$2 "Hub" Brand 16GB Micro Drive USB 3.0 @ Woolworths

2490

Cheap usb micro drive. Got tempted while waiting for my click and collect nighthawk router. They've got about 19 on the shelf at Double Bay NSW. Not sure if store specific Mod: Appears to be Australia wide, stock levels vary.

Cheaper than the $8 listed previously..

    None at Glen Waverley.
    None at Forest Hill.

  • avoid these, just get a decent one from your local computer/it shop

way slower than my 10 years old LG usb stick (2.0), and it died completely after few uses (1.5 weeks), now it doesn't show up in any computers.

going to try and get a refund today, but i threw out the packaging… sigh

  • Not $2 at Toormina Woolworths it is advertised at $10 ea saving $20.

  • They've removed them from the website. Must of had orders for hundreds or thousands of units.

    LOL:

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Hub-It-Storage-USB-3-0-Micro-Driv…

They've replaced 'Exclusively at Woolworths' to eBay.

    Gold!

    • a**hole!

  • +1

My local had none left, so I asked about the 32GB drives as there was no ticket on the shelf for those - they sold it to me for $4.
It's not USB 3.0, but it is retractable. Write speed maxxed out about 7.4 MBps. Read speed is better at 22MBps and deleting files takes several seconds. Priced about right for $4 I reckon.

  • +2

Wow already on eBay and gumtree… So many new accounts.

  • all gone at Maroochydore Big Top and Plaza

Went to a store near Newcastle today. They're selling for $15 now

    • +1

      You scanned this product?
Price on shelf was wrong at some stores.

      Others report buying ok today.
I'm surprised there is stock left.

      • Must have restocked overnight.

    • That one is USB2.0

    • Picked up 4 @ Glendale woollies today. Was still one on the shelf… big ticket read $2

      • What! I stopped at the Morisset one on my way through before this and there were no tickets and they scanned at $15 :(

        • Try Toronto woolies?

        • Wrong product I'd say.

You are the only one reporting the price is $15. Others have pointed out you may be scanning wrong product.

        • You may have grabbed the usb2 ones they look the same at a glance. I did and I think they were $15

  • +1

Just bought fifteen of these. Geez

  • +2

Thanks OP. I scored the last 11 at Cessnock NSW at noon.

  • +3

Just got an Out of Stock - cancellation notice form Woolworth … ordered some last night for pickup today. This pick up order system is useless when I get an hour before the pick up a cancellation notice. Ah well … didn't really need them … saved money.

    • Yeah their system doesn't seem to link well to in store inventory does it.

    • +3

They don't reserve stock for your order.

Rather a staff member goes to shelf before pick up / delivery time. If others have already bought all stock by then you get cancellation then. Also if a later order is for earlier pick up, it will get your stock.

Inventory may not be correct even when you ordered (Bluetooth speaker box contained no speaker the other day, but still shows as available), and is unlikely to be what is left on shelf when order is packed.

So with popular deals, always best to order as pick up & set time as soon as possible. Or just get to store asap.

Email complaint & they may give you eGift Card or credit ;-)

  • Out of stock Parramatta, Rosehill, Bankstown, Padstow + Miranda

  • Was hoping to pick up one after work today but no dice. Oh well, it would have just been added to the pile of 16gb usb drives I've gotten from OzBargain anyway.

  • Thanks OP …just got 5 at Leura, NSW. About 5 left on shelf.

  • Spoke to Woolies said theyd get more stock on a Tuesday. Will be there around 7 is when they unload their docks. Placed a reserve. Doubt theyd be getting more in but Woolworths have said they have ordered more. This is Calamvale.

Ah! Found this thread! How did I miss it!! Went past Pakenham woolies to pick up some milk and walked past the tech aisle and stopped to look at all the stickers. Guy in front of me asks if I'm looking for 'the same thing'._O after a bit of a chat apparently there are 16 GB drives for sale at $2ea! He finds some hidden at the back of the 32GB boxes and grabs the lot before offering me some. I know you're an OzBargainer, not sure if you're here but if you are, thanks!

  • They are probably a class 4 SD Card? Or can someone confirm that they are class 10?

  • +2

Was able to find 1 at Toongabbie & Wentworthville. They were both not in any of the boxes and just lying flat on their own on the shelves. Make sure you check all the boxes and even behind and under. I also found an opened package one with the key missing… who steals a $2 item honestly? Where else but Blacktown!

  • Hub Bluetooth Keyboard is $8.00 (spotted in wow Surrey Hills). There were 2 units on the shelf this afternoon.

  • Worth getting a rain check for these?

    • With over 200 votes i think the answer is yes, i have been struggling to find stock and chances are they won't get more in. Why clear out the 16gb but not the 8 or 32?

  • Just got 8 at Geelong West (Pakington Street) There is a box left.

  • Out of Stock email this morn…ordered Wednesday afternoon…will request rain check or equivalent item…i'll see what they have…

  • None at Hawthorn unfortunately.
There was a box of Verbatims on the shelf instead.

