Telstra 5GB Data + Telstra Cruise Mobile Phone - $9 Aus Post/DSE/Coles (before 25th Jan 2016)

1550

Given how this post gathers over 140 votes by merely taking advantage of Telstra's Christmas offer, I thought I should point out a better deal to the community. Not that I condone the seller's move by making money from taking advantage of the Telco's offer (nothing wrong with taking opportunity really), but this deal seems better. In light of this, may be the seller should sell those SIMs for $5 rather than $10? As they are not worth anything without Telstra's bonus data offer.

For $9 ($0.90 cheaper) and if you activate the SIM by choosing Telstra Freedom Plus before 25th January 2016, you get:
- 5GB of data to use for 28 days
- 50MB of bonus data for 28 days (so total 5.05GB)
- $10 of bonus top up credit
- A phone Telstra Cruise

Offer is for AusPost but might be able to price match Harvey Norman and the likes.

I just got one this afternoon and activated it, this is the balance from the account (note I have used up 300MB):

Credit to ciab who posted the original Aus Post deal. Original Telstra 5GB bonus deal here.

Edit: Note that the SIM card size that comes with it is a standard SIM.

Edit 2: Also $9 in store at DickSmith.

Edit 3: Also $9 at Coles, see comments below. Available at Harvey Norman till 15/11: http://www.harveynorman.com.au/telstra-zte-cruise-pre-paid-m…

Out of curiousity, with these data deals, what do people usually use them for? Assuming you already have a mobile plan that provides sufficient data according to your usage.

    • +5

You can put it in a 3G/4G modem, iPad, extra phone etc to create a hotspot. Good for travelling I guess where you don't have ordinary internet to use, especially in the coming Christmas period.

    • +2

My mum uses them in a modem when she goes to the beach house

Let me tell you, I just disconnect my pathetic ADSL2+ service. My house is 3.5km cable length from the exchange and I got speedtest of <1.8Mbps… My house mate is running some torrent and I am very pissed off with the speed. Not to mention there was such high noise on the copper line and I got constant drop out last month… Enough is enough…

I am using Telstra 4G now and also have 5GB from Amaysim deal I get much data to use anyway… I checked my usage history and I don't download much recently so I want a stable and fast internet. I can get 30Mbps on Telstra and Optus 4G which is >15times faster than my pathetic ADSL2+. I have Huawei Y550 and also the Telstra USB $19 on sale now to use …lol

Also I may buy Telstra 4GX phone to test out 4GX speed. I was about to buy the Optus $2 day unlimited SIM on Gumtree but now I think it is not worth it for 3G speed. Also I can't accept the fact that I managed to activate 1 myself even after the cut off date of that deal and now I need to buy it (back then I don't see the need for it so let it expired).

From now on I will look for all clearance Telstra Starter Kit to buy for my internet usage ;)

    • Everything illegal

    • Give to my 8 yr old in a modem during school holidays so he cant exceed my phone allowance which after 7GB is $10 per GB auto billed…..

He can you tube till it stops with no bill shock

    • Internet at the boarding house. I'm not on a plan and don't do contracts.

  • +1

Is it 5GB 24/7 throughout the month or does the BS day/night restriction apply?

  • DSE have it for the same price but not sure if it has the same data with the sim card.

(buy 6 and use PAYBACK10 to get $10 off) doesnt work

    ebay link

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Telstra-ZTE-Cruise-3G-Prepaid-Mob…

    • +2

Yes DSE will have the same data offer, however DSE has to be delivered so effectively it is about $19.

      • Was advertised in DSE store today

        • +1

          Thanks, updated title.

    • any discount with ebay for now?

  • Damn, I feel ripped off

  • I assume you can pull out the sim card, put it in a 4G modem and reactivate?

    • +2

      You assume correctly.
May require changing APN but isn't too hard.

  • Does anyone know if I'd be able to use the 5GB overseas to the full effect, or would it either block the data usage or take it out in larger allotments?

    • +2

Prob would not be able to use a single byte overseas. These data plans are for use in Australia only. Roaming internationally charges the balance directly, and would be very very expensive. Note that this balance is not 'call credit',but the dollar for dollar value of your recharge.

      • +1

Makes sense, still might be worth getting though for upcoming travel within Australia.

    • +2

      Definitely wouldn't be for overseas.

  • hmm, just bought the other deal.

    this sounds too good.

  • Is the simcard standard size or micro?

I assume phone is network locked?

    • Most certainly locked.

      • For $5-10 it can by unlocked by @bagman

  • +1

If the sim size was right, it could be used as back up sim in dual sim phone or private phone line. MicroSim is what I need.

Then again if not micro I suppose I could cut it down to size if careful or not.

Has anyone had any luck with this strategy.

    Thanks

    • Take it into a Telstra shop and they'll usually swap it over for you

    • just get 3 in 1 SIM cutter on ebay for like $6 - $7

      • And sandpaper it thinner.

        • +1

you don't have to, it will fit.

    • +4

I cut mine down with a sharp pair of scissors using template I downloaded from here:-
      http://www.gosoftworks.com/GoSoftWorks/NanoSIM_files/nanosim…

  • As much as the phone is literally free…you reall cant get much of use since its locked and i cant imagine this day and age you use this phone with telstra…anyhooo still great deal

    • I am with Telstra and am happy with its speed and coverage compared to other networks.

