  • phone the tax office and talk to them

  • Yes I did call and they suggested get the forms completed online and making and appointment to lodge them at a post office only problem is the closest post office for me that has this service is 30+ mins and they are completely booked out for the next two weeks. So I tried the next closest one after that (45mins) and it was also booked for a similar time. so thought I would ask here :-)

    • Have you tried a walk in for the TFN service at the post office? I recently did a walk in, took no more than 20 mins. May be worth a try.

Have you tried his highschool ? My son was able to quickly get his done through the careers advisor and they were able to provide all the proof etc…

That used to be possible - we had forms we could counter-sign and submit to the ATO. However, now they require all applications to be completed online/in conjunction with the Post Office, and it is the responsibility of the student and their family to ensure they have the required number of points for proof.

My son is homeschooled and was offered a job a couple of weeks ago, he has started and we have just received his birth certificate as we could not find the original one so now we are moving on to getting his TFN so as the nearest post office to lodge an application is 30 mins away, I am a bit hesitate to drive with the hope that they will just do it there and then.

    • Can the employer lodge the forms on your behalf?

If do don't get one they'll just withhold the tax. Don't stress if you can't get one straight away.

  • I did mine via a local Centrelink office as they need to site ID etc. The forms were there as well and they set up an appointment. My TFN was compromised so had to go through this process a few years ago for a new one.

What does a man have to do to pay tax around here? ;)

You shouldn't have to worry about that… just have your Cayman Islands people
forward what they think is a fair amount…

    • The TFN is so that the OP's son can pay less tax. With no TFN, you still pay tax, but at the highest rate.

Technically it's not tax yet, it's just PAYG withholding.

At the end of the financial year after the tax return form is submitted, the amount of tax paid will be exactly the same, the refund would just be different.

OP maybe don't worry about it if it's too much hassle to get it done ASAP, it just means the ATO is safekeeping $100 or so until he does his tax return next July.

Some people elect to have more tax withheld as a saving mechanism.

  • edit: never mind

As others have said, it's enough that your son has applied for the TFN, and can let the employer know when it arrives. He has till next June before it starts getting urgent :-)
