  • Seems like it will be shipping with Android Lollipop 5.1.1
Planned Marshmallow update is hopefully on the way

dont know, lenovo buying moto has really hampered their ability to update android versions, llok at the debacle with moto e 2015 and moto x 2014 not having any further updates

    • +1

What? Of course it's on the way, even the G2 is getting it.

      • They're definately not giving the update to the Moto G 2014 2ng gen, which is rather disappointing since the hardware can support it.

        • +2
        • I think people have asked them on Twitter and they did confirm 6 is coming to 2nd generation. This was a while ago so I could be wrong now. Also there are region based updates also, so some might get it, other might not. Either way I'd suggest unlock bootloader and Flash Cyanogenmod.

You can get it a little cheaper if you head into the store: My parents bought two earlier this week for a little under $230 ea at The Good Guys Hobart. Sorry, can't remember the exact amount. When they get back from holidays I'll be helping set them up!

Android M upgrade is confirmed in Motorola's blog

…But the Gen 3 is not listed yet on their Australian upgrade support page!!

    • +4

at $230 it was probably gen2/8GB/1GB ram

      • +1

Unless he meant $320, but did a typo

    • You bought the obsolete model.

      • -2

Calling the 2nd gen "obsolete" is a bit over the top.

        • -1

Only 3G no LTE is obsolete.

        • +1

          @ca6leguy:

As with most dual SIM phones, the secondary SIM is 2G. Now that'll be obsolete with 2 out of 3 providers in a few years' time.

        • @ca6leguy:
By your reckoning every phone on the market with no LTE is obsolete ?
          BS.

Don't confuse lack of your must-haves with "obsolescence".

        • 1GB isn't obsolete, it's ancient.

      • the 2nd gen moto g is getting marshmallow this year

    • +4

oops - I meant to say a little under $330 for the 3rd Gen with 16Gb. Sorry!

  • +2

Just nit pick here. You mean micro SD card slot, not SD card slot.

    • Thanks. Fixed. What was I thinking putting a full SD slot on a phone :D

  • looking for a deal on Moto X Style, but now it only seems like Vodafone has it

Seeing that Motorolla is a "Chinese" company now, don't other 'real' chinese companies offer more value?

    • exactly look at Xiaomi

I'm looking at the oneplus one (1st gen).

        • oneplus one is also good although they may have some quality control issues and invite/availability problems…

Warranty? There are many people who'd only buy phones from Australian vendors.
I know that usually, phones suffer DOA or they tend to not break (within a reasonable time frame), but having that option is a plus that many people wouldn't want to forgo.

Though that said, I personally think most newly released budget/mid-range phones are worse than older gen flagships in terms of what they offer (older ones tend to get discounted a lot, making them a nice option).

      • usually, phones suffer DOA

        Really?

        Warranty is a valid point…

        • What I meant to say was, either they DOA or they tend to not die for a reasonable amount of time (the U shaped graph for rate of failure, DOAs and other potential faults make high failure rate at beginning, but they tend to be fine for awhile if you've received a decent one until they start to fail due to the age of the device and other things).

      • +3

Warranty is a major part of the purchase, and it rightfully should be when you are spending hundreds of dollars.

I'd rather spend a little bit more for the peace of mind of returning to a store and consulting warranty issues with them (whilst being covered one way or another by consumer laws in Australia), than face the dreaded alternative of having a keyboard war with someone halfway across the world, not having any legal protections, proving my point with photos/videos/any other evidence a Chinese supplier asks for (who, by the way, may simply choose not to do anything without any possible legal recourse), and then either 1) having them totally deny it's the device's fault, or 2) paying shipping costs to have the POS sent back to them (and then refer back to 1).

    • Yep. Check the Bluboo XTouch. US$150 presale on Wednesdays (~AUD210).
      5" FHD, 3000maH, 3GB RAM 32GB, MT6753 quad-core, dual-SIM or 1-SIM+SD card, 5.1, fingerprint reader, LTE, 2.5D gorilla glass 3.

Question : What would I do if something goes wrong with it?

  • +3

moto g was good back in the day but nowadays xiaomi phones are much better value, look at the mi4c. I used to love stock android lots but i bought a xiaomi and am enjoying their take on android, plus they have good build quality with good HDR camera modes. The only real positive to this deal is local warranty and waterproof. Even the 'updates' advantage might be lost, the new Moto is not too keen on fast upgrades as evidenced by them dropping the Moto X 2014 and Moto E 2015 support

  • Does this have a removable battery?

    • Only if you drop it really hard. :-)

      • +2

So it's got a removable screen as well? Now that's cool :-D

    • Non-removable

  • +2

Walted ages for these to come out out but now I'm over it. Really want moto x style or sony xperia m5 - 1080p for extra $120~ love the constant moto updates. - this moto g 1st gen started on 4.3 and now runs smoothly in 5.1.1

    • -4

      extra $120

      Whoa big spender right here

  • +1

GSMArena gives this phone a very good battery life rating. Interesting. Looks like a pretty good phone overall from a familiar brand with local warranty, but I think Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 is probably more worth it overall.

The plus points for this appear to be better battery life, local warranty and smaller screen (down to preference).

    • Picked up this phone last week and am definitely loving the longer battery life!

It is a little bit fat but otherwise seems like a great low cost phone.

  • Anyone can help to confirm if dual sim are both 4g or at least 3g on slot 2? I have the 2nd gen n loving dual sim 3g on both sims. Any other phone with slot 2 at least 3g? Thanks

    • most phones are not dual 3g. its usually a 3g/2g or 4g/2g arrangement. What they do say is that you can pick which one to get 3g or 4g from, regardless of slot. But only one is active at a time. I'd question whether your G2 has dual 3g either..

      • Yup i understand only 1 slot active at a time. I used to have LG G3 dual sim, and slot 2 was marked "2G", which only worked in 2G. With my G2, i can switch off data on slot 11, activate data on slot 2 and i will have 3G on slot 2. So wonder if the 3rd gen is the same. Thanks.

  • Yes the Snapdragon 410 seems to be quite good on battery. I managed to break 10 hours on screen time out of the $40 Huewai Y550 which uses the same SoC. :)

Wait for price drop into the ~250 range after xmas, it retails for 179 in the US.

    • +1

$179 usd is the 1gb ram, 8gb version. This is not. I understand this model retails for around $220 usd

  • +2

Wouldn't mind one of those Good Guys/Ebay 20% off sales right about now….

    • +1

      The time has come

      • Thanks for the heads-up mate. Would have missed it otherwise! ANy idea if the tax invoice that you get from TGG shows the "full price" or the "discounted price"? Am heading overseas in January - if the tax invoice shows the full price then I could claim TRS too ;)

  • +1

Someone posted this phone for $349 a little while ago and got ripped a new one.

Same deal for a $1 cheaper and it gets 42+ votes…strange to say the least. Or is it because it's got the Good Guys in the name, so a subconscious assumption it must be a good deal?

    • To which vendor was the previous deal associated with?

    • +2

      herd mentality

    • I think you make a fairly good point. This phone at $348 isn't an outstanding bargain, you are saving $15-$20, or about 5%.

But there was a lot of anticipation about the phone, so perhaps people are happy to see it already available a LITTLE cheaper than originally indicated.

Me? I'm waiting to purchase this phone at a price starting with a "2" :) EBAY 20% OFF + CASHREWARDS + TRS is my goal!

Overpriced phone, bad specs, other better alternatives
