  • Value is subjective. People could say that first class flights are a top value purchase.

My top value purchase might be a large $20 backpack. Must have saved me hundreds after 7 years of travelling budget airlines with carry on only. Still going strong.

This deal was pretty good value too. Eating isn't something we can go without.

    • My house - Converted a warehouse in Fitzroy 20 years ago. Sweet. Couldn't afford to buy near me now days.
    • My iPad mini 2 - use this thing everyday and you can download so many free/cheap apps for it.
    • My Kitchen cooking utensils - Wusthof Knives, Fissler saucepans, Staub and Chasseur cast iron cookwear, Corelle plates, Riedel glasses. I never go cheap on these things because, if you look after them, they last for years and make cooking/eating/drinking a joy.
    • My Crumpler bags - if you trash a zip they will repair it for you. Went through a lot of bum bags before I got onto Crumpler.
    • My travel pack. Tried the wheeled variety and the are a pain to move around stations, streets, etc. Strap on the travel pack and get going. (BTW I'm short, female and over 50; unless you are very elderly you don't have much excuse not to use one of these)

I only have one top item - lots of other purchases come joint second for me.

My Victorinox swiss army knife is my number 1 - it fits in my handbag (so I always have it with me) and I use it almost daily (mostly the scissors, tweezers, knives and can opener attachments).

I saw a documentary on free to air TV a few months ago about Victorinox and all the steps and quality control that goes into making their Swiss army knives.

    • Watches, too. Victorinox is big on quality, and reasonable in price. The 'Swiss Made' thing used to be a big thing back then due to renown watch movements and parts, but nowadays it's just a bandwagon label-y thing that doesn't mean much. I like to think of modern swiss made labels on newer watches being a homage and a piece of history of the older days.

    1) My house. Best investment ever after 10 years of renting. Glad I bought it. Living close to family members (10-20 mins drive) has been great too as we can easily catch up anytime.
    2) My bedroom suite from Oz Design and mattress. I love my bed. I get the best sleep, the mattress was from Myer and it's so comfy.
    3) My handheld dust buster by Dyson. Best thing ever and since getting it, I stopped using the big Dyson and I don't have to lug it up the stairs!
    4) My mobile phone. Samsung S6. Ever since I moved onto an android phone, I hardly ever use my laptop. Only use the laptop now to upload pictures from my camera etc.
    5) My Breville Mini Whizz. Chopping up garlic and onions has never been so easy. I like cooking, and flavour in my food.

  • Definitely my KitchenAid!
I use it almost weekly and I can imagine using it until I'm in a nursing home at which time I'll pass it down to my kids!
    It never misses a beat.

HP dv-6500 laptop bought "broken" off eBay for $22 (needed a charger) came with 4gb of ram.
Bought an all most new ozito electric mower off Gumtree for $30 - it came with a freshly upholstered vintage couch and a 1920's free standing lamp for free. Sold the electric mower for $50 3 months later.
$5 espresso machine for the office from eBay. Made around 250 coffees.

    1) My house - a 'perfect storm' of events, timing and luck led to the best bargain I'll likely ever get in my life.
    2) These $2.80 copper string fairy lights which saved my wedding from being ruined when the power went out.
    3) [Thrunite TN4A[(http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Thrunite-TN4A-Cree-XM-L2-NW-Neutr…) for $58 off Ebay - brightest 4xAA flashlight around. Looks like they've gone up in price now due to the AU dollar.
    4) Canon 50mm f1.8 lens for ~$100
    5) My Jabra Move Bluetooth wireless headphones for $92 from Officeworks

    In no particular order:
    - A little flip knife I impulse bought from Super Cheap Auto for about $4. Far more useful than I ever thought it would be, and came with a stack of replacement blades (over 4 years later, only onto my second one). It's big enough to open up stubborn packaging, but small enough not to worry about damaging the product.
    - Macbook Air - I know, Macs are expensive. But this honestly is the best laptop I've owned. The stock standard SSD means it fires up in no time, and the battery life is fantastic. Was a life saver in Uni, and still extremely useful for when I want to use a computer, but don't feel like sitting at my desk.
    - High Sierra Access Backpack - For $60, this backpack is fantastic. Admittedly when I first got it, I thought I had gone over board. The bag had so many little straps on it, that I wasn't even sure what the purpose of some of them were. But the bags ability to go from a large, rugged travel back pack to a slim, relatively discrete lap top bag is pretty damn amazing. I used it on a hike a few weeks after getting it, and it started raining. The moment I deployed the bags built in rain cover, I knew it was worth every cent.
    - Aeropress - Freed me from the world of instant coffee for ~$40. Need I say more?
    - IKEA Toolkit - You know how you see those little crappy tool kits in the plastic cases in IKEA, and you wonder who buys tools from there? Me, I do. I'm not a big DIY person, but every man needs a basic set of tools. So I saw a kit consisting of a wrench, pliers, screw driver (with interchangeable heads) and a hammer, for about $10. After 4 years of surprisingly regular use for many different jobs, none have broken and I rarely need to dip into the toolbox for any other tool.

    1. My Levi jeans - they last forever and stand up well to punishment. Previously my three main reasons for replacing pants were size, fashion, and stains. I've stopped growing, my weight is stable, blue jeans never go out of fashion, and I never spill food on then.

    2. My portable air conditioner - I have a health issue which makes air conditioning essential. I love having my own air conditioner.

    3. My iPad 4 - it's getting quote old now, but it still gets daily use. Decent novelty games, passable for browsing the web, and I have a Bluetooth keyboard so it makes checking email a breeze.

    4. My Dell 24" monitor - connects to my laptop, it has a good picture, an inbuilt USB hub, and decent resolution 1920x1200 iirc)

    5. My electric toothbrush - basic model, but I cannot imagine ever going back to a manual brush now

  • My Telstra Family & Friends iPhone 5 deal. $15/month handset repayments (nearly finished now), $10/month for calls, 1 GB free data. Been so happy with this! New phone, fast 4G, more data than I ever use, adequate call allowance for me.
