only. 28MP, 15fps, 4k Video. RRP Was $1899, Now $1539 + Delivery at CamBuy

30

So Samsung NX1 has been discontinued and the rumour is there is a new successor coming based on this over night news -

"Let me rephrase what I've mentioned a while ago that we discontinued manufacturing nx1 since we already producing a much better or upgraded version, and it was developed by taking consideration some of the faults or issue from the nx1 model."

So it looks like Cambuy and other resellers are dropping the price of the Samsung NX1. Was $1899 RRP, now $1539.

Most Samsung lenses have also dropped in price. If you want to use another camera lens like a Canon, you'll need an dumb adapter which can be purchased from ebay.

This is currently the best APS-C camera sensor on the market and is a solid overall camera. Please be aware there is still uncertainty regarding the Samsung rumours regarding if the camera division is closing or not. It may or may not be true. One thing for sure is nothing from Samsung has officially been confirmed or denied on their website.

  • better than a6000?

    • No.

    • Yes, but at what cost/size/weight?

    • -2

      yes, much better than Sony A6000, but A6000 is cheaper and in a different category. It's not a fair comparison.

      A better comparison is the Samsung NX500 vs A6000. Both have pros and cons. NX500 has more tech features like 28mp, 4k video recording, touch screen, touch focus, but A6000 has higher fps, and EVF which is really handy on bright days.

      • As of February 2015, there are 15 Samsung lenses available.[7] As of February 2015, the NX-mount is supported by at least one additional manufacturer: Samyang Optics, which only delivers lenses without autofocus / image stabilization.

          The lens range is small but the quality is good. You don't need that many imo.

          I've got the :
          16-50mm 2-2.8f S ois lens
          50-150mm 2.8f S ois lens
          50-200mm 3.5-5.6f ois lens
          60mm 2.8f macro.

          There's always adapters for Canon (FD & EF), Nikon, Sony, t mount lenses if you really wanted more lenses. They'll just be used open and manual focused.

          @Raima:

          A dumb adopter is only good for things that doesn't move, and with not too strong light (aperture doesnt change). So, pretty useless. Most lenses are sharper with a step or two down.

          Unless Samsung confirm that they will continue making NX-mounts, or NX1 together with the current available lenses will not worth much. because better glasses (e.g. large aperture prime) will not be produced.

        • -1

          @googleyahoo69: Good point on still subjects, can still be used if they're not moving too fast, but definitely more challenging. NX1 has got focus peaking, so that helps with manual focus a lot. There's also a x5 or x8 magnification option.

          Mixed news with NX mount. The 300mm S lens was/is (?) being developed. Here's some pics of the prototype - https://www.dropbox.com/sh/5h79mozvhklyz85/AABXbY9O69BQIq0aa…

          NX1 is confirmed by many stores it's discontinued, but is still a solid camera, holding the position of currently the best APSC camera on the market today. Uncertain about successor. Will have to wait if anything eventuates.

          As for large aperture glass, there's already a good range of primes.

          Your good options are:

          30mm f2.0
          45mm f1.8
          85mm f1.4

    • You're better off with the a6000, smaller, cheaper, better lens selection

        Iphone 6s. Fits in pocket with bendable functionality.

    Samsung is done. Will not buy at this price.

    This camera will be $699 max once Sammy confirms the exit of whole photographic business.

    • You should always buy for yourself first. This isn't for everyone, but it may be for some.

      • It may be for me too if the price is right ;)

        This is just a small ripple before the real storm hits. Will closely monitor as I'm anticipating a huge drop real soon.

    One of the best mirrorless APS-C cameras, but it's probably not the smartest move to invest in the Samsung NX system.

  • +2

    Spending over $1500 for a Samsung camera, good luck.

  • Buy a dead camera for $1.5K? Bargain? NO.

    • I'm pretty sure this will outshoot anything that's under $1539 (video or stills). Regardless if Samsung releases anything in the future, it's still a solid camera.

      • +1

        A camera body is blind without lenses.

        60D will open up doors for a cheaper price… or the 7DII for a similar cost will be a no brainer. Both (or Nikon eqv) has a great library of lenses.

        • -3

          300+ lenses is useless if a camera can only use 1 at a time. Samsung has quality lenses that cover most used ranges (18mm- 300mm FF equivalent). The 50-150mm 2.8f lens recently won the best crop lens award on dpreview. Professional Samsung S lenses are also substantially cheaper than the Canon or Nikon equivalent.

          6D and 7D can't compete on:
          * True 4k video 24/25/30 fps
          * 120fps 1080 video
          * 400% slow motion 1080 video
          * h265 encoding (4k bluray standard)
          * 205 AF points and 215 contrasting focus points
          * 28MP resolution
          * 15fps
          * More shots on buffer when NX1 matches 6D or 7D on fps and resolution
          * Touch screen for fast touch focus
          * USB charging for more uninterrupted shots throughout the day

          NX1 is a solid camera. I haven't even touched on other features of the camera.

        • @Raima:

          For that money you could buy a full frame camera. Who really wants a fancy APS-C when you cold buy an A99 for that price now.