    • None at Camberwell either.
I think you can check stock by using the Click & Collect option but who knows if that's reliable.
Good news is the Click & Collect shows many stores with stock. I don't have a car so travelling is a hassle but there are dozens of shops with the sticks it seems.

Also I noticed there are other products with similar discounts. Almost worth posting a new deal over.
      Aux cable $1 from $5
      Earphones $1 from $7
Roll up silicon keyboard $2 from $10
      Card reader $2 from $9

These things can be bought from China at the same price, but I imagine these products are higher quality.

  • Had a whole box at Perth CBD Enex100 Store

    • They must have restocked i went on Thursday and they had none!

  • +1

eBay are flooded with these now.
    Who's digital mango ebay seller?
and yunodie-computers has 10 for sale at $27 and another sale for $50 each!

  • This is a dumb question.. but how do you retract the USB? >.<

    • +4

Retracts automatically for me when I pull it out of a USB socket.

    • +3

You are not alone, I was figuring out how to retract the USB.
Just pull it out the USB male side lightly, it will be retracted if you accident to push out.

  • Got the last 3 in store this afternoon. 1 at Avalon and 2 at Dee Why, northern beaches Sydney. Still plenty more expensive 8 & 32 Hub sticks as well as 8 & 16gb Verbatim USB sticks.

Feel sorry for those who missed out since there are obviously sellers who purchased all they could find and profiting from them by flogging them at higher prices on eBay.

  • +1

They're not just on clearance, more stock arrived tonight at my store.

    9 left at Dickson ACT

  • More stock arriving in stores, the warehouses must be loaded with the junk :)

  • +3

Yeah, more stock arriving. Two woolies i tried the other day had none, today had 5 and 12 respectively. Stocked up on a couple. Good to lend to people when you know they probably wont ever come back.

  • +2

Heaps of 'em at my local, grabbed 3 for myself and 3 for the old man.

    • Which location is that please? Thank you.

      • Port Lincoln. Lol
Doubt there'd be too many from here on OZB.

  • My local woolies called me, said they have stock reserved for me :)!

  • 1 just died 7 to go. Error is not showing in file explorer and in disk management reporting zero capacity. Unable to find any manfacturer software to reset/repair unit.

    • I hate that. Somebody gave me a 64G back when 64G was huge, and it only works in some devices or after updating drivers or some such mucking around in device manager.
I don't mind if they are slow, but they have to work!

  • Blacktown Woolies have some on the shelf, bought a few this morning.

  • still plenty left over at Woolworths Wentworthville

  • 20+ at Garden City QLD (on 02/11/2015 at around 2pm)

  • Anyone know if these are these still scanning at the discounted price, regardless of what the price on the shelf says?

    • +2

      Yes they will scan $2

      • Awesome thanks. Just wasn't sure if the in-store prices where starting to change back after the online price was updated.

        • No problem. Hope you managed to get some :)

        • @kazispeed: Yep, managed to get two at Thurgoona (near Albury) :) Only two left there now!

For anyone still wondering - I can confirm that the shelf price was $18ea but the scanned price was still $2ea.

      • My local store they scan at $15

        • Did you scan the correct product? Wrong product I'd say.

You are the only one reporting the price is $15, since 29/10/2015 - 11:42. Others have pointed out you may be scanning wrong product.

  • There's a whole new box at the original Neutral Bay store. No shelf sticker but scanning at $2. I picked up a few.

  • There's a whole new box at Lidcombe NSW as well.

  • +1

they back in stock in burwood.
    bought couples :P
    http://files.ozbargain.com.au/upload/81226/34596/img-2015110…

I only need couple, if someone live near by and wants 1 (to give chance for all ozbargainers) let me know. happy to post it if you are willing to pay for postage.

    • That's Burwood (NSW) folks not Burwood (VIC) ;-)

  • Got the last 2 at Hoppers Crossing. Thanks OP!

  • Just bought one from Middle Camberwell, VIC. Still one more there.

  • Stores do seem to be restocking, but they aren't lasting long.

  • +1

Just be aware not storing anything valuable in this USB, I used mine to store music and played on the car stereo, after a few days it just lost all the file, just like it reformatted itself.

    • Well, on the back on it, it says "Money Back Guarantee: If you're not happy with your purchase, simply bring it back and we will exchange or refund."

      • that's not my point. You get what you paid for so be aware.

        • +2

"You get what you paid for"…
So those who bought at original $19 price got a better product???
          A strange point ;-)

You checked with a computer that data was actually lost & not just a read issue with head unit?

Could the car stereo have had trouble & wiped / corrupted the data - I've had equipment do that.

And how much did you pay for the car stereo - "You get what you paid for" ;-)

        • @Infidel: yep, I stand by my statement, those paying original price should know that these generic branded stuff like this is worthless and for that price they better look for something else. That's why woolies is clearing out them.

I've been using various usb on the stereo and none behave like that, occasionally they couldn't read the track but no data lost. And you should know that stereo is read-only device so it is very unlikely to be able to do what you suggest.

        • +1

I don't think these unbranded sticks are wroth it at there original price. If I was to pay that, may as well go for a more reputable brand name product. $2 is ok for testing but certainly wouldn't store important stuff on it without a backup elsewhere.

