This caused such a storm over at HotUKDeals I just had to post it and see what you all thought of this interesting but new contraption. If it does indeed work well, what a fantastic cable it would be.

This psychedelic image reflects the main advantage of this cable with its ability to be inserted either way into the phone or charger. Just don't look too long at it.

This is a preorder and expected to arrive mid December.

Will this work with my Nexus 6P? Haha.

    • +1

Nope, your 6P is type C :) this is type B!

      • That was the point… Jealousy causes down voting.

  • +1

What an extreme sounding name for a usb cable!

  • +11

Why is this sort of cable only appearing now? Micro USB has been pretty ubiquitous for a while now, you'd think someone would've come up with this ages ago. Makes me doubt whether it actually delivers …

    • Well I guess people know now that it's something in demand, after people say they want USB type C for the same reason.

      • +2

but lighting cable has been around for a while. someone should think of this at least a year ago maybe the research isnt that easy.

        • +2

Second thing is incentive. Companies didn't have to compete with USB C or lightning until the last few years.

        • The lightning cable is proprietary. USB-C is an international standard.

    • +3

Yeah, no way would I pre-order this product. If it actually gets proven to work well in the wild then maybe I will cough up a few bucks to make my life ever-so-slightly more convenient.

    • Without knowing anything about it, to be reversible means each contact point has to have two instead of the usual one terminals, separated by an insulator, inside the same space footprint as before. Being thinner means more susceptible to snapping, more danger of the contacts wearing out from multiple insertions. That leads to the use of tougher metals, and being harder to manufacture. Which ultimately leads to higher cost. Which is ultimately the reason why we don't have anything.

Everything basically exists already, in some form, its just uneconomical for mass production at this point in time.

      • … Being thinner means more susceptible to snapping, more danger of the contacts wearing out from multiple insertions.

Yeah, but there are TWO SETS of contacts in each plug, and due to the "law of random insertions", each set will get used more or less equally.

Therefore the amount of wear that you describe is halved.

I think I would still instinctively check which way it is hahah

    • LOL I check the lightning cable sometimes. Old habits die hard!

    • OMG, I just ordered one and forget this cashreward matter.

        The great Ozbargain scam.

When a deal is so good you forget the CashRewards

        • +1

Yep guilty of that all too many times.

    • so how does this work? just sign up for an account and purchase stuff like normal? or do you need to put in a code or something in checkout
      nvm i've got it!!!

    • Orders placed after the 5th of November will be shipped by the 5th of December.

Innovation in a really old cable design! Surprised!

  • I ordered them about a week ago via https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/216919
AUD $10.16 for 3. same discount code too.
got an email a few days back saying they are shipped.

I always forget Cash Rewards though.

    • I ordered them about a week ago

I ordered then 12 days ago.

got an email a few days back saying they are shipped.

I have not received any shipping advice.

      • exact dates as I was only guessing before… so mine was ordered same date as yours (when the original post on OzB was posted.
        order date 10/26/2015 02:10:11
        shipped date 11/04/2015 09:11:05

just becuase I got an email doesn't actually mean I will get them before you (or at all). I am not very trusting of OS companies selling cheap goods, hope they change my view.

        • I ordered yesterday and got the shipping notification just now.

I'm worried that this would damage the micro-usb port of the device after a while.

  • These USB ports were so poorly designed. From an engineering background, it's baffling.

  • Flogging a dead horse. I sounds good buvwith type c already here then there is not much to improve our gain on an old design.

    • +2

A lot of new popular phones are coming out/have come out with micro-USB (Z5 series, Oneplus X, Note 5/S6 Edge+, Huawei Mate S, HTC One A9, some others), and people are gonna keep these for at least 1-2 years, so why not cheaply innovate on an older design?

      • Given that we wan the best in data transfer by our network but we bottleneck at the USB connection.

Anyway didn the samsun galaxy s4 come out with a fancy fast USB port?

        • It was the S5 and Note 3.

        • +1

@Tea-Aholic: You can still use a USB2 cable with the S5 and Note3 though, just plug it in on the side of the socket that it fits. It'll still charge and give you USB2 transfer speeds.

        • @Minotaur: Yep! I did know about that and it was cool!

    • that doesnt help with current phone though.
I only use it for charging so don't care about data rates.

  • +2

So this is designed to eliminate the 4th dimension from inserting cables??

  • +4

This psychedelic image reflects the main advantage of this cable…

    I need a cold shower.

  • +7

I wonder how long it'll be before we see a rip off of this product on a crowd funding site claiming to be 'original'.

  • +1

No chance that this will meet USB reliability standards. Might be "good enough" in some applications?

  • Any idea if it work with USB3.0?

    • Definitely not for data, but if the device has a USB3 micro-usb 'b' style port (eg Note 3 / SGS5) - this will fit in half of it for charging and USB2 data transfer.

      • +1

My concern is about the fact that USB3 (big one, type A I guess) has additional contacts. And the page does not say anything about compatibility.

        • Fair call - though the extra (other side) pins will be where the solid section usually is… so in my imagination it would be fine.

You would hope they would have tested it on a USB3 port at some stage!

  • +1

Received on Monday, used for 3 days and died yesterday.

Will I ever learn not to embrace beta testing technologies ?

    • Received on Monday, used for 3 days and died yesterday.

      All three cables?

      • just one of them, it just doesn't charge anymore, I'm using the 2nd and it seem ok so far.

        • +1

As a matter of principle invoke the 18 month warranty that they say on the site this cable has.

  • Mine were only marked as posted today…?!?!?!?! Completely forgot I'd ordered them.