        • @mitchins:

          Sony A99 is $2600+ (australian stock). It's substantially more expensive, but if that works for you, get that. This is only providing people an option, and it's the best APS-C camera on the market for substantially less money.

        • @Raima:

          That's what she has said, her iphone6 can do better.
          - 4k video
          - retina (or whatever it's now called) screen with gorilla glass
          - wifi
          - it's an apple
          - can take clip on lenses on ebay
          - attachable to selfie stick

          No doubt the Samsung is good for what it is. But as I have said, with a collection of lenses, the camera is useless.

          Welcome to shooting. I understand you are relatively new to the game. But once you have a collection of L and G lenses, together with a few flashguns, the NX1 is nothing more than 4k video recorder without the L and G lenses.

          10fps is good enough for most sports shooting on 7DII with weather seal.

          NX1's AF with the electronic view finder is close to useless under low light.

          Touch screen focus is such a gimmick. When you eyes on the view finder, the best way to get a precise focus is to use point focus by rotating the dial to select the exact point. Especially in low light. And God forbids someone would have a finger size that covers the screen.

          28MP is nothing more than whats good on paper for show for most people. In fact, 12MP is likely enough for large commercial prints.

          USB charging? When someone is doing real shooting, forget about charging, you carry a few batteries with you. Sorry, need to laugh at this one. Lol.

        • @Raima:

          Your points have merit. I dot wish to argue them.
          In terms of photographic importance it's important to have a high DR in sensor, good AF, and most importantly great lenses. I highly doubt Samsung lenses will compete with any OEM G/L/Zeiss lenses or even the awesome sigma ART range.

        • @googleyahoo69:

          Yes, apple iphone does take great video. It lacks some of the controls when shooting video tho. It's definitely an interesting development.

          googleyahoo69 - No double the Samsung is good for what it is. But as I have said, with a collection of lenses, the camera is useless.

          Samsung already has a good line of lenses and covers the most used ranges already.

          googleyahoo69 - Welcome to shooting. I understand you are relatively new to the game. But once you have a collection of L and G lenses, together with a few flashguns, the NX1 is nothing more than 4k video recorder without the L and G lenses.

          Samsung only has 2 profession lenses atm, the 15-50mm 2-2.8f and the 50-150mm 2.8f. They are substantially cheaper than the Nikon and Canon Equivalent. If you don't need that many lens option, or have as much money to get them all, then this is an option for those people.

          googleyahoo69 - 10fps is good enough for most sports shooting on 7DII with weather seal.

          Samsung NX1 is 15fps and is weather sealed also. It does lack a longer range lens tho. If the 300mm S lens come out (450mm FF equivalent), it will help fill that gap nicely.

          googleyahoo69 - NX1's AF with the electronic view finder is close to useless under low light.

          This is not true, you can crank up the iso to see in the dark if required. What the sensor sees in real time is what you see in the EVF.

          googleyahoo69 - Touch screen focus is such a gimmick.

          Not true, touch focus gives people the option to quickly select a focal point to get a timely shot in. Playing around with dials is more finicky and more time consuming to do. NX1 has this option also if that is your preference.

          googleyahoo69 - 28MP is nothing more than whats good on paper for show for most people. In fact, 12MP is likely enough for large commercial prints.

          28MP allows a person the option to crop down on images while still maintaining a good amount of detail. the lower the MP, the more pixelated when having to crop.

          googleyahoo69 - USB charging? When someone is doing real shooting, forget about charging, you carry a few batteries with you. Sorry, need to laugh at this one. Lol.

          USB charging allows a person to get battery banks without getting raped by camera manufactures. It's also handy for shooting time lapse where it extends your shooting capabilities where it is not feasible to swap out batteries.

        • @Raima:

          Okay you win.

          "Yawn". I will go get an iPhone to start on 4k video shooting now.

        • @mitchins:

          Brah… the Fujifilm Instax is better. Instant!

        • @googleyahoo69:

          If that's your preference then do that. Doesn't bother me one bit or that Canon or Nikon can't do what the iphone 6s can do. But you better put your phone on aeroplane mode so you don't get a phone call that interrupts your shooting. Also have a good pair of running shoes as you may need it to get that composition right. And I hope you got some software and lots of time for editing that can convert the 30fps to 24fps if you're doing anything that's semi professional.

    It's $1496 with free delivery from videopro

    • +1

      Price is still way too hard imho for a dead "system" regardless of how great this "body" is.

      • They never cracked the market, let's face it we can all agree to that. Many years ago their TL500 looked promising, it didn't deliver very wel.. A while later sony released the RX100 which did.

  • I don't expect a huge price drop, as there's very few NX1's left in Oz. Samsung Oz has none, and I cleared out CameraPro yesterday (they had 3). I don't imagine there's many more left. The NX1 is an outstanding camera, but with a less than clear future for NX cameras right now it may not be a great idea to start building a system around the NX1.

    • FYI: the units I bought at Camerapro.com.au were $1399 + delivery.
