I think this app would be 'Great' if your phone is rooted or you're running vanilla Android. Plays okay with my stock Samsung S4 but gets frustrating when it fails to do simple stuff.

    • This works with non-rooted phones? I've always wanted to ply with this but my main phone is non-rooted so I never bothered.

      • +2

It does work, it's just somethings it just seems incapable of doing on mine. Like switching to Flight mode? I tried when I first got it but gave up and haven't bothered to revisit. Does do some other good things though.

  • Thanks, this has been on my wish list for ages as a want rather than a need. It's rare that anything had popped up to spend those free coins on the Amazon store.

    • +1

Why didnt you get it ages ago using free Google Rewards credit ?

      • Haven't bothered with the opinions app…probably should have, then I might have bought Nova Prime by now.

Its well worth it. And never too late to start.
Ive got around $35 over the past year. Got rid of all the ad supported free apps, and got the pro versions instead.

        • @systmworks:
$1.46 at the moment. Why didn't I know about this before……never too late to start.

    Great app.

  • I need an app that will either allow me to turn off cellular network or put phone in flight mode but have Ant+ remain active.
Any chance it will help me achieve this?

    • +1

It will do this and so, so much more.

      • I purchased this and think I might be way out of my league.
What do I do to make my task?

        • +3

Tasker is very powerful, but yes, it can take a bit to get your head around the way it does things at first.

There are plenty of tutorials on the net. Here's some to get you started:

          https://www.youtube.com/user/taskertutorials
          https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjV3HijScGMynGvjJrvNN…

If you find Tasker overkill, you might find something like "Llama" easier. It's nowhere near as powerful, but it does the basics fairly well. Plus it's free.

        • I used to use Tasker but then I found Automagic. It could do anything I ever did in Tasker, but much more simply.

        • @jazoom:
Any chance of it allowing Ant+ so stay active while in flight mode?

        • Probably the easiest way is to Google what you are trying to do, with "in tasker" in the search - as chances are if you want to do it, other people have wanted to do it and its been discussed on forums etc.

In particular look for ones where people have posted screenshots of their Tasker settings. Or a bit more advanced, importing their scripts.

Today, prompted by my Google searches above about the best things to do in Tasker, I have created a new task that automatically reads out text messages (in the format "New message received from <sender>" and then the msg is read), but ONLY when my bluetooth is connected to my car. It even pauses any music playing from my phone, and resumes afterwards.
I have bluetooth turned on all the time for my Smartwatch, so I cant simply use BT connected to anything, I have to reference my car BT profile name.

Only downside is it always tries to read the message aloud over bluetooth media connection, where I may be listening to the radio/CD/USB stick and so I would not hear it.

This is where I found it in Google: http://androidforums.com/threads/reading-sms-aloud-when-in-c…
(the 4 screenshots opened in new tabs were particularly useful - I had to create an account with this site to see them tho)

        • @dan76n: Sorry, I don't know what Ant+ is.

        • @dan76n: pretty sure ANT+ is just a paired Bluetooth device. So you can try a profile that turns bluetooth on when aeroplane mode gets activated.

          I don't have any ANT+ devices so can't check/test sorry.

  • Is this better than llama? I like the map location feature from llama, seems to be effective as I need location based to turn off on stuffs depending where I am. Examples, at work, home, outdoor, etc. Combine with time ie going near office on weekends or after hours will not consider working time

    • Llama has a simple interface and easy to use, but Tasker is way more powerful.
If Llama is doing what you want then stick with that. If you find you want more automation options then try Tasker.

Awesome app - you can do soooo much with this.

I have an Android Wear watch (Moto360) and I have lots of nice watchfaces and get bored easily. So I configured Tasker to generate a random number between 1 and 8, every hour between 8AM and 10PM, and then push one of 8 different watchfaces to my Moto360 (a different face assigned to each number). So every hour I automatically get a random one of my fav watchfaces.

Just a few of the many things you can do (some I found on reddit):

    • at 10PM at night, switch your phone to silent mode, so you dont get woken up overnight, and switch it back to normal at 7AM

    • whenever you are connected to your home or work WiFi, turn GPS off (as you know where you are!) and back on when not connected to those WiFi

    • when your car is connected by bluetooth, launch Play Music or Pandora or Spotify (or a random one of these) and then close them when connection to your car is lost.

    • if you have NFC tags, say one in your car, one on your bedside table, one on your desk at work, you can configure different actions/settings based on where you sit your phone.

