Got my Telstra one for 5c! Scanned for 2c but she had to charge me 5… ripped off! Exp mid Dec 15.

      • Can you confirm it was the $30 3GB white Telstra pack? Nano or micro-SIM? Old $2 packs are selling around that price.

So if you found a $30 pack that's a great bargain & only one reported :-)

So, smaller centers like the Central Coast NSW may be a more likely place to find these packs.

      • +1

You should have gotten 3 for the same price.

        • Not if there was only 1 available, as I suspect.

  • Sounds too good to be true…

    • But yay it is true

  • +1

    Expiry dates?

    • +1

Couple 1st Oct, rest 1st Dec. But the expired ones don't phase me due to what was said in the other thread linked in op.

Got any experience of swapping the $30 sim kits at a optus/Telstra store for unexpired ones Infidel?

      • I had a pain of a time getting a non-expired one (4 days till expiry) that comes up as expired when trying to activate. One shop refused to replace it because I didn't buy it from them (got from supermarket and no receipt anymore), a second time with different staff, they say they ran out, they only had post paid available. Another shop I went to, the guy grabbed one of their empty sims (I guess they don't stock credited SIMs either) and actually argued with optus support in India to credit it with $30. Of course, by then I've already transferred my number to a new working SIM, thankfully their prepaid daily plan makes it irrelevant activating early and I had a dual-SIM phone.

      • +1

Food… only just saw your question.

Swapping expired sims for new stock at Telstra has been debated before in Telstra deals. I've had no luck. But some staff occasionally have done it, although they shouldn't have. So try next store if they won't.

I had a lot of problem activating a Telstra SIM just before expiry as outlined below. Telstra phone support directed me to Telstra Shop who refused to swap SIM or help in any way. Went to next TShop, but manager of first shop entered & told off helpful staff member & verbally abused me… he owned both franchised stores. Finally got through to Telsta support in Australia by phone who understood problem & applied $30 credit to my account to use as I wished ($30 recharge).

I rarely use Optus as have very poor reception in my area. Staff at Coles Express today said was no real issue if SIM is just out of expury, but they are not Optus.

  • -8

Probably expired kits. And staff would take then anyway if not expired

    • Apparently not the staff in Noarlunga, SA

      • Exactly ;)

      • In Noriega SA?

    • +1

you can still activate expired Optus kits from this deal - https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/218551

      • +1

You have no way to argue your case with Optus if they dont activate though.

        • Precisely, anecdotal recollections of positive experiences with Optus regarding the activation of expired SIM packs doesn't necessary infer that it's the norm.

    • -3

Why all the negs? It's human nature and happens in retail stores.

      • -2

Yep as soon as ozbargainers start calling inquiring about stock, staff are made aware of these deals and take them for themselves.

Maybe Op got lucky nut others won't be

    • I'm assuming that you checked out Bankstown right EasternCulture? If there's no stock it'd be good to know cause i'm not bothered to get up and check really at the moment -.-

      • -1

Yep don't bother. Staff knew about them from the amount of phone calls

  • +1

Is there any law against how many active simcards you can have under your name?

    • "" meant to be 5 "" but it doesn't really matter

    • The number just determine the ID scrutiny.

      • I think you are right, I'm pretty sure I have activated a lot more sim cards than 5 under my name.

Now what happens is, whenever I entered Driving license details while activating a new SIM, I get an error that deatails doesn't match in the database and I'm always forced to use another form of ID i.e Passport etc.

I think it's because I have more than 5 SIMs activated under my name using Driving Licence as an ID.

    • I spoke to this guy at Telstra the other day and he told me your free to activate as many as so I would assume the same goes with optis

  • +2

most likely the same deal as this

its been cleared out by ozbargainer, and very hard to find any stock

    • -1

Yes a partial dupe of the old white Telstra IPad 3GB starter packs (shown at back in deal photo).

All Telstra iPad Starter Packs cleaned out in first day of that deal near me. Expiry date in that deal for me was Dec 15, like OP's. I only found 2 at 4 stores, and they would only sell me 1 :-(

None Garden City, Brisbane. Am in front of case in store.

    • -1

Interestingly, OP was last to comment in that 7 month old deal, basically saying deal was over as no longer 50c!

      • And? Edit: oops you edited your post
I do the same as you: port to and fro carriers using $1/$5/$10/$15 starter kits.

        • Just you made no reference to that 7 month old 50c Telstra deal - which was expired under 2 weeks after posting.

I thought you were unaware of that old deal, & was just checking why it was marked expired - & stumbled across your comments at the end.

A link to past deal is handy info in a deal - for previous discussion & that OzBargainers have picked over the stock long ago. (Except Noarlunga!)

Any SIM over $1 is too expensive for me ;-)

Good finding the Optus 50c deal.
I didn't upvote the deal, only because I expect stock will be far too limited.

