      Wow lol though could at least get 10% off this one making it $53.10, then 5% off that with gift cards bringing it to $50.44, then a further $1 cashback

      Ozbargain proud? ;)

      • Level up

  • +1

    Need to buy the base as well?

    • +1

      the one @nocure posted at bunnings includes the base

      • not a weighted base, might be good to double check

  • "Weighted base sold separately SKU: MAS_101176048" for $33.40. The picture for the umbrella looks like you need 4 of these??

    • Or 4 pavers…

      • Pavers would be good to increase the weight of the base if it had one, however if it is just the pole making contact with the ground then the pavers won't be able to hold it downwards.

        • The umbrella comes with a cross base (listed in the specs as "Steel cross stand").. the linked "bases" above are just fancy plastic weights that fit over the cross.

        • -3

          Just steal one of those concrete-filled plastic things they use to hold up temporary fences.

      • +1

        2 bags of pool salt.

        • +3

          Nah just get the missus to hold it.

        • +2

          @MaMan:

          But then the umbrella has to be in the kitchen…

        • +4

          @Spackbace:
          No.no.no… bring the BBQ to her. Weight of the Esky could also help her while she is turning the Meat.

        • +1

          @MaMan:
          Nice deflection virgin

      • 15kg each x 4 going from the pic?
        Or the 60kg concrete one?

        • No idea :/

          But the Bunnings bases look heaps better!

        • +1

          @Spackbace: I'd hope that it's not 4 x $33 for each weight. $130 of weights for a $55 umbrella LOL

        • +2

          @nafe: but without the weighted base your $55 umbrella ceases to be an umbrella and instead becomes a $55 airborne public liability tester

      • be careful when looking at bases, the ones listed here are not compatible. Check out the link on the Masters website for the correct base

        • Was referring to those for the Bunnings umbrella, which is bigger for cheaper (before additional discounts on the Masters one)

          As has been pointed out, the Masters base is pretty lousy and at least the Bunnings one already comes with a base!

        • Can you confirm require 4 off bases @ $33.40ea?

        • +1

          @Steptoe:
          minimum 2 x 15kg bases, you can also use 4 big pavers which are about $9 each or you can bolt it to the ground

        • @HunterOfBargains20:

          Thanks. So as pictured it will be 4 off @ $33.40ea

        • @Spackbace: again be careful when looking at bases as the information you are providing is incorrect

        • @HunterOfBargains20:

          IF you are getting the 4 bases, that will bring the umbrella to $192.60.

          Cheaper alternative here maybe?

        • @Matego: you would only need 2 bases, you also have the cheaper option of using 4 pavers.
          The ikea one also needs 64L of sand, i'm not sure how much that would be.

        • Surely water would be a better option for the Ikea one? Free plus easier to empty if trying to move or pack away for winter. Too bad if it isn't sealed well enough for water I guess.

          I use 4 pavers from Masters ($5.50 each) for the ALDI 3m cantilever I bought last year and works well. For very windy days though I recommend adding another two pavers on top.

    • +1

      That's just to catch the mugs.
      Use whatever weights you have lying around. A few $5 paving slabs will do, and you can choose something to match you existing patio paving.

      What sort of idiot would spend $130 on weights for a $59 umbrella?

    • +6

      Great. Finally I can put all of those eneloops to good use.

  • Both the Bunnings and Masters ones look great. I'd like one for my balcony, but not sure if there is a risk either one of these may blow over and hurt someone.

    Does anyone have experience with these kinds of things and can offer advice?

    Edit: didn't realise you had to buy the base separately.

    • Depends how securely you can secure it to the balcony, how high your balcony is and what sort of winds you typically see.
      With weighted bases, these are pretty stable on level ground. obviously if you're on level 30 windward side of a tall apartment block, the intensity of the wind is typically going to be higher than at ground level.

  • How much is it normally? Thinking to get one but I'd like to know if it's a good deal :)

  • The one in Bunnings by @nocure is $55 for 3m and includes base (based on the website. Haven't visited the store yet)

    The masters' is $59 and the base is $33 (either each or per 4)
    But either way it brings the total to at least $88.

    So I am not sure if this is a good deal or am I missing something.

    • The masters one also includes a base…"Steel cross stand" but not weights..

      • this is the same with the Bunnings one

  • +3

    …hmmm hidden base costs huh?
    this 'deal' is starting to look a little 'shady' :P

    • +1

      NO!
      Whoever started the "no base " rumour can't read!

      • +5

        so you're saying there's no base to that rumour?

        Glad to clear things up for you :)

  • These things definitely need plenty of weight to hold them down.
    A few pavers doesn't cut it when it gets slightly windy and the umbrella becomes a great big sail.

    A few cinderblocks and a rope tied to the fence works well enough though

    • or you can potentially bolt them down

    • A few pavers doesn't cut it when it gets slightly windy

      You are using the wrong pavers. They are designed for 60x60cm concrete pavers.

      But these umbrellas are not to be left up between use. A good sea breeze will shred them.

  • Is it "Canteliver" or "Cantilever"? Masters website uses both spellings.

    • Cantilever

  • I just noticed these are now down to $49

  • This model of cantilever umbrella has been superseded with a new version that has an arm from the mast tip to the top of the umbrella (the new style sold at Aldi 22/11).

    Be careful with this old version as the crank handle is quite weak and easily breaks - so don't over-wind it!

    Also it's worth investing in a cover or make sure you apply some paint/lacquer over all the screws as they rust after a couple of years (mine last about 2.5 years).

    I purchased the new version but picked up a cover off ebay for $28 (get the cover with a rod so it's easy to put on).