    • turn screen-rotate on when the YouTube app is launched, and turn it off again when YouTube is closed

    • if you lose your phone, text it a codeword from a friends phone, to turn on mobile data, get location, take picture with front and back camera and respond to text with gps coordinates and images, lock phone with PIN, optionally turn up volume and play sound

    • if you have some home automation (say a light or aircon you can control from an app on your phone) some of these have tasker plugins, so you could configure your light to turn on when your phone connects to your home WiFi (which will often be before you have opened the door) or turn on the aircon, if the days temp was over 30 degrees.

    • hah, one person uses the location trigger to switch phone to silent whenever at church

    • at night, switch your phone to silent mode, so you dont get woken up overnight…

Can you silence a phone without being rooted? I want to silence my phone during meetings - no ringing no vibration.

      • +1 also interested in this

I'm scared to root my Note 5 and brick it in pursuit of this sort of functionality :-)

      • +1

"Silent mode" only sets the it to vibrate with Android 5.0+.
However you can still get around this by setting the vibrate on calls to off, or set the vibration intensity to 0.

      • I want to silence my phone during meetings - no ringing no vibration.

Android 6 does this out of the box now which is pretty sweet. Have it set with my work calendar and it works great.

    • Ok, convincing. I'm sold

Thanks for writing up those ideas.. Very nice! I'm going to add some of them to my phone.

      A couple that I wrote:
      - Relock my phone if a "pocket unlock" is detected (an infuriating issue on the Samsung S5)
      - Switch on wifi if connected to the cell towers near my home, switch it off otherwise.
      - Disable Bluetooth/wifi/mobile data overnight to conserve battery.
      - off/on mobile data if no internet connection is found when I switch the screen on (deals with yet another problem with my S5)

      Edit, Forget it

Here's a comparison of LLAMA and Tasker, I own both and LLAMA is free..

      http://www.slant.co/topics/1451/compare/~tasker_vs_llama_vs_…

      • Ive not used LLAMA but will try it out.
I admit Tasker really needs a fresh GUI (it looks a bit late 90's, early 00's) to be more intuitive to use, without having to fall back on its massive support base.
No regrets spending a few $$ on it tho as its been very useful over the past couple of years - back before I discovered free credit via Google Opinion Rewards app.

  • +1

Dang, I gave up hope it would come to the Amazon app store so I could use my free coins on it. Bought it with my free Google Rewards credit instead. Wait.. what am I complaining about?

  • +2

Bought, thanks EC! Wonder how much is it normally?

    • +2

This is actually the normal price.

  • Well, I have to find something to spend my $120 of Telstra credit on :)

Word of warning with Amazon appstore. They don't always update their apps ie my Plants vs Zombies version from them is still the first version that came out many years ago.

  • My phone has automatic shutdown and startup. In combination with NFC and Tasker there are soamy things that can be done.

  • +1

AutomateIt - Smart Automation is good alternative and the base version is free

    • Try Automagic. It'll blow your mind.

  • +2

Does the logo remind anyone else of the old Winamp (VLC type app Circa 2000) logo?

  • +1

This works perfectly with my pebble. You'll need pebble tasker though, but definately worth it!

  • Is there an option to select which sim to use in tasker, for a dual sim phone?

  • Can ANT+ be used to counter the data collection from other apps or turn of background running apps.

  • I use Trigger (base is free), but Macrodroid is another one of these ITTT apps which also looks good.

I will need to take a look and see if this will turn on GPS when Runkeeper launches and disables GPS when closed.

Interesting ideas for time to silence and raise volumes as I use bedside NFC for switching profiles.

    Tasker $3.49
Reward: Play Music Subscriber 10% Discount -$0.35
    Total: $3.14

  • damn! 3150 points expired. :(
didn't realise they had 1yr expiry!

  • Nice App..I am trying to have the phone listen to certain sounds and then take some actions based on it. Cannot get the thing to listen to phone mic ….any tips (a forum question but thought I'd still ask here)

    • There are apps to have mic listening all the time. I think normally it listens for the specific hotword (like "ok google") when the screen is on.

You may only be able to set 1 specific hotword after which you can then give additional specific commands.

If you want to have the phone always listening, for multiple specific sounds (not just 1 hotword) and especially if those sounds are not spoken words, you may have your work cut out for you.

      Check the AutoVoice app.

  • Samsung s5 not rooted. Can this turn data off and on with screen off and on?

    • Should do, yes. Most of its features - especially those that Android provides on screen buttons for - don't require root access.

      • Thanks for the reply mate

Looks like Tasker on Amazon is fake. Someone other than the developer has uploaded a app and is selling it as if they are the creator.

You really want to uninstall it if you got it from amazon.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/tasker/comments/3rvhqe/tasker_is_no…

    • Thanks for the heads up, I deleted it and got a no questions asked refund of the Amazon coins used to purchase it.

  • I like Macrodroid. It's powerful and much easier to use.
