yeah from reviews i read huge compression and not great quality on sale at dse for 198 now looks like it will become clearance item soon
I did a google comparison between Samsung HMX-U10 and Kodak Zi8. I ended up getting the Zi8 last week at Ted's Camera for ~$230. These are the reasons why I went for the Zi8 :
- Image stabilization
- HDMI
- battery swap out
- brighter more vibrant colors

Anyway, I'll be snowboarding in Niseko tomorrow and be strapping the Zi8 on my helmet. Unfortunately the Zi8 is not water resistant, so I'll be wrapping it with gladwrap.
Kodak recently came out with a successor to the Zi8 which is the Kodak PlaySport (which is waterproof). Unfortunately, it won't be available until March 2010.
one thing that's putting me off from the Zi8 is the mono microphone.. do you know if the U10 has a stereo mic (it does come with stereo speakers).. at least most of the Flips have stereo mics.. only prob is you can't use a memory card.. oh and none of these pocket hd video recorders have optical zoom :(

For the Zi8, u can plug in a external stereo microphone onto the 3.5 mm jack.
yeah i know.. but kinda defeats the purpose of being portable.. and u have to tape it or something to secure it lol

Verdict: "Overall the Samsung HMX-U10 is an attractive looking device which offers more options than many of its rivals. Unfortunately what it brings in superficial novelty it lacks in core strength. The HD footage is let down by focal range and the low light performance is poor. The power options might concern some as you won't be able to swap out batteries if you are filming on a day out.
Overall we found the Samsung HMX-U10 didn't offer the simplicity of the likes of the Flip Ultra HD or the performance offered by Kodak's Zi8, but it does win on novelty factors."