      Free is free!

  • Can you please advise what size sim it comes with?

    • It comes in a standard sim, you could cut it or do a sim swap at Telstra.

      • Telstra will cut it at any store.

        • sim swap at Telstra

  • Offer is for AusPost but might be able to price match Harvey Norman and the likes.

    $14.50 @ http://shop.davidjones.com.au/djs/en/davidjones/telstra-crui… - price match using amex :)

  • -1

So how do you get the phone and the 5GB data for $9.00?

  • I think the phone comes with the sim and by activating it, choosing appropriate plan they give u 5Gb

  • Nice deal OP

  • +1

Does this phone have hotspot capability?

    • +1

Even if it did it would drive you insane.
      * battery =bad
      * no 4G

**** but that is just my opinion :)

      • Thanks

      • -4

no big difference in 4g/3g in real life. I usually get 5-8 Mbit/s with 3g, sometimes twice as much. It's difficult to tell the difference until you torrent.

        • +1

That couldn't be further from the truth.

4G is way faster in real life scenarios, such as pinging (loading) a website and jumping on YouTube, etc.

    • You should be able to share internet via USB wire.

  • Does this come with any credit that can be used for Google play?

    • +1

No credit, just $10 bonus call credit and 50MB bonus data usually, but additional 5GB bonus before 25th Jan.

      • Thanks mate. Good deal regardless.

  • +1

silly question but is this phone locked to Telstra?

    • +1

      @macrOhard

      Yes. :)

  • +1

I wish there was a longer expiry available for a backup device

  • Sold out in canberra

    • Is this whole of Canberra or you just checked Canberra city?

      • Edit: just bought one from Auspost in Canberra centre, I got the last one as they had to give me the one on display

  • Is this Aus wide?

    • Never mind getting from harvey norman instead

  • +2

Guess I'm not running out of data anytime soon now I have

    5GB Amaysim Plan.
    2x $10 3 Month Amaysim 5GB
    1x Telstra 5GB Sim

Still tempted to pick one of these up though..!

    • +1

If it feels good, do it.

  • +1

    Also available at Harvey Norman

  • Just bought 2 from local post office. They don't have it on display. Or to be more precise, they have seemingly the same item on display for $30. We checked the availability on their computer. Different offices have 0-6 in stock. Most offices still have 2-3 in stock.
I haven't activated yet, so can't confirm 5 GB data. $10 credit is mentioned on the box.

  • I still have not activated my $10 sim card which was included with my Nokia Lumia. Will I get 5GB if I activate it now?

  • Where does it say you get the data?

  • Same price in the JB HIFI when I stopped by to price match and still our of stock. Eventually Price matched from HarveyNorman. Thanks for the post.

  • Picked up 2 at Dick Smith for $9 each. could potentially get another 10% off with this- https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/219587

    • Thanks, added into title.

Edit: Actually, the t&c says exclude prepaid mobile product so I don't think 10% would work.

      • It does work, I got 10% discount for my 2 Telstra Cruise yesterday :)

        • nice! At times the staff aren't entirely aware of the t&c so depends on the luck of the draw :)

  • Two left at Adelaide post office near Chinatown. In the historic building.

  • Does anyone know if the the phone allow you to share your internet (Hotspot), if it does it could make a nice cheap WiFi Modem.

    • +1

The phone does not have WiFi, so can't really do hotspot I think.

  • Also available at Coles for $9.

The SIM card can be pressed out as either normal size or micro.

    • Updated title. Cheers.

  • Hoping to activate it then put in iPad.
    Any issues with this?

    • it should work without problem

  • Looks like jb hi fi has the same deal. They had a price tag for $9 but it scanned at $39. I told them about the price tag and then they had a look. When he came back he was holding the price tag and said that's cheap. Called the manager and they gave it to me for $9. Hopefully they put the price tag back.

  • Just grabbed one from DSE, nothing on display and the staff member was not sure but when I insisted a little he found one under the counter and it scanned @ $9 so all good. Thanks for posting the deal.

  • +1

Is $9 in our local Coles too.

  • Anyone know the cheapest device/phone to buy to use this sim card as hotspot?

Planning on buying this phone tomorrow for $29 but just wondering if there is a cheaper option http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/telstra-zte…

    • That's pretty cheap, but if you don't need the phone functions you could get Vodafone 3G Pocket WiFi + 3GB for $39.00 @Harvey Norman and get another month of internet with 3gb data.

      • +1

I refunded the phone today, it was too slowly to use as a hotspot, plus the battery dies too quickly. Planning on getting Telstra 4g WiFi modem tomorrow when this deal starts

        • That's perfect, plus another month with 2gb.

  • Disregard please, as above. At Coles for $9 from 18th November, presume it's the same deal with the 5Gb.

  • Is this deal still going?

    • Yes all links still show $9 for the Cruise.

  • $9 for:
    1) 5GB
    2) Power charger (that you can use with other phones)
    3) Probably crappy earphones
    4) Undoubtedly crappy phone
    5) ???
    6) OzBargain Seal of Approval
