One by Wacom $39.99 @ ALDI 4/11

1690

USB Artists tablet for Mac or Windows [ETA: and Linux!]. Learn more at Wacom. ALDI don't specify but one would expect it's the "small" version. No touch/trackpad or express keys.

"One by Wacom" is not usually sold in Aus/US/EU, but price in Asia seems to be ~$90 AUD. So good price for a bottom-of-the-line Wacom USB drawing tablet.

Note: This is an ALDI "Special Buy" so won't be on sale until 4/11/15

      • I'm tempted to grab one for osu however retrospect, it will probably become more obsolete than the xbox controller I got just for Ori and the Blind forest :-)

    • I think I tried StarCraft 1 as a joke with touchscreen and a wacom stylus (Surface Pro 1). Gave up after 2 minutes.

    • I can't recommend this for gaming. I've tried (I have RSI and can't use a regular mouse) and it's better than a trackpad for "mouse" input to PC games, but it isn't great.

Note that this doesn't have a screen, so it won't be a "touch screen" or tablet PC. Those Wacom tablets go for >$1k.

  • Haven't bought stuff from Aldi in a while. You reckon these will be sold out if I don't go first thing Wednesday morning?

    • I got a feeling they will be lol

    • Don't forget that most Aldi stores will have low stock to begin with. I think of them about as rare as Aldi car stereos and netbooks. Aldi have sold graphics tablets many times in past years but I never saw any left over stock with the clearance stickers.

  • +1

Does anyone know if every Aldi store will have these? The larger Aldi stores are a fair distance away from me and the closest a bit smaller

    • All should get stock. The amount of stock will vary of course.

    • Get to store a opening time. Item may be held at checkout. Check straight away for parts if held on central shelf. SADLY from experience!

  • +1

    No delivery option?

    • Aldi = no.

    • the point of the random stuff aldi sells is to encourage people to come into the store to buy something cheap they don't really need. these people are more likely to buy other crap they don't need, making aldi an overall profit by flogging a few wacom's for cheap. woolies have cottoned on to this with their 'free click and collect' ebay marketing.

  • Can it be rooted?

    • +7

      If you are flexible.

    • This isn't a tablet PC, it doesn't have an OS. It's like a mouse, trackpad, or trackball.

      • It was a joke.

        • Ah, sorry. I just didn't want people to be confused… I know some people will be… "where is the on button" :(

        • @lupiter:
Don't be sorry. It was a fair point.

  • I am interested in purchasing one of these to write notes in. Does anyone know if this is suitable for writing math equations/short sentences? I am interested in using this to replace the mouse input for drawing in the OneNote application (PC). However, I am open to using other applications which may be more suitable for the type of work I am interested in.

    • How well you can write with this depends on how well you can cope with the physical disconnect. It's kind of like drawing on a overhead projector while looking at the projection on the wall. It's probably better than using a mouse (I find it so with mine, which is an older different model but same style) but it's not as good as say, writing on a Tablet PC, like the Microsoft Surface.

    • It'd probably work once you practised with it for a while, but I think the natural choice here would be a good quality tablet PC that comes with a stylus. They have the advantage that you can actually draw on the screen itself, which resembles handwriting a lot more. You don't really need the pressure sensitivity or resolution that a Wacom tablet provides.

That said, for $40 it could be worth a shot.

  • What is in the software bundle?

    • That varies wildly. Even what you see on the official Wacom store as the bundled software isn't always whats included (frustratingly). There's usually some kind of painting, drawing, or photo editing application for Windows that is less than stelar, and some Wacom software. I wouldn't buy it for the software.

Once upon a time they came with lite versions of Corel Painter, but back then the bottom-of-the-line Wacom tablet cost >$200.

    • I just got back from Aldi Hurstville at opening time which is 8:30am and the bundled software's main feature is Artrage 3.5 sofware key.

  • +1

Please put the start date in the description as well - walked to ALDI and was wondering where the Wacom was - grabbed the catalogue then saw the date…

    Thought it was ozbargained.

