    HTPC? Don't you want a quiet , low-power drive for a HTPC secondary drive? And big. Are the 2TB green drives still a good buy?
    IIRC, WD red is the high-performance drive.
    Would a 2.5" drive be better? I use an external USB drive for media, and small SSD for primary.

      I don't know what other use it can be. it'd be a waste of space for NAS as you could just get a larger HDD for less price per TB. With green I think it nulifies the power-saving advantage as you will access the drive often in an HTPC

      • Greens park their heads every 8 seconds now.

        Putting them into a HTPC system drive will kill them pretty quick due to a high Load Cycle Count.

        • I believe you can change the parking with WDIDLE program. I have 4 3TB green in a RAID in my NAS and they work well after the long startup time each time you go to access it lol waiting for 4 drives to spin up and sync is annoying.

        • @bazzaa:

          Not really. I have a media server built with a mix if reds and greens.

          Once you start watching something the drive is in continuous use. The parking is no longer relevant.

          @4agte: Not really what? I'm not sure how your point is relevant to my post. Perhaps you clicked on the wrong name?

        • @bazzaa:

          Yes I did click the wrong reply. Sorry about that

          Supposed to be for @SamR

          @4agte: I hate it when that happens…

          @4agte:
          Yeah but a media server is not a HTPC so your comment was not relevant to what I was saying either.

          Even so, Greens are not designed for servers too.

          Yes you can use the WDIDLE program but that is a bit of a pain in the butt, you have to run a DOS boot CD with it as the only hard drive (preferably) and the controller set up in EIDE mode which is beyond most users.

        • @SamR:

          My server is used mostly used to store media files and then watch them on my HTPC around the house. Regardless if the green is in the server or the HTPC when the files accessed they are then watched. The green won't park until I finish watching the media file.

          I do though prefer the reds because of the greens parking. I only have greens because reds didn't exist when I first build the unraid server and had spare greens on hand. As I now keep a lot of files on the server, I now only buy reds

          I guess I have only thought about how I use my HTPCs. I just basically use it for Kodi watching the files on my server. For a lot of other tasks the reds certainly would be a much better drive.

      Reds aren't supposed to be high performance, if you look up benchmarks the 5400RPM reds are almost always among the quietest 3.5"s.

      • That is correct. The WD Reds are meant for NAS use as they're built for an "always on" environment with low power use and quiet operation.

  • I think Reds are better for NAS as they're always on?

    Need to replace my iMac 27" 2010 1TB hardrive, anyone know if this is compatible?

    • +2

      They use a 2.5" drive not a 3.5"

      • bugger :( thanks!

  • Poor density :(

    • Single 1TB platter. Should make for an exceedingly quiet, low-vibration drive.

  • 1TB HTPC!? o.o

      for those with Netflix ;)

      • Exactly this! Netflix is great but when you need to watch GoT the minute it came out either you download it from a well known swashbuckling site or get Foxtel.

  • can this be used as a normal HDD for the desktop, or only specifically for NAS

    • Yes. Its perfectly fine for a desktop.

  • Why would a 1TB be good for a HTPC? Either you're storing your media locally and you'll need much more than a single TB, or you're using it to access content via network (e.g. Plex, Netflix) in which case you'd be much better served by a lower capacity, silent SSD.

  • I am replacing my current HP bundled seagate 250gb to this WD red 1tb, as a main OS drive.

  • Any purples on sale. 4tb.

    How is this a deal, a 1TB Nas drive basically good for nothing. 3TB/4TB WD red drives have been around $52-$55 per TB recently from shopping express sale/ebay sales.

    • +5

      It's a deal because this particular drive can't be found cheaper anywhere else at the moment (see Staticice for current prices).

      Like you pointed out, it might not be the best value though.

    Any good 2tb cheap HDD's for a NAS? One of mine is gone so I need to rebuild the mirror but low on cash!

    Price on Amazon:
    1TB: $69 => $69 / TB
    2TB: $90 => $45 / TB
    3TB: $109 => $37 / TB

    The price by TB for the 1TB is especially high, so yes the price on ShoppingExpress is good compared to Amazon, but the model is relatively very expensive for its capacity compared to the other models.