        • @lgacb08: It wouldn't actually surprise me if the failure rate of these is higher than you'd expect.

It's interesting that only the 16gb sticks are on sale when Woolies also have 8gb and 32gb versions. It may be that they're finding people returning the 16gb versions because of an systemic issue with them, so they're trying to get rid of them all. People paying $2 are much less likely to complain than those paying $18.

        • @Payne:
          Interesting point.

There seems little reason to discount just the 16GB in the range. The price reduction seems ridiculous - they would have likely cleared at 50% off.

Given they are clearing other Woolies hub products, the other memory devices are about the only products not on clearance. They may continue supplying those devices.

        • @Infidel: Indeed. I'm wondering if the failure rate is pretty high across the board with a lot of the HUB products. Those not on sale are probably within tolerable limits.

Here's a question - has anyone actually tried filling a few of these drives up to their maximum capacity? Surely the supplier hasn't 'faked' the capacity on some of these drives. That would explain files vanishing by themselves. Unlikely I guess, but it's the first thing that came to mind.

          [edit: typo]

        • @Payne: Another interesting point. Worth testing.

But has high failure rate been established as a fact?

We would be seeing negs for deal & lots of complaints by now if that was the case. We don't like faulty or fake memory devices on OzBargain.

245 + votes with none revoked, & no neg yet in 8 days - indicates no major issues found. (Or we have low expectations for a $2 device.)

From a retailer's perspective, having poorly selling & low levels of stock is best solved by reducing prices on clearance. The retail real estate tied up by these generally low value, low turn over stock is far too valuable.

Other USB & memory card stock may be selling better & may be kept as a continuing stocked product.

        • @Infidel: Nope, the failure rate probably won't be apparent (if it exists) until people really start using them, assuming they actually come back here and leave a comment. Just going off the comments from @beck13 and @lgacb08 above so far. Might be interesting to keep an eye on the ebay accounts that are selling these off though :)

But the discounts do seem a little too good to be true, and you know what they say, if it's too good to be true… :)

Having said that, I bought a couple but I do take @lgacb08's point that I won't be putting anything on them that I actually want to keep.

        • @Payne:
Would anybody, ever, use a usb stick as the sole source of valuable files?

To me, the use case for these is the same as any USB drive. The only factor to consider is the inconvenience of it failing and having to go back and get a new copy.

        • @SlickMick: Probably a bad choice of words from me. 'Keep' as in move from one location to another and expect at the other end, the USB drive will work. Like a work presentation in a different city.

But people do some silly stuff with technology, like store photos from an overseas holiday on a cheap USB drive until they get home or wait a few months before moving the photos to their external hard drive and/or PC.

Anyway, I was just agreeing with lgacb08 that I wouldn't be relying on these drives for anything important.

        • Just filled 7 of them full, will let you know if I have a problem on Monday.

        • @Payne:
Filled 1 to capacity with video files last night. Plugged in this morning - not recognised, won't mount ;-)

Half filled second one, works ok.

Needs further testing, but looks suspicious!

        • @lgacb08:
lol, my first time using device in computer - failed after filling.
So you have a point that these seem to fail for no reason. Have given your comment a + ;-)

        • @dealbreaker:
Didn't seem to have any issue with the 7 I filled. I did repartition them before I used them.

  • May have bought 20 more today….

  • Bought the last 5 at woolies in mattraville today.

  • Forest Lake was OOS Saturday, but had 9 last night. Now they have 0 again :) Priced at $16.50, register says $18… discounted to $2. winning :)

  • Just grabbed 5 at Morissette. Thanks OP

  • Got 7 from WW at Mirrabooka Shopping Centre WA this morning. Still 3 left. No $2 sell ticket. Probably that is why no one grab it.

  • Plenty left at Bennett Springs WA. The tag suggest it might expire tonight (11/10) so get on it if u haven't done so!

    • The Woolworths app lists it as "On sale until 05.01.16", along with some of the other Hub IT stuff (but not all - e.g. some say 24.11.15 instead).

  • I returned 5 the other day to repurchase using my $10 popcorn rewards. Tried to do the same today (bought another batch of 14 popcorn packets and have another 5 USB sticks) but they now scan at $18 lol.

  • Just bought 12 at Woolies Leura NSW — I thought they were $8 so was going to try one or two then found at the self-serve checkout that they were still registering as $18 - $16 so went after the rest in the pretty messy stationery section. Again, no $2 sale ticket and they were mixed up with the 8GBs. (Maybe 6-8 of the 8GB for $8 still there and likely to remain so.)

Probably boxes of the 16GB sloshing around the system and turning up more or less anywhere.

  • I bought 15 of these today from Chatswood Woolies. Was very suprised to see on shelf as I checked this Woolies when the initial deal struck.
No price tags on shelf, got it price checked, when she said $2 I nabbed them.

So today I bought toilet paper and USBs total savings was $243.00 not a bad Monday afternoon effort.

May want to remove Expired from title as these still seem to be floating around at OP's price.

    • nicely done

      • Thank you sir.