    • +2

Haha I put it in the title but I've put it in the description also now.

    • +1

Haha did exactly the same thing

  • I have been using my Note Edge with Virtual tablet app to draw on the PC monitor and believe me, the learning curve is steeeep! Have been eyeing on wacom for a while but realize now that this screen is only as big as the Note screen.

Contemplating on whether to get this or not. Anyone who could compare wacom to Note+app drawing experience?

    • It's probably pretty similar. The pen will be a bit larger, if you find that more comfortable. A nicer method is something that puts the PC screen onto the Galaxy Note, so it's more like a Surface Pro… or well, a really tiny laggy Surface… say a Asus Vivotab Note.

      • I'd disagree. I've used the note edge and I wouldn't even bother comparing it to a dedicated tablet. Sure, it give handwriting input which is neat but a tablet/pen has pressure sensitivity, hotkeys and precision.

        • +1

It does all that :P (well, hotkeys, I am not too sure about). Wacom tech used in Note Edge supports 2048 pressure level sensitivity and recognises tilt (I think tilt function was introduced with Note 4). It uses same technology that's used in Tablet PCs with Wacom Pen (i.e. I can use my pen from Surface Pro 1 and use it with Note Edge, though I am not sure what the pressure sensitivity level it would be able to go with).

  • +7

Man Aldi sell some incredible stuff.

One week it's horse riding gear, the other it's ski stuff, then Wacom tablets.

And don't forget you can get milk and bread from there too.

    Unbelievable.

  • I wonder what kind of drivers these come with. ie. If it works with windows 8.1 or 10.

A quick look on Wacom's website shows that the latest driver for CTL series is windows 8 (other drivers sometimes say 8.1 so I don't know if this means the driver for this tablet supports anything above 8):

    https://www.wacom.com/en-us/support/product-support/drivers

    • +2

There are drivers for Windows 8 and 10, see the Wacom Asia-Pacific support site: https://www.wacom.asia/en/tablet-drivers?tid_1=249&tid=258

    • Just installed mine. Works with XP forward, according to their site.

Bunch of bits installed besides the direct driver, including a pen input dock and some gesture control stuff.

Main thing is it works with Photoshop OK on the pressure sensitive side of things.

  • Is the pen that comes with this tablet compatible with software tablets like an iPad?

    • nope

  • Some guy just bought 15 tablets this morning… I would say that each store possibly have 20 in stock as I overheard the staff.

    • +3

He'd probably be able to sell for a profit tbh. Thats not the ozbargainer's way :(

      • I was afraid that I wasn't even going to have the chance to buy one lol.

    • That was at Bonnyrigg by the way. The bundled software with the tablet is Art Rage 3.5~

    • Someone has popped up on eBay this morning with 10 for sale at $109 each. He normally only sells used games. Not cool.
Wonder if it was the same guy…

At least I got mine. I was at Macquarie centre at opening. They had it at the register. No idea how many more were there.

      • I agree. Not cool.

However a few of these dudes might be buying them in bulk for a good cause. eg. Teachers.

Writing / drawing devices could really benefit young children.

Who knows. Maybe I'm too idealistic.

    • A couple of listings on Ebay that are probably by profiteers. Low number of sales and listings that likely coincide with date that ALDI released them.

This one even has the ALDI product code pictured.

      This one less clear.

  • North Sydney out of stock even at store opening time

    • +1

Head over to Aldi Hurstville thay still have stock but better hurry there is a chance that they might be out of stock out by 5:00pm or so I'd reckon as when I was there 3 had being sold 2 bought by me and 1 by another fellow Ozbargainer.

  • Just picked one up from Fountain Gate - They had about 20-30 in stock. Plenty of ozbargainers outside though xD

  • Also just got one. Thanks OP.

  • Got 2 at opening time @ Aldi Hurstville thxs OP :)

  • Score! My Aldi had lots. Bought some other stuff (groceries) with it. AND it didn't scan through the register! Well, he scanned it, but it didn't pick it up for some reason. He didn't notice and neither did I till I checked the docket outside. Got it free! I thought my bill was cheap. I feel bad though…

    • Which Aldi Store is it fellow Ozbargainer? Since I got 2 (one for me and one as a early Christmas present for my brother) from Aldi Hurstville.