Enjoy the almost free data/credit :-)

  • Deal title seams misleading - aren't these broadband SIMs only.

    • The labelling doesn't seem to matter, assuming they are the standard Telstra kit with a SIM you can snap out to 3 different sizes. As noted by Food, you can activate a broadband SIM as a mobile, and you can also activate a mobile SIM as broadband.

      I have done both.

      • Labelling matters trying to find stock.

These ancient Telstra broadband SIMs were single size SIMs - nano or micro.

Deal description did say OP bought broadband SIMs, but OP did not say deal is only on broadband SIMs.

If title stated the Telstra packs were data, I wouldn't have wasted my time going to store as these sold out ages ago around me.

These phased out Telstra iPad SIMs were different to latest offering, which aren't particular about device.

    • By stating which SIMs we're looking for, it helps in the search!

It's not all possible packs, only the old white broadband packs.
These may be useful for other use.
      A simple title change.

  • None at Kmart Ingle Farm - they only have mobile sims anyway. Only cheap sims were the $2 optus ones, for 5c.

    • You can use mobile SIM's to activate as a mobile phone SIM. I did it on a Telstra mobile SIM about a month ago the option came up to select activation as a mobile phone. The mobile SIM is just marketing.

      • Yes, I know, but none scanned at the above OP's price - they were all $30.

  • Yes, optus pack can be activated after expiry date but not too late, I think they have cut off time is about 1 month after that. Not so for Telstra tho, they cut it 1s after midnight, lol.

  • Check that the starter kits haven't got an expired date on them. They are worthless if expired.

  • Checked one Kmart. asked the stuff to scan the Optus iPad mini sim and they said it's still $30

  • +3

Note these are the ancient WHITE $30 Broadband Starter Packs.

These packs have been phased out long ago.

Optus packs have been yellow for a while.

Telstra white iPad Starter Packs have mainly sold out in deal 7 months ago.

Unlikely there is much stock left anywhere.

Telstra packs have a 2 year life before expiry. So these have sat around unsold for up to 2 years!!

Have been reports that Telstra recycles phone numbers just before expiry date. I've had a lot of trouble activating a SIM 1 week before expiry - Telstra refused to activate & finally gave me $30 credit.

    • +2

Re your last point: I bought one of the $5 iPad start packs a few months ago. Tried to activate it on the expiry date and was informed it had expired a fortnight prior (having read your post, I now suspect it must have been recycled). Had to jump through hoops to get a replacement - I think the only reason they relented was that the Telstra shop I was at was closing for the day and they wanted to get me out the door.

    • +3

Whatever the deal (or maybe otherwise), at 50 cents, it was certainly worth posting, for those keen to try and close to a cobwebbed Kmart.

Either way, Step Away from the SIMS, Br…

A belated Welcome Back, to OzBargain, and Brisbane (from Sydney, it would appear)

I had, of course, just assumed an unfortunate, accidental, out-of-wi-fi-range, tether-phone-drop, from a gum tree..

I am glad to see that you made your way down to the ground to retrieve it.
      :)

As per that photo-caption, also, excellent posture!

      • +1

Ah Tas, I'm a reformed OzBargainer now - on a strict diet of gum leaves if the photo is to be believed. No more posting about SIMs & maintaining the Telstra Wiki for me… but couldn't help myself with a deal for 50c SIMs ;-)

        • … I'm a reformed OzBargainer now… No more posting about SIMs & maintaining the Telstra Wiki for me…

We shall see… In the fullness of time…

I just hope that you have kept all of your many, used SIMs, my furry friend.

Certainly, one day (maybe even NOW, were you to rummage around in the leaf-litter), you will be able to melt down the metal from all of those gold-plated contacts into a pair of nice, corner-cut cufflinks, or one - also very speccy - little, sim-shaped-ingot-pendant-doo-dad.

Whether back in Taronga, or not, you will certainly the flashest OzBargain member on OzB block.
          I'm already envious. :[ + :S

BTW, I haven't been to Taronga Zoo for a while.
You didn't happen to notice any poorly-guarded porcupines, while you were staying there?

Not helped by first-commenters like 'try2bhelpful', who didn't try AT ALL, My Quest has turned-out to be unexpectedly fraught.
          :(

    No stock in Tuggeranong Kmart.

  • Wow beautiful thumb. Hand model material for sure :p

    • Thank youuuuu!

  • -1

Shame he is a port supporter

    • i only clicked on this deal because of his great profile photo.

      • Thankyou! :D

    • :(

  • +1

keep your receipts as some optus sims are dodgy.
troed to register a $30 pack yesterday and it said it had expired despite may 16 expiry on pack.
    return to shop it said.
keep those receipts….or waste 30 mins on phone to phillipino help centre giving u the run around.

  • -1

OP: how many were left after you bought at Kmart Noarlunga?

Was it only the broadband SIMs for 50c, or all types of SIMs as per deal title?

