i would get one if my mommy let me
One day you will grow up and be a dollar !
That's the only thing that puts me in two minds about the zero price of entry. I would prefer they keep a cost associated but credit it back, for example if adopting one normally costs $150 it still costs the same but you get $300 credit at any approved vet or something like that. It's ultimately better value for the customer, ensures income still going to the shelters, and I'm sure is a good thing for the vets as well.
Still a bargain is a bargain so + from me but don't be fooled into thinking this is free. The real cost of owning a pet isn't up front. Only buy in if you can handle the commitment.
Legitimately curious, how much do vet fees cost in Australia? / How much does it cost to have a dog in Australia?
only 7 results found for dogs……
I'm assuming there are a lot more cats than dogs. They aren't associated with the same charm as pound dogs.
there is one horse
That's because dogs rule
you sir are correct
Only 30 senior animals left.
due to adoption or 'other' reasons…
RIP
So how do they know they are over 7 years old…
"How old are you?"
And the number of barks / meows tell their age.
They reply in dog years, so any dog that continually barks more than 49 times in a row gets given away for free.
I'd give it away too.
You cut them in half and count the rings….. No wait, that's not right….
Yep, must not get them mixed up.
Trees are always hard.
… ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
Some are obvious; teeth, coat, eyes, etc. Any vet can give a fairly good estimate on age.
This is not a deal and belongs in the forums. RSPCA have been doing $0 adoptions for "senior" pets for as long as I can remember.
Touched a nerve I couldn't care if this was a deal or not. It is saving a life of a pet.
I would adopt that Bluey in a heart beat if it was in QLD and I already have 2 of my own.
This is OzBargain, not OzStandardOffer
I adopted my last 2 dogs who have ended up being incredible pals, so I don't need a lecture about saving the life of a pet. Thanks for trying so hard to educate me though.
These sorts of posts are more likely to encourage those who can't afford a pet to take one on, or are less likely to take it seriously if it hasn't got a monetary value.
Go get hooted.
Lol. I'll give kudos where they're due. That made me laugh.
"These sorts of posts are more likely to encourage those who can't afford a pet to take one on"
broadly generalising, much?it's not a deal if it always has been free and so probably does belong in the forums.
but it's also posts (as deals) like these that prompted us to consider adopting many years ago. from recollection rscpa yagoona asked a few (too many) questions before we could adopt a kitten. including asking us to consider the financial ramifications - vet fees etcMaybe the poultry adoption could count as a deal? The whole ducks usually get plenty of votes on special at Coles?
Seriously though I didn't know senior pet adoption was free, it should be promoted more, I've know several pensioners who would love and care for an animal but can't afford/justify the $300 upfront.
Anyone looking for a senior Owl?
Free adoption!
Hoot'd want to adopt an owl?
Quit pretending to know what they sound like!
Any free awareness regarding this is priceless. This is a good bargain for not only ozbargain users but also a great bargain for these misplaced pets. Win/win situation. Hell I'd recommend making this a sticky post permanently.
I don't disagree, but going back to my first post, that's what the forums are for?
Or maybe that's what advertising is for.
it might seem cheap but it'll be costing you a lot in vet bills becuase they are older
hes right though.. its NOT a deal.. been going on for months now.. I only just picked up my recent kitty from their too.
this cat looks angry http://www.rspcavic.org/adoption/animal-detail/Domestic-Medi…
Judging a cat by its cover?
haha, made me remember that the only reason (well main reason) we adopted our cat over others was the attitude it was showing in the RSPCA pic. looked like it was thinking 'stick that thing somewhere else buddy'
It's always worth checking other animal rescue services in your local area for their deals regarding senior animals. Most (if not all) will have some arrangement whereby adoption is discounted or free, due to the senior animals always being more difficult to re-house.

Should be free for every pet you get from rspca. You're taking a problem off their hands. No more feeding, caring etc.
The price stops people from 'impulse' buying, also, if you can't afford the adoption fee you can't afford the vet fees

The fee they charge includes health check, vaccination, desexing and microchipping. Take your dog to the vet and get those done and see how much change you have from the adoption fee they charge. How else would you suggest they pay to have these done for you? The vets don't volunteer their services and products to the RSPCA.
For a senior pet the RSPCA should provide a considerable discount on their Pet Insurance. It is very hard to get Pet Insurance for an animal over 7 years old.
Is there such a thing as pet life insurance?
Pet Health insurance. I assume you were being funny.
No, was actually curious.
Well, fancy that: https://www.vetinfo.com/pet-life-insurance.html
@Martijn: More like funeral insurance than life insurance. This type of insurance is often part of Pet Health Insurance and can include Pet replacement costs and the cost of putting the pet down.
the cost of putting the pet down
$30, a few years back. And free turning into compost.
A lot less than the premiums.
Always remember to make sure you have the capacity to take in the animal before you go out and get it, financially and physically. If you can, this would be a great deal.