      • Aldi Port Macquarie NSW. Probably too far for you to come.

        • Ah yes true as usual country, rural and regional Aldi stores usually have alot in stock even after the sale date due to low demand for such a niche product like the Wacom tablet. Also the reason for it might not show is that it might still be locked from the register since stores open at various times depending on location and this happen with another guy purchasing the $500 4K TV @ Aldi Hurstville.

    • +2

Go back and offer to pay for it. If they process the payment, you'll feel good about it :) And if they say not to worry about it, then you'll feel even better.

      • -3

Screw that, if a business miss charged you they wouldn't feel bad about it and call you after. Its up to a business to insure they have proper process to prevent this and if they don't its a simply a loss for them.

        • +1

I was merely offering advice to @samcro given that he said he feels bad. He doesn't have to take it.

  • None left at new Lidcombe mall - checked on opening.

  • None at Broadway either. They had less than 10 to begin with according to the staff.

  • Only 1 left at Fairfield NSW AFAIK.

Had a peek in the box.

    Ask at the register.

  • None at Dubbo NSW at 9:30, the lady said they were all gone, I bet one person bought the lot. :/

    I'm disappointed.

  • Thanks for the post OP.

I picked one up today. I thought they would be in the locked cabinet with the other electronic things, but they were near all of the art stuff/colouring books etc.

EDIT: I got mine at the Drysdale store on the Bellarine peninsula (VIC) at around 11am. There were 4 or 5 left on the shelf, but the guy at the register said he had another box full to unpack.

  • Nabbed 2 at maroubra. Ask at the register.

  • Went to Forest Hill, Victoria. This might apply to other places and/or help people.

I got there at open and they were not putting it out with the other specials.

Instead, they were keeping them at the registers to sell to people when they are paying for items (if they ask for it).

(You don't have to buy other items but you do have to join the queue)

  • Tried Ashfield campsie lakemba …. All gone. Disappointed

  • Is there any restocking happening in the future? or is that it because it seems its going to be hard to find the last few

  • None in North Sydney.

  • Damn went to an Aldi near work at 8.45 but there was a long line at the register and I didn't think it will be held there.
I have a Surface Pro for personal use but want a drawing tablet for work too.
If anyone didn't end up liking their tablet I'm keen to buy it off..

  • Anyone figured what the glossy side is supposed to be for?

I can't seem to find anything to indicate what it's for. I've touched it and it doesn't scroll or anything.

    • +3

Nope, but I did find a reasonable online manual for it at

      https://www.wacom.asia/onebywacom/OnebyWacom_user_Manual_201…

which shows you what the tag is for and how to have the tablet only correspond to part of the monitor space (useful if you have multi-monitors)

    • The glossy side are the 2 buttons.

By default the button closest to the the tip is Pan/Scroll. In an application with a scrollbar (like your web browser) press the button first, then put the tip down on the tablet while sliding the pen up and down - the screen should scroll as you slide the pen.

The other button is set up as a right click button.

You can configure what each button does in the configuration software, but I think the defaults are most useful.

    • I think it's just a decorative covering over where the controller chips and such are.

      • Yeah….I dont think it does anything. Thanks guys!

  • +4

cant find one at around 6pm. a simple search on ebay shows so many new listings of this tablet for $90. lame as hell.

    • +2

      I just checked myself.
It's such a damn shame that people feel the need to profiteer of this great deal from Aldi.

  • there are three last on the shelf at northstrathfield, brought 2 yeah

  • +2

I couldn't download ArtRage Lite (superseeds ArtRage 3.5) from Wacom, however I managed to download it from artrage.com after registering the product key.

    • +1

Thanks, I had the same problem and was able to download the software through artrage.com as well.