    • +2

      Left 2 for the public

      • But is deal only on broadband SIMs?

You state it is "Optus & Telstra $30 Sim Kits" which means deal (you saw) is on all $30 SIMs, not just broadband in photo, from those telcos. That is why I questioned the deal title as misleading, 6 hours ago.

It's best to specify what this deal covers, so others can find the deal.

        • Updated

        • -1

          @Food:
Surely stating these are broadband SIMs would be clearer in the title than 'Selected' & see photo in deal description?

Unless you know of other $30 SIMs discounted? Otherwise 'selected' = broadband data.

It would be less confusing & people could find stock easier.

(You explained those are not just for broadband use in the description.)

After all, the photos in Related Products shows the latest (wrong) SIM packs.

It is only the very old stock broadband white packs that are discounted to 50c.

Good idea to provide link in deal description to the original 7month old 50c Telstra 3GB SIM deal.
That will also alert people to how long the Telstra SIMs have been discounted, so they can decide how likely it is to find stock.

  • FWIW I was unable recently to get Optus to activate a Broadband Sim for a Mobile connection - tried 3 operators - was able to get a Mobile Sim for 5cents from KMart however - so YMMV

  • Previously when i purchased clearance Telstra sims from Kmart, I was told I could only buy a max of 2. I wanted 4, the Kmart employee told me that the restriction wasn't a Kmart one, but a government restriction. Are there such restriction preventing the retailers from letting customers purchase more than two SIM cards? I even had to fill out paperwork with ID…

    • I was able to get 4 from office works in their recent $10 sale. But likewise the local post office stopped at 2 recently.

    • Kmart let me buy 5 Sims, no paperwork, no hesitation

    • Didn't have to fill anything out, which is consistent with Government regulations

    • In the original deal for 50c Telstra broadband SIMs, a number of us commented that Brisbane Kmart stores consistently refused to sell more than 1 SIM per person.

      • Everytime I go to Kmart man. I am with you.

  • Airport West(VIC) store has Optus Cards

    • +1

      At 50c?

  • werribee kmart doesnt have the discounted sticker?? I even had the girl take the sim card for a scan and its showing $30 for telstra.

anyone had better luck than me?

    • Has to be the same pack as in my picture

      • ok, than werribee is out. the telstra packs i saw were the blueish purple ones, not the white ones.

        • cheers mate, you just saved me a drive to werribee

  • Was at Kmart sunny bank, Brisbane earlier. No wonder there were no stocks of Optus $30 sim packs. Hehe.

    • Doubt Sunnybank had any of the very old white broadband SIM packs anyway. Weren't any there a month ago - just the new yellow ones.

  • +1

None at KMart Eastgardens. They only have the $30 iPad Mini starter kit and they are at full price.

  • None at Brisbane - Garden City or Cannon Hill.

  • Anyone had any luck near glen Waverley ?

  • -1

    What are you hiding?

    • Wat

      • Under your thumb, presumably.. Otherwise, maybe clarify exact type of 'Food' that has a thumb?

        (Don't.)

        • Nothing, otherwise idek

  • Disappointed, 3 Kmarts and zero outcome!

  • Can anyone help with this lonely thread - Google Play Music All Access & Switching Billing?

  • Kmart Bundaberg now out, just brought the last 2 Telstra sims. No Optus sims left.

Edit: I got the $30 pre-paid micro sim for the iPad (3gb data)

  • Checked a store that often has old stock. A week back I asked about old Telstra SIMs. They let me search through the display case, but no luck. Asked them to check out the back.

Yesterday saw on display 5 Telstra micro-SIM iPad packs & 1 Telstra nano-SIM phone pack. But all scanned at $5! Checked expiry - June to October.

Telstra micro-SIM iPad packs were generally not reduced in the previous deal, but reduced since. That's why those are the ones still left, but most will be expired or only have at most a few weeks left.

So check Telstra expiry dates before purchase, as you won't be able to activate expired SIMs according to Telstra.

    Disappointed again :-(

    • So they are selling expired SIM starter packs that are essentially worthless (that's right $0 value) but priced at checkout for $5. How nice of them to rip people off.

      • I didn't quite put it like that to the inexperienced staff member, but told her to withdraw them from sale & contact Telstra

  • Just activated the only 50c Telstra iPad Starter Pack I bought - 7 months ago, expiring in 1 month.

-Can activate the Broadband kits on Prepaid Mobile if wishing to

Seems not with Telstra (without luck & help on chat).
Only option online was to activate as mobile broadband "Data Pass" plan (3GB $30 credit). Once activated on that plan, there is no option to change. Fortunately that's what I wanted.

    • Correction: whereas new $30 Telstra Starter Packs activated as 'Data Pass' broadband plan give you $30 credit with the 3GB, these old iPad Starter Packs only have 3GB & no credit.

So when the $1 deals are available on the new $30 Telstra Starter Packs, it's better value & much longer expiry.