  • Got the last one at Westfield South Morang VIC. Was under the cashier table. So lucky

  • Hornsby NSW - sold out

  • 4 left at Carseldine QLD. Had to ask at the counter though as they weren't put out.

  • Got one. Anyone know if the forced "free upgrade" from ArtRage 3.5 to Artrage Lite is really an upgrade or if we're missng out on features?

  • Can you write Chinese Character with it?

    • Yes, but you'll need some software. You can get applications like Bamboo/Wacom Scribe for Mac and PC which can interpret handwriting.

  • Edit: fixed

  • sooooo, who here ended up buying one? how is it? I havnt been to Aldi lately… hope they have one in the west of Melbourne. I would like to play around with one of these, my creative side you see

    • +3

I bought one, it's much better than my old Graphire 3, and for $40 it's not a huge investment if you don't like it. I haven't used any of the included software (well, I've used it before, and don't like it), but it works lovely with Manga Studio (aka Clip Studio). It's nice and light, the pen is a good thickness, the cable is detachable from the device and looks to be just micro USB so if you lose it no biggie. I had a bit of trouble with the drivers, but that's life, just make sure you get the latest from the website, don't bother with whatever it comes with on the disk.

The pen has a nice feel, and the button click is good. It has two buttons (default to right and middle click I believe) but no eraser, and there are no buttons on the tablet itself, so I assigned the upper button press to switch to eraser, which works nicely. The texture of moving the pen across the tablet surface is good, just a little bit of friction like a pencil on smooth paper, rather than feeling like moving a stick across a glass surface like with a tablet PC.

It comes with a few nibs, which you'll want to hold on to, and the strange ring is for pulling out the nib to replace it. Keep it safe!

I find that it's fine for sketching, and small movements, but I struggle to be precise with large movements. This is mainly a problem when inking large curving lines, the line will start in the right place but I struggle to get it to end where I want it. I don't have that problem on my tablet PC, however my laptop screen has much better contrast and colour accuracy than my tablet PC (never mind having 4x the ram and 2x cpu cores and is 64 bit).

I think this is an excellent product for someone who doesn't want to make the big investment in either a tablet PC (like a Surface) or a more advanced Wacom tablet (Intuos Pro or Cintiq). It's good for finding your feet in digital art, but remember that you'll have to be willing to work within the limitations of the device. For example, I'm not going to be inking with it, but it is good for painting work and okay for sketching. I also wouldn't connect it up to a computer with a big monitor, or your precision will drop again.

It's also very portable, and easy to slip into a bag to take with your laptop while travelling or heading to the coffee shop. Not quite as convenient as a Surface Pro, but if you already have a laptop it's a lot cheaper!

But be prepared to be disappointed with the stock levels. I didn't have any trouble getting one at opening time on the day, but a week later you're likely to be out of luck.

      • Thanks for the full on information! Im sure it will help a few others out there.

There wasnt any in my local Aldi and Im not going to rush around looking for them unless im passing by a store. SO hopefully another opportunity for one of these comes up soon.

        Cheers again,

      • silly question,

can you play fps games on it? like snap to headshot or mouse aim at the very least?

        • I don't think so. I did once try playing Portal, and it didn't work well. The pen position is absolute, not relative like a mouse. Better off with a joystick or a controller.

        • @lupiter: what do you mean by absolute?

        • @furythree: The position of the pen on the tablet matches the cursor on the screen. Pick up the pen and move it to the bottom left corner and the mouse jumps to the bottom left corner on the screen. If you picked up your mouse and put it down again somewhere else it wouldn't move, it only moves when you drag it over the mouse pad. If you end up in the bottom left corner of your mousepad, you might not be in the bottom left corner of the screen.

Here's a video of someone playing Portal 2 on a Wacom tablet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_teuxndj18

It's not impossible to use a drawing tablet to play PC games, but it's not designed for it.

        • @lupiter: oh thats what i intended. basically snap to headshot

but i can understand how that would not be very accurate

  • I brought one to replace the medion one from aldi, lets just say, while it is smaller, it is a lot better. Plus it works on mac unlike the medion

  • These are now $30
